Is sentence structure processed by the same neural and cognitive resources that are recruited for processing word meanings, or do structure and meaning rely on distinct resources? Linguistic theorizing and much behavioral evidence suggest tight integration between lexico-semantic and syntactic representations and processing. However, most current proposals of the neural architecture of language continue to postulate a distinction between the two. One of the earlier and most cited pieces of neuroimaging evidence in favor of this dissociation comes from a paper by Dapretto and Bookheimer (1999).

The aim of the current study was to examine brain activity of adult regular calculators while processing addition sums with different types of answers. The task was a verification task, the incorrect answers were divided into two types: one was comprised of three numbers that do not belong to any additive triplet (such as 2, 4, 7) and it was always near the correct result (± 1); the other was a number which is related to the two numbers which appear in the stimulus but belongs to an incorrect competing triplet of numbers and it was always in a greater distance from the correct answer. Differen

Lexical orthographic information provides the basis for recovering the meanings of words in reading and for generating correct word spellings in writing. Research has provided evidence that an area of the left ventral temporal cortex, a subregion of what is often referred to as the visual word form area (VWFA), plays a significant role specifically in lexical orthographic processing. The current investigation goes beyond this previous work by examining the neurotopography of the interface of lexical orthography with semantics. We apply a novel lesion mapping approach with three individuals wit

The present study examines whether large language model (LLM) embeddings can approximate the psychometric validation process of a newly developed psychological scale. Using the Academic Psychological Distress Scale (APDS) as a case study, we replicated the full validation pipeline, traditionally performed on human response data, by applying exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses (EFA and CFA) to semantic similarity matrices derived from LLM embeddings. We first computed cosine similarity among all 58 APDS items and found a moderately strong correspondence with the participants' correlati

INTRODUCTION: Breast ultrasound diagnosis is significantly constrained by operator subjectivity. While Deep Learning shows promise, existing models often neglect the structured morphological semantics essential for radiological reasoning.
METHODS: We propose Cross-Attention Guided Network (CGA-Net), a multi-modal framework that fuses visual data with objective clinical descriptors via a cross-attention mechanism. Specifically, clinical features-such as shape and margin-act as semantic queries to dynamically highlight pathological regions.
RESULTS: Validated on 252 patients using a rigorous O

BACKGROUND: The semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia (svPPA), a rare neurodegenerative disorder, leads to anomia due to a progressive loss of word meaning. In the absence of pharmacological treatment, speech therapy is preferred in clinical practice. However, semantic rehabilitation, which has shown beneficial effects in vascular aphasia when used in combination with metacognitive training, is poorly studied in degenerative pathologies and specifically in svPPA. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of semantic therapy combined with metacognitive training on naming performa

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been hypothesized to act by reducing the pathologically enhanced semantic, anxiety-related associations of patients with panic disorder. This study investigated the effects of CBT on the behavioral and neural correlates of the panic-related semantic network in patients with panic disorder.
METHODS: An automatic semantic priming paradigm specifically tailored for panic disorder, in which panic symptoms (e.g., "dizziness") were primed by panic triggers (e.g., "elevator") compared with neutral words (e.g., "bottle"), was performed during function

Research suggests that semantic memory deficits can occur in at least three ways. Patients can (1) show amodal degradation of concepts within the semantic store itself, such as in semantic dementia (SD), (2) have difficulty in controlling activation within the semantic system and accessing appropriate knowledge in line with current goals or context, as in semantic aphasia (SA) and (3) experience a semantic deficit in only one modality following degraded input from sensory cortex. Patients with SA show deficits of semantic control and access across word and picture tasks, consistent with the vi

Most current models of knowledge organization are based on hierarchical or taxonomic categories (animals, tools). Another important organizational pattern is thematic categorization, i.e. categories held together by external relations, a unifying scene or event (car and garage). The goal of this study was to compare the neural correlates of these categories under automatic processing conditions that minimize strategic influences. We used fMRI to examine neural correlates of semantic priming for category members with a short stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) of 200 ms as subjects performed a lexi

In this paper, we describe a patient (LI) suffering from semantic dementia who showed a category-specific naming impairment for living things over and above the effects of several nonsemantic confounding variables. We investigated the characteristics of LI's impairment to address the following three issues raised in three different accounts of category-specific impairments: (i) the role of an imbalance in the loss of sensory compared to nonsensory features (assumed by the Sensory Functional Theory [Warrington, E. K., & Shallice, T. (1984). Category-specific semantic impairments. Brain, 107, 82

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the behavioral characteristics of semantic dementia (SD) using an instrument originally developed for patients with autism spectrum disorder.
METHODS: The behavioral symptoms of 20 patients with SD and 20 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) in both the preclinical state and the dementia state were evaluated using the Pervasive Developmental Disorders Autism Society Japan Rating Scale (PARS).
RESULTS: The SD group showed high prevalence in four behaviors related to stereotypy and social impairment: eating very few food items, selfishness, difficulty in recognizing

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between language abilities and language lateralization in the developing brain is important for our understanding of the neural architecture of language development.
METHODS: We investigated 35 right-handed children and adolescents aged 7-16 years with a functional magnetic resonance imaging language paradigm and a comprehensive language and verbal memory examination.
RESULTS: We found that less lateralized language was significantly correlated with better language performance across areas of the brain and across different language tasks. Less lateralized langu

When viewing a complex scene, the visual system must decide where to look among many potential targets. How this selection process unfolds over time-and whether it reflects changing semantic priorities-remains poorly understood. We tracked eye movements of 100 participants viewing 100 real-world scenes and modeled four distinct semantic features at each location: similarity to the scene category, similarity to other objects, similarity to the most recently fixated object, and local semantic intensity. Complementary Bayesian models of fixation likelihood and fixation onset time revealed that ea

Advances in deepfake technology raise concerns about disinformation spread. Novel deepfake technologies make it increasingly difficult to distinguish between real and fake media content. The current study investigated how speakers' credibility, the participants' traits and attitudes may influence the brain processing of audio deepfakes arguing for and against COVID-19 vaccination. We analyzed the electroencephalograms (EEGs) of 61 participants who supported or opposed COVID-19 vaccination. The participants were exposed to audio deepfakes portraying two speakers-a prominent medical doctor (pro-

Large Language Models (LLMs) increasingly employ alignment techniques to prevent harmful outputs. Despite these safeguards, attackers can circumvent them by crafting adversarial prompts. Predominant token-level optimization methods primarily rely on optimizing for exact affirmative templates (e.g., "Sure, here is..."). However, these paradigms frequently encounter bottlenecks such as suboptimal convergence, compromised prompt naturalness, and poor cross-model generalization. To address these limitations, we propose Semantic Representation Attack (SRA), a novel LLM-agnostic paradigm that fundam

People with semantic dementia (SD) or semantic variant primary progressive aphasia typically present with marked atrophy of the anterior temporal lobe, and thereafter progress more slowly than other forms of frontotemporal dementia. This suggests a prolonged prodromal phase with accumulation of neuropathology and minimal symptoms, about which little is known. To study early and presymptomatic SD, we first examine a well-characterized cohort of people with SD recruited from the Cambridge Centre for Frontotemporal Dementia. Five people with early SD had coincidental MRI prior to the onset of sym
