INTRODUCTION: Suriname is a country on the northeastern Atlantic coast of South America. It is unique in the sense that different ethnic cultures live together within the country, resulting in high levels of transport of both humans and products between the Asian, African, and European continents as well as the Caribbean. Travel is only one of the many factors present in Suriname contributing to the risk for the emergence or introduction of any infectious disease. Recently, circulation of both chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and hantavirus was reported in areas neighboring Suriname. Here we report a

During 2002, several epidemics of aseptic meningitis were attributed to echovirus 13 in Korea. The causative agents of these outbreaks were isolated and identified using rhabdosarcoma cells, HEp-2 and Buffalo green monkey kidney cells, and a neutralization test using monospecific antiserum. Fifty-four echovirus 13 isolates were isolated from patients with aseptic meningitis in the provinces, Seoul, Kyonggi, Gwangju, Jeonju, Busan, and Ulsan. Symptoms associated with aseptic meningitis infection in patients included the occurrence of headaches and mild fever. Molecular characterization of echov

An investigation was conducted between 1994 and 1997 in forested areas of the Central African Republic (CAR) to determine the seroprevalence of IgG antibodies against several haemorrhagic fever viruses present in the region. Sera were obtained from 1762 individuals in two groups (Pygmy and Bantu locuted populations) living in 4 forested areas in the south of the country. Sera were tested for IgG antibodies against Ebola, Marburg, Rift Valley fever (RVF), Yellow fever (YF) and Hantaviruses by enzyme immunoassay (EIA), and against Lassa virus by immunofluorescent assay. The prevalence of IgG ant

Hantaviruses are RNA viruses that belong to the genus Hantavirus, family Bunyaviridae. The main reservoir of hantaviruses are rodents. Humans become infected by inhaling particles of dust contaminated with faeces of rodents, that are found In Europe and Asia hantaviruses named: Hantaan, Seoul and Dobrava-Belgrade causing haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) are prevalent. Typical clinical picture of HFRS consists of renal insufficiency (primarily anuria and then polyuria with disturbances of water and electrolytic balance), hypotension, shock and disseminated intravascular coagulation

Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) is the most frequently diagnosed zoonosis in Asia. This zoonotic infection is the result of exposure to the virus-contaminated aerosols. Orthohantavirus infection may cause Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HRFS), a disease that is characterized by acute kidney injury and increased vascular permeability. Several species of orthohantaviruses were identified as causing infection, where Hantaan, Puumala, and Seoul viruses are most common. Orthohantaviruses are endemic to several Asian countries, such as China, South Korea, and Japan. Along with th

INTRODUCTION: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a serious viral disease in mainland China, and Shaanxi Province is one of the most severely affected areas. In order to reduce HFRS incidence, an inactivated bivalent vaccine against Hantaan virus (HTNV) and Seoul virus (SEOV) infections was developed and used in China since the 1990s.
METHODOLOGY: Descriptive epidemiological methods were used to analyze the spatial, temporal, and population distribution of HFRS along with changes in age distribution in Shaanxi Province from January 2004 to December 2023.
RESULTS: A total of 34,26

A study of hantaviral and leptospiral antibodies in selected population groups was performed. Among high risk subjects in the Rome area, Hantaan antibody was found in mammalogists (10%) and dialysis patients (6%), while none of the trappers, oarsmen, river policemen and firemen studied tested positive for antibodies to hantaviruses. In occupationally-exposed subjects (farmers, rangers, lumbermen, hunters) from rural and densely forested areas of northern Italian regions, the prevalence of Hantaan antibody ranged from 3.3% to 8.8%. In the positive cases the comparative antibody titration using

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), caused by Seoul orthohantavirus (SEOV) and Hantaan orthohantavirus (HTNV), remains a neglected rodent-borne zoonosis with persistent residual spillover risk in low-incidence regions of China. This study assessed human HFRS occurrence and small-mammal hantavirus surveillance signals in small-mammal hosts across Zhejiang Province, China, in 2025. Reported human cases were obtained from the National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System, and animal host surveillance was conducted at five designated monitoring sites. A total of 107 HFRS cases were rep

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a rodent-borne viral zoonosis characterized by fever, hemorrhagic manifestations, and renal disorder. The causative agent of HFRS has been identified as a hantavirus. Hantavirus nucleocapsid proteins have recently been shown to be immunodominant antigens in HFRS, inducing an early and long-lasting immune response, and their amino termini are sensitive tools for the detection of specific antibodies in HFRS patient sera. Previous work has demonstrated that the introduction of the acidic tail of alpha-synuclein (ATS) into heat-labile proteins protec

Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), caused by Old World hantaviruses, including Hantaan virus (HTNV) and Seoul virus (SEOV), is an important public-health concern, particularly in Asia. Clinical manifestations range from febrile illness to vascular leakage, thrombocytopenia, haemorrhage and acute kidney injury. The mechanisms underlying variation in disease severity and the variability and durability of vaccine-induced immunity remain incompletely understood. Epigenetic mechanisms, including DNA methylation, histone modifications, chromatin regulation and non-coding RNA-mediated reg

To establish a dual fluorescence quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (DFqRT-PCR) method for typing inactivated bivalent vaccines of Hantaan virus (HTNV, type I) and Seoul virus (SEOV, type II) found in China. Primers and probes were designed based on S segment of the Hantavirus. FAM and HEX were added to the probes for the type I and type II vaccines, respectively. The S fragments were cloned into the pMD18-T vector to create pMD18-T/HTNV and pMD18-T/SEOV plasmids, respectively. The DFqRT-PCR reaction conditions were optimized. The specificity, sensitivity, accuracy, and reproduci

BACKGROUND: In dengue-endemic regions like Vietnam, viral haemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) with overlapping clinical presentations often lead to misdiagnoses. This study investigated alternative VHF pathogens in patients clinically suspected of dengue but negative by standard diagnostics during a 2016 outbreak in central Vietnam.
METHODS: Among 198 hospitalized patients, 52 dengue virus (DENV)-negative cases were tested using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for immunoglobulin G (IgG)/IgM against seven VHFs and molecular assays for pan-flaviviruses and hantaviruses. Positive amplicons were sequen

Specific human leucocyte antigen (HLA) alleles are considered a genetic risk factor for the progression of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) caused by hantaviruses. The aim of this study was to establish whether HLA-DRB alleles are associated with the severity of HFRS caused by different types of hantaviruses in a Chinese Han population from Hubei Province of central China. Twenty-two specific HLA-DRB alleles were analysed by sequence-specific primer-polymerase chain reaction (SSP-PCR) in 100 HFRS patients and 213 healthy volunteers. Associations of HLA-DRB alleles with the severit

Since the introduction of rubella vaccination in Korea in 1982, several outbreaks of rubella have occurred. In order to examine the current seroepidemiology of rubella virus infection in Korean women of child-bearing age, the healthy university women students of Yonsei University in Seoul aged 18 approximately 26 years were chosen as a model population. A survey was carried out in the time of routine annual physical check-up. Serum specimens of 242 volunteers of healthy women university students were randomly sampled for screening rubella-specific IgG/IgM antibodies by an automated enzyme immu
