Is timing everything? Age-related differences in the use of temporal agency cues.

Sense of agency (SoA) is the subjective experience of controlling one's own actions and their effects. To infer SoA people rely, among other cues, on temporal cues such as temporal contiguity (i.e. the closeness in time between action and effect) and temporal expectation (i.e. the match between expected and actual timing of an effect). We investigated whether the use of temporal cues and their interplay differ between younger (18-28 years) and older (65-75 years) adults. In the experiment, participants first completed adaptation blocks to form expectations regarding the timing of an effect. In

Adaptive voice interaction as a cognitive regulation mechanism during second-language listening: The roles of learner agency and listening anxiety.

The increasing integration of artificial intelligence into learning environments has created new opportunities to examine how adaptive technologies influence fundamental psychological processes underlying language learning. This Study investigated whether learner-controlled voice interaction functions as a cognitive regulation mechanism that enhances second-language (L2) listening performance while reducing listening anxiety through greater learner agency and more efficient cognitive processing. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was employed with 57 Chinese university students lear

Negotiating the borderlands of agency: A narrative inquiry into voice and resilience among IPV survivors in Saskatchewan.

BackgroundIntimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive public health and human rights issue, yet survivors' agency is often framed narrowly within linear victim-survivor narratives that overlook how intersecting identities and structural constraints shape their options and responses. Objectives: To explore how women who have experienced IPV negotiate agency and reclaim voice within intersecting social, cultural, and personal borderlands of experience.DesignQualitative narrative inquiry informed by intersectionality and borderlands theory.MethodsTwo women living in a Canadian city, who self -

Local resource mobilization for malaria vector control among Rwandan rice farmers: a pilot study into the role of community ownership.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests a vicious cycle between rice cultivation and malaria control in Rwanda. Rice fields offer an attractive breeding ground for malaria vectors, which increases the disease burden in rice farming communities, and, consequently, reduces productivity in the rice sector. Community-based larval source management in rice fields is propagated as a sustainable solution to break this cycle. A sense of agency and ownership of malaria control interventions, as well as the mobilization of resources at the local level, are often considered preconditions for success. However, an e

Hypnosis, Free Will, and Consciousness.

Hypnosis has sometimes been described as an "altered state of consciousness," but what is "unaltered" consciousness? We approach the issue by first exploring the sense of free will, because it can be lost during hypnosis. However, the argument is developed that free will is an illusion, so should not be present in the waking state. Thus, in a sense, hypnosis is a more accurate state of consciousness. The sense of free will is shown to result from an experience of agency, which is often missing in hypnosis. We consider how hypnotic, illusory perceptions are developed, and plausible processes ar

Antipsychotics and Identity: The Adverse Effect No One is Talking About.

People who take antipsychotics, and people who are prescribed antipsychotics without taking them, experience effects which are not frequently discussed: effects on their identity and sense of self. Qualitative research indicates the relationship between taking APs and identity is multilayered, and changeable. Taking APs can restore people to their earlier, pre-symptom sense of self. Being prescribed and taking APs can also, on the other hand, be experienced as damaging, erasing and dulling people's sense of who they are. This complexity deserves exploration in clinical practice, which we belie

Enhancing Agency in Individuals with Depressive Symptoms: The Roles of Effort, Outcome Valence, and Its Underlying Cognitive Mechanisms and Neural Basis.

BACKGROUND: Agency, a sense of control over one's actions and outcomes, is crucial for recovery from depressive symptoms. However, the mechanisms that enhance agency in individuals with depressive symptoms remain poorly understood. This study endeavors to elucidate these fundamental processes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We recruited 52 participants exhibiting depressive symptoms to participate in a novel Judgment of Agency (JoA) task. This task was structured with a 3 (effort: high load, medium load, low load) × 2 (outcome: win, miss) within-subject design to assess the impact of effort and outco

Neural Correlates of Self-other Distinction in Patients with Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders: The Roles of Agency and Hand Identity.

Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) are characterized by disturbed self-other distinction. While previous studies associate abnormalities in the sense of agency (ie, the feeling that an action and the resulting sensory consequences are produced by oneself) with disturbed processing in the angular gyrus, passive movement conditions to isolate contributions of motor predictions are lacking. Furthermore, the role of body identity (ie, visual features determining whether a seen body part belongs to oneself) in self-other distinction is unclear. In the current study, fMRI was used to assess the

Attribution of sensory prediction error to perception of muscle fatigue.

Sensory prediction-error is vital to discriminating whether sensory inputs are caused externally or are the consequence of self-action, thereby contributing to a stable perception of the external world and building sense of agency. However, it remains unexplored whether prediction error of self-action is also used to estimate the internal body condition. To address this point, we examined whether prediction error affects the perceived intensity of muscle fatigue. Participants evaluated fatigue while maintaining repetitive finger movements. To provide prediction error, we inserted a temporal de

Beyond vulnerability: reflective selfhood, rural woman identity reinterpretation, and agency under structural constraint.

