Mouthparts and their setae of the intertidal isopod Cirolana harfordi.

The cirolanid isopod Cirolana harfordi is described as a scavenger and a predator that lives in the intertidal region. In order to understand the microanatomy of the mouthparts and the setae that allow this animal to handle and eat its food, a scanning electron microscopy study was conducted. C. harfordi displays a variety in the types of setae distributed on its mouthparts in a site-specific fashion, including complex setae placed on the medial edge of the maxilliped and maxilla. Terminal pores in some setae were found to contain a cupule, which is a hemispherical structure, housed in the con

Reproductive morphology of three species of neotropical harvestmen (Opiliones, Laniatores, Gonyleptoidea).

Illustrations of penis morphology are essential components of species descriptions for harvestmen belonging to the suborder Laniatores. Male genitalia are important sources of taxonomic characters and are generally assumed to exhibit relatively little intraspecific variation. In contrast, descriptions of female reproductive morphology are rarely included in taxonomic descriptions of laniatorean harvestmen. As a result, relatively little is known about variation in the external features of the ovipositor. In this study, we used scanning electron microscopy to examine variation in male and femal

Malaria infection does not affect the sensitivity of peripheral receptor neurons in Anopheles stephensi.

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes transmit many important diseases including malaria, dengue and yellow fever. Disease transmission from one vertebrate host to another depends on repeated blood feedings by single mosquitoes. In order for the mosquito to acquire the blood that it needs to complete oogenesis, the insect must locate a suitable host. Olfactory cues (including carbon dioxide) released by the host and detected by the mosquito are the primary signals that vector insects use for host location. Previous studies have suggested that the physiological status - including bacterial, fungal, viral and

Scanning electron microscopy studies of the caudal appendix of Stenalpheops anacanthus (Decapoda: Pleocyemata: Alpheidae).

Stenalpheops anacanthus Miya, 1997 is a commensal alpheid shrimp that inhabits burrows shared with other crustaceans and possesses a distinctive caudal appendix. In this study, scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the morphology of this structure and its associated surface structures. The caudal appendix is narrow and lamellar, gradually tapering from base to tip and exhibiting incomplete longitudinal curling. Apparent segmentation results from periodic constrictions along the lateral margins. The surface features numerous circular pores and two types of projections-simple and coni

The 40-Year Mystery of Insect Odorant-Binding Proteins.

The survival of insects depends on their ability to detect molecules present in their environment. Odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) form a family of proteins involved in chemoreception. While OBPs were initially found in olfactory appendages, recently these proteins were discovered in other chemosensory and non-chemosensory organs. OBPs can bind, solubilize and transport hydrophobic stimuli to chemoreceptors across the aqueous sensilla lymph. In addition to this broadly accepted "transporter role", OBPs can also buffer sudden changes in odorant levels and are involved in hygro-reception. The ph

Responses of antennal olfactory receptors in the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti to human body odours.

Recent behavioural studies have demonstrated that human body odours which female Aedes aegypti find attractive exert their effects as complex mixtures of synergistically acting components. We have attempted to clarify the sensory mechanisms underlying the perception of these complex host odours by studying the responses of sensory cells underneath the A3-type sensilla of the mosquito antenna to both a human skin wash extract and the extract's active chromatographic fractions. The reaction patterns show that the host stimuli elicit responses from several types of receptor cells in a typical acr

Cephalic sensory pathways in the central nervous system of larval Manduca sexta (Lepidoptera : Sphingidae).

Central projections of neurons innervating sensory structures on the head of larval Manduca sexta were traced by using methods of anterograde cobalt-diffusion. Regions of the deutocerebrum and tritocerebrum in the brain receive input from the antenna, labrum, maxilla, labial palps, hypopharynx and other unidentified regions of the buccal cavity. Antennal, maxillary and labial inputs project to the larval antennal centre (LAC) of the deutocerebrum. Stemmatal neurons and a few antennal neurons project into the protocerebrum. The suboesophageal ganglion (SEG) receives input from mechanosensory ne

The aesthetasc concept: structural variations of putative olfactory receptor cell complexes in Crustacea.

The structure of the aesthetascs has been investigated in the prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (larvae and juveniles), the opossum shrimp Neomysis integer, the euphausid Meganyctiphanes, and in the water-fleas Daphnia magna and D. longispina. The aesthetascs, that are thought to represent olfactory receptors, exhibit a considerable structural variation, ranging from the well known aesthetascs of higher crustaceans (lobster, crab, crayfish) to the corresponding sensilla found in the water-fleas and the males of opossum shrimps. The two following morphological characteristics of the aesthetascs a

Olfaction in the female sheep botfly.

