A deep learning approach for line-level Amharic Braille image recognition.

Braille, the most popular tactile-based writing system, uses patterns of raised dots arranged in cells to inscribe characters for visually impaired persons. Amharic is Ethiopia's official working language, spoken by more than 100 million people. To bridge the written communication gap between persons with and without eyesight, multiple Optical braille recognition systems for various language scripts have been developed utilizing both statistical and deep learning approaches. However, the need for half-character identification and character segmentation has complicated these systems, particular

Development of BrailleBunny: a device to enhance braille learning.

PURPOSE: Braille use has been linked to higher rates of employment, education, financial self-sufficiency, and self-esteem. One area of the world particularly impacted by braille illiteracy is the Philippines. In 2016, Digital Learning for Development and All Children Reading released a "Grand Challenge for Development" that challenged researchers to address the need for assistive technologies to help children with sensory disabilities learn to read in the Philippines. The purpose of this research was to identify technical specifications, and then co-design and test a device that could be used

Reversible pseudoathetosis and sensory ataxic gait caused by cervical spondylotic myelopathy.

Proprioceptive deafferentation of spinal cord origin can cause pseudoathetosis, sensory ataxic gait, or both. The co-existence of pseudoathetosis and sensory ataxic gait caused by a surgically treatable condition of the spinal cord has been rarely reported. An 80-year-old man with cervical spondylotic myelopathy presented with severe sensory ataxic gait which confined him to a wheelchair. He also had poor control of his hands due to the pseudoathetoid movements of the fingers, which prevented him from sustaining constant muscle contraction. He underwent C3-4 and C4-5 anterior discectomies and

Somatosensory evoked potentials. Diagnostic criteria and abnormalities in cerebral lesions.

In order to advance the practical application of measuring evoked cortical responses following electrical stimulation of the median nerve at the wrist (SEP) in clinical neurology, diagnostic criteria, consisting of the onset latency, peak latency and 2 indices of the first 3 negative components, and their left-and-right differences, were proposed and applied to 65 patients with cerebral lesions of various aetiologies. The criteria used were shown to be very useful in distinguishing between normal subjects and patients with cerebral lesions. The N1 and N2 components were related to the involvem

The Role of Inhibitory Interneurons in Circuit Assembly and Refinement Across Sensory Cortices.

Sensory information is transduced into electrical signals in the periphery by specialized sensory organs, which relay this information to the thalamus and subsequently to cortical primary sensory areas. In the cortex, microcircuits constituted by interconnected pyramidal cells and inhibitory interneurons, distributed throughout the cortical column, form the basic processing units of sensory information underlying sensation. In the mouse, these circuits mature shortly after birth. In the first postnatal week cortical activity is characterized by highly synchronized spontaneous activity. While b

Alterations in the hemodynamic response function in cognitively impaired HIV/AIDS subjects.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has revealed much about altered CNS function in HIV/AIDS. In this study, we compared the blood oxygen level dependent hemodynamic response function (BOLD HRF) signal in HIV/AIDS and control subjects as a necessary pre-condition for fMRI studies of higher level cognitive function. Using event-related fMRI, subjects performed a simple sensory-motor activity allowing the measurement of the BOLD HRF in the precentral gyrus. There were no significant differences in the HRF when viewed as a function of age, hemisphere, or HIV serostatus. However, signific

Pressure-Specifying Sensory Device: quantitative sensory measurement in the oral cavity and oropharynx of normal adults.

We conducted a study to quantitatively determine the pressure perception thresholds in the oral cavity and oropharynx of a normal population with the Pressure-Specifying Sensory Device (PSSD). The PSSD measured pressure perception thresholds for both static and moving one- and two-point discrimination modalities at a variety of sites in the oral cavity and oropharynx as well as in the forearm of 11 adults. We also evaluated the ability of the PSSD to enhance sensory discrimination in four of these subjects by the process of sensory re-education for 11 days over a 15-day period. We found that t

Complex auditory hallucinations associated with hearing impairment in elderly adults.