Personality, social, and narrative psychology increasingly call for context-sensitive approaches to understanding how selfhood and agency are organized under structurally unequal conditions. This three-wave field survey examined prospective associations among adversity experiences, reflective selfhood, rural woman identity reinterpretation, family decision-making power, psychological resilience, and agency among rural women in China. Reflective selfhood and rural woman identity reinterpretation were conceptualized as preliminary, narrative-informed, context-sensitive operationalizations of the

Body ownership causes illusory self-attribution of speaking and influences subsequent real speaking.

When we carry out an act, we typically attribute the action to ourselves, the sense of agency. Explanations for agency include conscious prior intention to act, followed by observation of the sensory consequences; brain activity that involves the feed-forward prediction of the consequences combined with rapid inverse motor prediction to fine-tune the action in real time; priming where there is, e.g., a prior command to perform the act; a cause (the intention to act) preceding the effect (the results of the action); and common-sense rules of attribution of physical causality satisfied. We descr

Who Has Done It? Exploring Gaze Agency in Obsessive-Compulsive Checkers.

The sense of agency (SoA) is a multifaceted construct, which can be defined as the ability to understand the causal relationships between our actions and sensory events. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) patients with checking compulsions often report a "lack of action completion" sensations, which has been conceptualized in the so-called "Not Just Right Experiences" construct. An intriguing explanation of this phenomenon comes from Belayachi and Van der Linden (2009, 2010), who suggest that OCD-checking patients are more prone to specify their action in a relatively molecular and inflexible

Pilot study of the relation between various dynamics of avatar experience and perceptual characteristics.

In recent years, due to the prevalence of virtual reality (VR) and human-computer interaction (HCI) research, along with the expectation that understanding the process of establishing sense of ownership, sense of agency, and limb heaviness (in this study, limb heaviness is replaced with comfort level) will contribute to the development of various medical rehabilitation, various studies have been actively conducted in these fields. Previous studies have indicated that each perceptual characteristics decrease in response to positive delay. However, it is still unclear how each perceptual charact

Spanish Adaptation of the Sense of Control Scale.

People have the basic need to experiment control over the most important aspects of their environment. Even though the Sense of Control Scale is one of the most used instruments to measure sense of control, its psychometric properties have not been thoroughly assessed in a Spanish-speaking context. This preregistered study adapts the Sense of Control Scale into Spanish. To achieve this, 605 adults (Mage = 33.09, SD = 14.18) filled out an online questionnaire containing the relevant measurements. Evidence of the structure of two first-order dimensions and a second-order dimension was obtained (

From autonomy to agency: How Scaffolded Choice and communication modality shape collaborative video learning.

Partner choice is frequently used to support learner autonomy in camera-on synchronous collaborative video learning, yet its contribution to learning outcomes remains unclear. This study examined how partner selection method and communication modality shape collaborative video learning among 136 university students. A 2 × 2 between-subjects experiment compared self-selected versus assigned partners and voice-based versus text-based communication. Retention and transfer tests, self-report measures, and interaction-behaviour analyses revealed a divergence between learners' subjective experiences

Measuring the Intensity of Stress Experienced and Its Impact on Life in Patients with Diagnosed Alcohol Use Disorder.

Alcohol addiction is characterized by extensive alcohol consumption that dominates other behaviours previously important to a patient. According to data from The State Agency for Prevention of Alcohol-Related Problems, up to 900,000 people in Poland are addicted to alcohol. On average, approximately 9.7 L of pure alcohol per capita was consumed in 2021. Alcohol addiction may cause severe health problems and is one the key risk factors for various diseases. Stress plays an important role in the process of alcohol addiction and is also a predictor for lower enjoyment in life. On the other hand,

Navigating life after diagnosis: Insights from people with early-stage dementia.

Receiving an Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis is widely understood as a life-changing event, that is, one that challenges not only memory and cognition but one's sense of identity and agency. By centering the voices of those affected and aligning findings with socioemotional selectivity and continuity theories, the study by Gamm et al. offers valuable insights into individualized care strategies and the importance of emotional resilience and identity preservation in early-stage AD. This commentary situates the study within the broader landscape of dementia care, highlighting its clinical imp

Agency-preserving robotic assistance for grasp slip recovery in body-powered prostheses.

Existing studies demonstrate that performance in reaction-based tasks can be improved using external robotic assistance without reducing the user's sense of agency, particularly when assistance is delivered near the user's natural reaction time. This finding has promise for assistive technologies like upper limb prostheses, where agency contributes to long-term use and users' natural slip reflexes are hindered by reduced feedback and proprioception. However, prior studies lack the physical feedback of device movement inherent to many assistive devices like body-powered prostheses or exoskeleto

The bodily self from psychosis to psychedelics.

The sense of self is a foundational element of neurotypical human consciousness. We normally experience the world as embodied agents, with the unified sensation of our selfhood being nested in our body. Critically, the sense of self can be altered in psychiatric conditions such as psychosis and altered states of consciousness induced by psychedelic compounds. The similarity of phenomenological effects across psychosis and psychedelic experiences has given rise to the "psychotomimetic" theory suggesting that psychedelics simulate psychosis-like states. Moreover, psychedelic-induced changes in t
