WORD PROCESSING ABILITIES IN SUBJECTS AFTER STROKE OR TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY.

Acquired language disorder is a common consequence of stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Following the logogen model, this study investigated word processing abilities of post-stroke and post-TBI patients. Within- and between-group differences in word comprehension, naming, and reading were observed, as well as predominant errors in performance. Twenty-two post-stroke and 22 post-TBI patients were tested using tasks from the Comprehensive Aphasia Test-HR (CAT-HR). Post-TBI patients outperformed post-stroke patients in naming and reading. Both groups exhibited neologisms, phonological, se

Multi-level response coding in stimulus-response bindings: Irrelevant distractors retrieve both semantic and motor response codes.

Stimulus-response (S-R) episodes are formed whenever a response is executed in close temporal proximity to a stimulus. Subsequent stimulus repetition will retrieve the episode from memory, reactivating the previous response. Whereas many research findings attest to the flexibility of representing stimulus features, only little is known about the way responses are coded within transient S-R episodes, that is, whether the retrieved response is represented in terms of specific motor codes, abstract/semantic codes, or both. To differentiate between these accounts, we used an approach/avoidance tas

Phonological and semantic skills predict past tense verb inflection ability in perisylvian aphasia.

BACKGROUND: Although verb inflection is often impaired in post-stroke aphasia, the contribution of underlying cognitive/linguistic skills to correctly inflect different types of verbs is not well understood. AIMS: This study examined the degree to which empirically derived factors that reflect core language skills predict generation of past tense for regular (e.g., slapped), weak-irregular (e.g., slept) and strong-irregular (sang) verbs, and explored the neural substrates that support these skills. METHODS & PROCEDURE: Fourteen individuals with chronic post-stroke aphasia completed comprehen

The human hippocampus can pattern separate memories by meaning.

Hippocampal pattern separation is a neural operation supporting mnemonic discrimination of highly similar memories by orthogonalizing neural inputs into nonoverlapping representations. In humans, pattern separation is thought to support the specificity of episodic memories. Recent neuroimaging studies suggest that the hippocampus can also access and manipulate semantic information. However, it is unclear whether the hippocampus can pattern separate highly similar semantic representations. Here, we tested multiple neural and behavioral signatures of pattern separation using high-resolution func

General and specific contributions of the medial prefrontal cortex to knowledge about mental states.

Recent neuroimaging research (Mitchell, J.P., Heatherton, T.F., Macrae, C.N., 2002. Distinct neural systems subserve person and object knowledge. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 99, 15238-15243.) has suggested that semantic knowledge about the psychological aspects of other people draws on a pattern of neural activity that differentiates social from nonsocial semantics. Although the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) clearly plays a central role in a range of such social-cognitive tasks, little is known about the precise contributions made by this region to social semantics. The current study add

Comparing the value of dynamic versus static image-based tests of emotion recognition in neurodegenerative disease.

More precise subtyping within dementia syndromes leads to better prediction of pathology, supporting individualized, disease-specific treatments, and measuring emotion recognition abilities is particularly important for disorders like semantic behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (sbvFTD). To evaluate current tools' effectiveness, we compared two dynamic video-based affect labelling tests-the Dynamic Affect Recognition Test (DART), The Awareness of Social Inference Test-Emotion Evaluation Test (TASIT-EET)-and a static image-based Comprehensive Affect Testing System-Name Affect (CATS-NA)

Differing neuropsychological and neuroanatomical correlates of abnormal reading in early-stage semantic dementia and dementia of the Alzheimer type.

Individuals with semantic dementia (SD) were differentiated neuropsychologically from individuals with dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT) at very mild-to-mild stages (clinical dementia rating 0.5 or 1). A picture naming and recognition memory experiment provided a particularly useful probe for early identification, with SD individuals showing preserved picture recognition memory and impaired naming, and DAT individuals tending to show the reverse dissociation. The identification of an early SD group provided the opportunity to inform models of reading by exploring the influence of isolated l

Category specific deficits in Alzheimer's disease: fact or artefact?

Impairments in semantic memory commonly occur in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) but do these occur along category-specific lines? We administered a confrontation naming task comprising living and nonliving items to 68 individuals with AD and 59 age-matched control participants, in a study designed to address some of the methodological issues affecting investigation of category effects. In Experiment 1, stimuli were matched for familiarity and word frequency and also visual complexity, and the AD group showed a differential deficit in nonliving things. In Experiment 2, however, living and nonliving s

Irony is more cognitively taxing than literalness in the second language and more effective in the first: Evidence from event-related potentials.

Irony tends to be processed with greater cognitive effort than literalness. It remains unclear, however, whether bilinguals process irony differently in the native (L1) and second (L2) language. Here, we investigated the neurophysiological correlates of irony comprehension in highly proficient late Polish-English bilinguals reading praise and criticism that were either literal or ironic in both languages. We found an interaction between ironicity and language on the N400, an index of semantic integration effort and processing depth, with ironic statements eliciting greater amplitudes than lite

ORBIT: Annotation-Aware Empirical Enrichment and Semantic Reranking for Interpretable Functional-Class Recovery.

Gene-set interpretation workflows are widely used to summarize transcriptomic and proteomic experiments, yet standard enrichment tools often return long, redundant result tables that require substantial manual consolidation. We developed ORBIT (Ontology-Ranked Biological Interpretation Tool), an annotation-aware interpretation workflow that combines empirical enrichment, semantic reranking, and redundancy-aware representative-term selection to prioritize interpretable functional summaries from gene sets. We evaluated ORBIT on a curated tiered benchmark of human functional-class gene sets spann

Dissecting the Interplay Between Time of Dementia and Cognitive Profiles in Lewy Body Dementias.

