Evidence for cephalic magnetic map receptors in sea turtles.

Although the ability to sense Earth's magnetic field is phylogenetically widespread, receptors for the magnetic sense have not been identified unequivocally in any animal. Because magnetic fields penetrate biological tissue, magnetoreceptors could hypothetically exist anywhere in the body. To investigate the location of magnetoreceptors in juvenile loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta), we attached a weak magnet, which generated a magnetic disturbance over a small localized area, to three anatomical regions (head, mid-body and posterior). We then observed responses of turtles to magnetic ma

Vagal neuroimmune circuits in inflammation and immunity.

The peripheral nervous system serves as a critical interface between the brain and the immune system, orchestrating bidirectional communication that maintains homeostasis and coordinates host defense responses. Peripheral neuroimmune crosstalk occurs through multiple anatomical pathways, including autonomic efferents, sympathetic circuits, and sensory afferents that detect tissue perturbation. Among these pathways, the vagus nerve has emerged as a prominent conduit for neuroimmune communication, integrating homeostatic and inflammatory cues to shape both local and systemic immune responses. The neuro-immune insights of itch: peripheral mechanisms and central glial contributions.

Itch is a common symptom of inflammatory, systemic, and neurological conditions and is often driven by persistent neuroinflammatory processes. This review explores the intricate mechanisms underlying itch, focusing on interactions among sensory neurons, immune mediators, and glial cells. Key peripheral pathways include activation of pruriceptors by histamine, interleukins, and chemokines, as well as inflammatory pathways dependent on Toll-like receptors (TLRs). These pathways promote the release of mediators such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C–C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2). In the spinal co

Embryonic Development of the Inner Ear of the Catshark Scyliorhinus canicula.

INTRODUCTION: The inner ear is a complex three-dimensional structure responsible for the detection of sound, balance, and acceleration. Detailed knowledge about the development of the inner ear of gnathostomes (jawed vertebrates) comes from studies in bony fishes and tetrapods, but comparable information about this process in chondrichthyans, the oldest gnathostome radiation, is lacking. This study describes for the first time the embryonic development of the inner ear and its innervation in the catshark Scyliorhinus canicula. METHODS: By using molecular markers of proliferating cells, migrat

Advances in Optical Tools to Study Taste Sensation.

Taste sensation is the process of converting chemical identities in food into a neural code of the brain. Taste information is initially formed in the taste buds on the tongue, travels through the afferent gustatory nerves to the sensory ganglion neurons, and finally reaches the multiple taste centers of the brain. In the taste field, optical tools to observe cellular-level functions play a pivotal role in understanding how taste information is processed along a pathway. In this review, we introduce recent advances in the optical tools used to study the taste transduction pathways.

Evidence of chitin in the ampullae of Lorenzini of chondrichthyan fishes.

We previously reported that the polysaccharide chitin, a key component of arthropod exoskeletons and fungal cell walls, is endogenously produced by fishes and amphibians in spite of the widely held view that it was not synthesized by vertebrates [1]. Genes encoding chitin synthase enzymes were found in the genomes of a number of fishes and amphibians and shown to be correspondingly expressed at the sites where chitin was localized [1,2]. In this report, we present evidence suggesting that chitin is prevalent within the specialized electrosensory organs of cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes).

Neuromodulation in Chemosensory Pathways.

Interactions with the environment depend not only on sensory perception of external stimuli but also on processes of neuromodulation regulated by the internal state of an organism. These processes allow regulation of stimulus detection to match the demands of an organism influenced by its general brain state (satiety, wakefulness/sleep state, attentiveness, arousal, learning etc.). The sense of smell is initiated by sensory neurons located in the nasal cavity that recognize environmental odorants and project axons into the olfactory bulb (OB), where they form synapses with several types of neu

[The work of I.I. Schmalhousen on comparative morphology of vertebrates: Significance for paleontological reconstructions (data on the seismo-sensory system of agnathans)].

The morphology and function of the seismo-sensory system of agnathans (Agnatha: Heterostraci) are analyzed. This system has been reconstructed in Cyathaspidiformes and Amphiaspidiformes. The seismo-sensory system of agnathans was compared with the lateral line system of fishes: the difference between these systems in the density of seismo-sensory lines and the contribution level of these systems to orientation in the water was detected. The possibility of reconstruction of the length and direction of heterostracans cranial nerves has been shown using the position ofseismo-sensory lines and dep

The regeneration of electroreceptors in Kryptopterus.