The nasal botfly Oestrus ovis (Diptera, Cyclorrhapha: Oestridae) is a myiasis-causing insect species, which affects the health of sheep, goats and humans. Gravid females are viviparous and larviposit into the animal's nostrils. Host-searching and larvipositing flies are visually guided and influenced by climatic conditions, whereas olfaction seemed to play no role in this process. However, here, we show that the antennae of adult O. ovis female flies are relatively small but well developed and inhabited by several types of olfactory sensilla. Further, we show that the antennal lobes of this sp

Knockout of OR39 reveals redundancy in the olfactory pathway regulating the acquisition of host seeking in Anopheles coluzzii.

The attraction of anthropophilic mosquitoes to human host cues, such as body odour and carbon dioxide, gradually increases during adult maturation. This acquisition of host-seeking behaviour correlates with age-dependent changes in odorant receptor (OR) transcript abundance and sensitivity of olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs). One OR gene of the human malaria vector, Anopheles coluzzii, AcolOR39, is significantly downregulated in mature females, and a cognate ligand of AcolOR39, sulcatone, a major component of human emanations, mediates the observed behavioural inhibition of newly emerged (tene

Dorsal setae in Raoiella (Acari: Tenuipalpidae): Their functional morphology and implication in fluid secretion.

The setae of mites are not regarded as secretory structures, yet in the flat mite genus Raoiella, each developmental stage presents droplets of fluid associated with the tips of their dorsal setae. To understand the origin of this fluid, the ultrastructure of the dorsal setae is investigated in females of Raoiella bauchani Beard & Ochoa and the invasive pest species Raoiella indica Hirst using scanning and transmission electron microscopy techniques. The dorsal setae are barbed along their entire length and have either a broadened plumose or a flat spatulate tip. Ultrastructurally, they presen

Infrared detection without specialized infrared receptors in the bloodsucking bug Rhodnius prolixus.

Bloodsucking bugs use infrared radiation (IR) for locating warm-blooded hosts and are able to differentiate between infrared and temperature (T) stimuli. This paper is concerned with the neuronal coding of IR in the bug Rhodnius prolixus. Data obtained are from the warm cells in the peg-in-pit sensilla (PSw cells) and in the tapered hairs (THw cells). Both warm cells responded to oscillating changes in air T and IR with oscillations in their discharge rates. The PSw cells produced stronger responses to T oscillations than the THw cells. Oscillations in IR did the reverse: they stimulated the l

Effect of genes, social experience, and their interaction on the courtship behaviour of transgenic Drosophila males.

Behaviour depends (a) on genes that specify the neural and non-neural elements involved in the perception of and responses to sensory stimuli and (b) on experience that can modulate the fine development of these elements. We exposed transgenic and control Drosophila melanogaster males, and their hybrids, to male siblings during adult development and measured the contribution of genes and of experience to their courtship behaviour. The transgene CheB42a specifically targets male gustatory sensillae and alters the perception of male inhibitory pheromones which leads to frequent male-male interac

A bioinspired dual-modal laser-induced graphene tactile sensor for high-precision multimodal object recognition.

Developing multifunctional tactile sensors that combine multimodal perception with structural simplicity remains challenging for embodied perception. Inspired by trichoid sensilla on wasp antennae, we present a dual-modal bioinspired trichoid tactile sensor (BTTS) that integrates both piezoresistive and triboelectric effects. The BTTS consists of vertically aligned rough-substrate laser-induced graphene fibers (RLIGFs) formed on a laser-pretreated polyimide substrate, creating a hierarchical bionic architecture with staggered microstructures. This design produces distinguishable electrical sig

Venom of the parasitoid wasp Pteromalus puparum contains an odorant binding protein.

Odorant binding proteins (OBPs) are crucial for insects to detect food, mates, predators, or other purposes. They are mostly located on antennae and other olfactory sensilla. In this study, we identified an OBP from the venom of Pteromalus puparum, designated as PpOBP. The cDNA of PpOBP is 517 bp in length, encoding 132 amino acids. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that PpOBP was clustered with OBP68 and OBP67 of Nasonia vitripennis. PpOBP was highly expressed in the venom apparatus at the transcriptional and translational levels. PpOBP was located in all parts of venom apparatus including venom
