Superior semicircular canal (SSC) dehiscence syndrome, also known as Minor syndrome, is a rare condition characterized by vestibular and cochlear symptoms linked to a defect in the bony roof of the SSC. The prevalence is estimated at 0.5%, with a male predominance. Dehiscence may result from abnormal bone development, becoming symptomatic due to minimal trauma or pressure changes. Clinical presentation varies based on dehiscence size and location, with dizziness and oscillatory movements triggered by pressure changes or loud sounds being common symptoms. Other manifestations include conductive

Little is known about the role of TBX1 in post-otocyst stages of inner ear development. Here, we report on mice with a missense mutation of Tbx1 that are viable with fully developed but abnormally formed inner ears. Mutant mice are deaf due to an undeveloped stria vascularis and show vestibular dysfunction associated with abnormal semicircular canal formation. We show that TBX1 is expressed in endolymph-producing strial marginal cells and vestibular dark cells of the inner ear and is an upstream regulator of Esrrb, which previously was shown to control the developmental fate of these cells. We

CONCLUSION: Patients with posterior semicircular canal dehiscence (PSCD) have low frequency conductive hearing loss similar to patients with superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) secondary to a pathologic third window.
OBJECTIVES: PSCD can result in conductive hearing loss, but the magnitude of this hearing loss remains to be quantified. Patients with SSCD have been shown to have low frequency conductive hearing loss. The underlying pathophysiology of hearing loss from PSCD and SSCD is similar and related to a pathologic third window.
METHOD: A PubMed search was completed for a meta-

Importance. Superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SCD) is a third window lesion of the inner ear causing symptoms of vertigo, autophony, tinnitus, and hearing loss. A "two-hit" hypothesis has traditionally been proposed, whereby thinly developed bone overlying the superior canal is disrupted by a sudden change in intracranial pressure. Although the symptoms of SCD may be precipitated by head injury, no previous reports have described a temporal bone fracture directly causing SCD. Observations. Two patients sustained temporal bone fractures after closed head trauma, and developed unilateral o

Introduction Superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is mainly characterized by vestibular symptoms induced by intense sound stimuli or pressure changes, which occur because of dehiscence of the bony layer covering the superior semicircular canal. Case Report Here, we report a case of the syndrome with pulsatile tinnitus and ear fullness, in the absence of vestibular symptoms. Discussion Signs and symptoms of the syndrome are rarely obvious, leading to the requirement for a minimum workup to rule out or make diagnosis more probable and thus avoid misconduct.

Today, modern tools in vestibular testing are feasible to provide information about functional status of all five peripheral vestibular receptors. Isolated or combined loss of crista and macula receptor function can be determined in the diagnostic process. We describe a seldom case of isolated functional loss of lateral semicircular canal receptor function in a 55-year-old patient. Whereas there was no ispilateral caloric response and video head impulse test revealed a catch-up saccade, air-conducted (AC) cervical and ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMP, oVEMP), subjective visu

Thinning or dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal may occur on the middle cranial fossa floor or adjacent to the superior petrosal sinus (SPS). However, no symptomatic cases of superior canal dehiscence by SPS have been previously described. A 45-year-old woman presented with left-side pulsating tinnitus, autophony and disequilibrium. Examination showed conductive hearing loss and decreased threshold of vestibular evoked myogenic potential in the left side. Sound and vibration stimuli and positive pressure insufflations into the left ear evoked mainly torsional nystagmus instead of ver

Superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is a clinical picture with sound and pressure-induced vertigo, autophony, hearing loss and a lowered bone conduction threshold. It is an important differential diagnosis to otosclerosis and patent eustachian tube. Diagnostic investigations include audiometric testing, nystagmus provocation, computed tomography and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials. Surgical repair of the dehiscence represents a curative therapeutic option. We describe the disease symptoms on the basis of a typical case.

UNLABELLED: The syndrome of dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal (DCSS) is primarily associated with vertigo and/or hearing loss. The dehiscence may be completely asymptomatic and represent an incidental finding on radiological investigation.
OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate the advantages of a volume rendered CT study of the petrous temporal bone of patients with hearing loss, and to demonstrate the effectiveness of its systematic application in the protocols of examination. To propose a radiological classification of DCSS with a therapeutic application.

A puzzling aspect of middle ear surgery is the presence of an air-bone gap in a small number of cases with no apparent cause. We believe that some of these cases are due to unrecognized superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD). We have now gathered experience from 20 patients with SSCD presenting with apparent conductive hearing loss without vestibular symptoms. All affected ears had SSCD on high-resolution CT scan. The common findings in these patients were: (1) the air-bone gaps occurred in the lower frequencies below 2,000 Hz, and ranged from 10 to 60 dB; (2) bone conduction thresholds

OBJECTIVES: To emphasize the role of computerized tomography (CT) in the etiologic work-up of stapes surgery failure.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Helical high resolution CT scan of the temporal bone with axial and coronal views and multiplanar reconstructions was performed in a patient who had undergone unsuccessful stapedectomy.
RESULTS: CT scan demonstrated a well located prosthesis, the absence of the radiological hallmarks of otosclerosis, and revealed a superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD). The diagnosis of SSCD was retrospectively considered accountable for the preoperative clinical

According to the canalolithiasis theory, benign paroxysmal vertigo (BPPV) is caused by gravity-dependent movements of otoconial debris that collects in the endolymph of the posterior semicircular canal. Other parts of the vestibular organ are rarely affected, and it is mainly the horizontal canal that is affected by this atypical form of BPPV. Canalolithiasis of the superior semicircular canal must be considered an anomaly because the superior semicircular canal is the highest point of the vestibular organ and debris normally cannot collect in this special location. Until now, BPPV of the supe

Recently Minor and co-workers described patients with sound- and pressure-induced vertigo due to dehiscence of the superior semicircular canal. Identifying patients with this 'new' vestibular entity is important, not only because the symptoms are sometimes very incapacitating, but also because they can be treated. We present symptoms and findings in eight such patients, all of whom reported pressure-induced vertigo that increased during periods of upper respiratory infections. Pulse-synchronous tinnitus and gaze instability during head movements were also common complaints. All patients latera