The regeneration of ampullary electroreceptors was studied in the living catfish, Kryptopterus, by differential interference contrast optics. Electroreceptors in this transparent catfish are found, among other places, along the proximal portion of each anal fin ray, while the distal portion does not contain electroreceptors. Upon interruption of the sensory innervation, the electroreceptors disappear but regenerate when the skin is reinnervated. In this study, we tested the role of the skin and nerve in receptor regeneration with the following two experiments. First, a plug of fin containing e

[The sensitive nerve endings of the clitoris of the sow (Sus scrofa domesticus)].

Neural receptors of the porcine clitoris were examined using light and electron microscopy. Perfusion with ink allowed study of the unique vascular arrangement associated with the genital corpuscles. Sensory nerve-endings were generally rounded and formed a morphologically and structurally characteristic unit. They were composed of a network of primarily non-myelinated nerve fibers and flat cells. Between these structures, isolated small blood vessels were embedded amongst collagen fibers and amorphous material. An external capsule of variable thickness always surrounded the structures. Structure and position of receptors within scales bordering the toes of gekkonids.

In gekkonids, the scales bordering the toes or the adjacent tissue possess suberpidermal and intraepithelial receptors in addition to setae-bearing organs. The position of subepidermal lamellated corpuscles seems to be correlated with the size of the species. The larger the adult animal the more frequently is this type of receptor found laterally in the toe. This can be explained in connection with the vibration-sensitive function of lamellated receptors. Intraepithelial axon terminals were found close to the setae-bearing sensilla in one species only. They are surrounded by numerous tonofibri

Nicotinic nociceptors on perivascular sensory nerve endings.

Intra-arterial injection of increasing doses of acetylcholine, nicotine, carbachol and pilocarpine into the pain reflex ear of the rabbit dose-dependently caused a reflex fall in mean arterial blood pressure. The order of potency of the algesic substances was: nicotine greater than acetylcholine much greater than carbachol much greater than pilocarpine, whereas the purely muscarinic agonist bethanechol was inactive up to 3 mg. Atropine at 1 microgram/ml did not influence the effect of acetylcholine. At 30 micrograms/ml it reduced the effect of acetylcholine but also that of bradykinin suggesti

Receptor cell regeneration and connectivity in olfaction and taste.

The capacity of adult mammalian gustatory and olfactory receptor cells to regenerate and make synaptic reconnections provides examples that may be useful in initiating replacement of other kinds of sensory receptor cells. The sensory code for taste quality may not be degraded by taste receptor cell turnover because axons probably recouple to the appropriate type of new receptor cell by axon-receptor cell affinity. Experiments on the development and regeneration of taste receptor cells suggest that they regenerate and turn over by recapitulating the late but not the early steps in taste bud dev

Pacific-Ciguatoxin-2 and Brevetoxin-1 Induce the Sensitization of Sensory Receptors Mediating Pain and Pruritus in Sensory Neurons.

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) and neurotoxic shellfish poisoning syndromes are induced by the consumption of seafood contaminated by ciguatoxins and brevetoxins. Both toxins cause sensory symptoms such as paresthesia, cold dysesthesia and painful disorders. An intense pruritus, which may become chronic, occurs also in CFP. No curative treatment is available and the pathophysiology is not fully elucidated. Here we conducted single-cell calcium video-imaging experiments in sensory neurons from newborn rats to study in vitro the ability of Pacific-ciguatoxin-2 (P-CTX-2) and brevetoxin-1 (PbTx-1)

Topological segregation of stress sensors along the gut crypt-villus axis.

The crypt-villus structure of the small intestine serves as an essential protective barrier. The integrity of this barrier is monitored by the complex sensory system of the gut, in which serotonergic enterochromaffin (EC) cells play an important part1,2. These rare sensory epithelial cells surveil the mucosal environment for luminal stimuli and transmit signals both within and outside the gut3-6. However, whether EC cells in crypts and villi detect different stimuli or produce distinct physiological responses is unknown. Here we address these questions by developing a reporter mouse model to q

Current understanding of trigeminal ganglion structure and function in headache.

INTRODUCTION: The trigeminal ganglion is unique among the somatosensory ganglia regarding its topography, structure, composition and possibly some functional properties of its cellular components. Being mainly responsible for the sensory innervation of the anterior regions of the head, it is a major target for headache research. One intriguing question is if the trigeminal ganglion is merely a transition site for sensory information from the periphery to the central nervous system, or if intracellular modulatory mechanisms and intercellular signaling are capable of controlling sensory informat