BACKGROUND: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD) are differentiated by the time of onset of cognitive and motor symptoms ('1-year rule'). We explored the neuropsychological continuum of DLB and PDD subjects with different timing of dementia onset. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to compare the neuropsychological profile of DLB and PDD patients with different timing of dementia onset. METHODS: Neuropsychological findings at the diagnosis of dementia of 66 PDD and 42 DLB patients were retrospectively compared. Patients with PDD were divided into three tertile subgroups

Elements of olfactory intelligence in Drosophila.

The ability to make the world of odorants intelligible is a key capability of the Drosophila olfactory system that we shall call olfactory intelligence. Characterizing the functional logic of the Drosophila early olfactory system that makes the natural world of odorants intelligible is a major challenge in neuroscience. Starting by modeling the space of odorants using constructs of both semantic and syntactic information, we establish that the Antenna Lobe and Mushroom Body Calyx first decompose the confounding representation of the Antenna into a concentration independent odorant semantics in

When knowledge interferes with perception: Neural mechanisms of the semantic amplification of visual false memory.

Visual false memory refers to our tendency to falsely recognize novel stimuli that are visually similar to seen stimuli. Visual false memory also occurs when stimuli are meaningful, suggesting that semantic information interferes with the encoding of visual details. However, the neural mechanisms of this semantic interference effect are largely unknown. In the present fMRI study, participants were scanned while encoding visually similar fonts presented with words (word-fonts) or pseudowords (pseudoword-fonts), and later, when recognizing old, new similar (lures), and new dissimilar (novel) fon

The role of semantic similarity in verb learning events: Vocabulary-related changes across early development.

Verb meaning is challenging for children to learn across varied events. This study examined how the taxonomic semantic similarity of the nouns in novel verb learning events in a progressive alignment learning condition differed from the taxonomic dissimilarity of nouns in a dissimilar learning condition in supporting near (similar) and far (dissimilar) verb generalization to novel objects in an eye-tracking task. A total of 48 children in two age groups (23 girls; younger: 21-24 months, Mage = 22.1 months; older: 27-30 months: Mage = 28.3 months) who differed in taxonomic vocabulary size were

[Colorectal cancer diagnosis method based on dynamic gland-aware and tissue soft-clustering].

In colorectal cancer histopathology, the collaborative perception of microscopic and salient lesions is critical for effective diagnosis and improved patient prognosis. However, existing deep learning methods struggle to simultaneously capture microscopic glandular disorganization and salient tissue lesions. To address this limitation, a colorectal cancer diagnosis network based on dynamic gland-aware and tissue soft-clustering (DGTSNet) is proposed. The method employs dynamic gland-aware convolution to explicitly perceive gland boundaries and dynamically adjust sampling offsets, while incorpo

Visuospatial Functioning in the Primary Progressive Aphasias.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify whether the three main primary progressive aphasia (PPA) variants would show differential profiles on measures of visuospatial cognition. We hypothesized that the logopenic variant would have the most difficulty across tasks requiring visuospatial and visual memory abilities. METHODS: PPA patients (n=156), diagnosed using current criteria, and controls were tested on a battery of tests tapping different aspects of visuospatial cognition. We compared the groups on an overall visuospatial factor; construction, immediate recall, delayed recall, a

[Internal picture of the disease in neurotic cardiophobias].

The authors investigated the characteristics of the patient's insight into the disease in 80 patients (45 males, 35 females, mean age, 32 years) with neuroses with the cardialgophobic syndrome. To exclude organic pathology, all patients were subjected to EEG and ECG; in 55 patients the central and peripheral hemodynamics were also studied. Psychological examination was carried out using the method of the semantic differential. The data obtained were processed by a correlational analysis. The authors have identified differences in the patient's insight into the disease in asthenic and hysterica

Brain network differences in second language learning depend on individual competencies.

Integrating new words into an existing semantic network is a core challenge of second language (L2) acquisition. We investigated how evidence-based learning strategies and individual performance relate to the neurocognitive dynamics of vocabulary learning. Eighty-three adults proficient in German or French learned 48 Finnish (L2) nouns over 14 days using a mobile app that systematically varied retrieval practice, corrective feedback, multisensory learning, and distributed learning. Before and after training, EEG was recorded during a translation recognition task designed to elicit the N400, an

Semantic and Phonological Brain Networks in Older Adults: A Systematic Scoping Review.

Background/Objectives: Despite many neurobiological models of semantics and phonology, there is no consensus regarding their functional organization. Specifically, there is considerable debate concerning the precise functional roles of the left inferior frontal gyrus and inferior parietal lobe, where these two networks may overlap. Meta-analyses addressing this topic have focused on neurologically intact young adults, yet theories of cognitive aging suggest older adults may exhibit a different distribution of their language networks. This scoping review specifically explores the interplay betw

New Yes/No Recognition Memory Analysis on the California Verbal Learning Test-3: Clinical Utility in Alzheimer's and Huntington's Disease.

OBJECTIVES: The third edition of the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT-3) includes a new index termed List A versus Novel/Unrelated recognition discriminability (RD) on the Yes/No Recognition trial. Whereas the Total RD index incorporates false positive (FP) errors associated with all distractors (including List B and semantically related items), the new List A versus Novel/Unrelated RD index incorporates only FP errors associated with novel, semantically unrelated distractors. Thus, in minimizing levels of source and semantic interference, the List A versus Novel/Unrelated RD index may yi