Auditory hallucinations are a common yet underexplored phenomenon in individuals with hearing impairment, particularly in the elderly. Oliver Sacks syndrome, often seen in patients with sensory deprivation, is typically characterized by musical hallucinations but can also present with nonmusical auditory experiences. This case series presents three elderly patients with hearing impairment who experienced a range of auditory hallucinations, including voices, instrumental music, and environmental sounds, all localized to the ear with greater hearing loss. Despite these auditory experiences, pati

Internal tobacco industry research on olfactory and trigeminal nerve response to nicotine and other smoke components.

Evidence has shown that factors other than the central pharmacological effects of nicotine are important in promoting smoking behavior. One such non-nicotine effect includes sensory stimulation, which may promote smoking by developing learned associations with nicotine's rewarding effects, or by constituting a rewarding experience independent of nicotine. The present study used internal tobacco industry documents to examine industry efforts to understand and manipulate stimulation of the sensory nerves by tobacco smoke, and the influence of sensory stimulation on smoker behavior. Research focu

[Electrosensitive diagnosis in neurology].

The electrosensitive examination consists of the determination of sensory nerve conduction velocity and the somatosensory cortical evoked potentials above the contralateral postcentralarea after segmental skin stimu-contralateral postcentral area after segmental skin stimulation. This method records the total sensory system. The results received from normal persons and patients demonstrate that this riskless method is suitable for localization of peripheral neurogenic cerebral and especially localized spinal diseases. With the aid of cauda equina neurography additionally a new possibility is i

Orthodromic sensory nerve conduction of the medial and lateral plantar nerves. A standardization.

A standardized method of obtaining orthodromic distal sensory latencies of the medial and lateral plantar nerves is presented. Forty-one normal volunteer subjects were tested. Stimulation is carried out on the plantar aspect of the base of each toe using ring electrodes. Surface recording electrodes are placed posterior to the medial malleolus over the tarsal tunnel at points measuring 14, 16, 18 and 20 centimeters from the dorsum of the base of the great toe. Sixty-four evoked responses were averaged utilizing an electronic averaging technique and temperature was maintained at 31 degrees cent

Diagnosis and Management of Orthopaedic Conditions Associated With Hereditary Sensory Autonomic Neuropathies.

Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies (HSANs) encompass a diverse group of inherited neuropathies characterized by notable sensory and autonomic involvement that affects musculoskeletal structures and systemic function. There are 8 recognized types of HSAN. The orthopaedic manifestations of HSAN are complex and diverse, including spinal deformity, Charcot arthropathy, osteomyelitis, fractures, osteonecrosis, osteoporosis, and skeletal deformities. The sensory neuropathy with involvement of small nerve fibers can lead to unnoticed burns, fractures, and joint trauma. Spinal involvement i

Approaches to Treat Sensorineural Hearing Loss by Hair-Cell Regeneration: The Current State of Therapeutic Developments and Their Potential Impact on Audiological Clinical Practice.

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is typically a permanent and often progressive condition that is commonly attributed to sensory cell loss. All vertebrates except mammals can regenerate lost sensory cells. Thus, SNHL is currently only treated with hearing aids or cochlear implants. There has been extensive research to understand how regeneration occurs in nonmammals, how hair cells form during development, and what limits regeneration in maturing mammals. These studies motivated efforts to identify therapeutic interventions to regenerate hair cells as a treatment for hearing loss, with a focu

Enablers and Barriers to Hearing aid Use in People Living With Dementia.

Hearing loss is highly prevalent in dementia; however, people with dementia are less likely to use hearing aids consistently than people with intact cognition are. This qualitative study is the first of its kind to explore factors that influence hearing aid use from the perspective of community-living people with mild to moderate dementia and their care partners. Eleven UK-based dyads from the European SENSE-Cog Randomized Controlled Trial of a sensory intervention for people with dementia completed semi-structured interviews based on the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF). Our findings sugge

Apparent auditory deprivation effects of late onset: the role of presentation level.

Silman and colleagues [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 76, 1347-1362 (1984)] have reported an apparent effect of late auditory deprivation; this presents as loss of discrimination over time in the unaided ear of individuals using a single hearing aid fitted in middle age. In a replication of the basic effect, the influence of presentation level was examined in 24 monaurally aided subjects. The effect was reversed at presentation levels below about 75 dB SPL. The ear that is normally aided performs better at high presentation levels, while, at lower presentation levels, the converse is true. Thus it appear
