The effect of ovariectomy on cardiac autonomic control in rats submitted to aerobic physical training.

We have investigated the ovariectomy effects on the cardiovascular autonomic adaptations induced by aerobic physical training and the role played by nitric oxide (NO). Female Wistar rats (n=70) were divided into five groups: Sedentary Sham (SS); Trained Sham (TS); Trained Hypertensive Sham treated with N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (THS); Trained Ovariectomized (TO); and Trained Hypertensive Ovariectomized treated with L-NAME (THO). Trained groups were submitted to a physical training during 10 weeks. The cardiovascular autonomic control was investigated in all groups using diffe

Physical training preserves bone mineral density in postmenopausal women with forearm fractures and low bone mineral density.

UNLABELLED: One hundred and twelve postmenopausal women with low bone mineral density (BMD) and forearm fractures were randomized to physical training or control group. After one year the total hip BMD was significantly higher in the women in the physical training group. The results indicate a positive effect of physical training on BMD in postmenopausal women with low BMD. INTRODUCTION: The fivefold increase in hip fracture incidence since 1950 in Sweden may partially be due to an increasingly sedentary lifestyle. Our hypothesis was that physical training can prevent bone loss in postmenopau

Detection of emergent large vessel occlusion stroke with CT angiography is high across all levels of radiology training and grayscale viewing methods.

OBJECTIVES: CT angiography (CTA) is essential in acute stroke to detect emergent large vessel occlusions (ELVO) and must be interpreted by radiologists with and without subspecialized training. Additionally, grayscale inversion has been suggested to improve diagnostic accuracy in other radiology applications. This study examines diagnostic performance in ELVO detection between neuroradiologists, non-neuroradiologists, and radiology residents using standard and grayscale inversion viewing methods. METHODS: A random, counterbalanced experimental design was used, where 18 radiologists with varyi

Training of verbal creativity modulates brain activity in regions associated with language- and memory-related demands.

This functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) study was designed to investigate changes in functional patterns of brain activity during creative ideation as a result of a computerized, 3-week verbal creativity training. The training was composed of various verbal divergent thinking exercises requiring participants to train approximately 20 min per day. Fifty-three participants were tested three times (psychometric tests and fMRI assessment) with an intertest-interval of 4 weeks each. Participants were randomly assigned to two different training groups, which received the training time-delayed: The

Association between quadriceps pain pressure threshold and willingness to complete a blood flow restriction training session.

BACKGROUND: Blood flow restriction (BFR) training is used to enhance muscle adaptations and performance. However, the limb occlusion pressure used in BFR can cause pain or discomfort, leading some individuals to discontinue the training. This study examined whether pain pressure threshold (PPT), demographics, training history, or self-perceived pain tolerance were associated with voluntary discontinuation of BFR training. METHODS: Thirty-seven participants provided informed consent. Researchers collected survey and PPT data from a novel quadriceps location, then conducted BFR training on the

Differential training sequence effect upon psychostimulant discrimination.

1. Previous studies indicate that rats trained to discriminate either cathinone or cathine from its vehicle have a diminished discriminative performance when tested 24 hours after a drug administration when compared to tests conducted after a vehicle administration. The phenomenon of rapid tolerance may occur to produce a lessened interceptive cue on the test day following administration of the drug. It would, therefore, be probable that when rats are trained with consecutive cathinone or cathine administrations they would perform less well than if they were trained with these drugs never give

Differential effects of high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS) on contrast sensitivity and visual acuity when combined with a short perceptual training in adults with amblyopia.

Amblyopia is a neuro-developmental disorder characterised by several functional impairments in spatial vision even with the best optical correction. There is evidence that extensive perceptual training can improve visual acuity (VA) and contrast sensitivity (CS) in adults with amblyopia. In the present study, we assessed the efficacy of a recently developed neuro-modulatory technique (i.e., high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation; hf-tRNS) combined with a short perceptual training in adults with amblyopia. One group of ten participants underwent a short (8 sessions) monocular trai

Aerobic exercise-induced inhibition of PKCα/CaV1.2 pathway enhances the vasodilation of mesenteric arteries in hypertension.

Regular exercise is regarded as a nonpharmacological therapy for controlling hypertension by improving the function of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). The underlying mechanism is unclear. L-type-voltage-dependent Ca2+ channel (CaV1.2) on the plasma membrane and PKCα of VSMCs are pivotal modulators of vascular tone. PKCα is hyperactivated and concentrated at the surface membrane during hypertension. This study investigated the effects of aerobic exercise on the PKCα and CaV1.2 in mesenteric arterial smooth muscle cells from spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). SHRs and Wistar-Kyoto (WK
