Manual volumetric segmentation of brain hyperintensities on T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequences in children with neurofibromatosis type 1: inter-rater reliability and clinical correlates.

BACKGROUND: Brain hyperintensities are frequently observed on T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequences of children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). This study aimed to quantitatively analyze the burden of brain hyperintensities in a large pediatric cohort of patients with NF1 using T2WI and FLAIR sequences, assess the inter-rater reliability of manual volumetric segmentation, and explore the relationship between hyperintensity volume and clinical correlates. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed on the clinical and whole-b

Role of Whole-Spine Screening Magnetic Resonance Imaging Using Short Tau Inversion Recovery or Fat-Suppressed T2 Fast Spin Echo Sequences for Detecting Noncontiguous Multiple-Level Spinal Tuberculosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review. PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the role of whole-spine screening using short tau inversion recovery (STIR) or fat-suppressed T2W fast spin echo (FSE) sequences in patients with spinal tuberculosis (TB). OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: The identification of noncontiguous multiple-level spinal tuberculosis (NMLST), symptomatic or not, is important because of its management implications. Most centers do not perform routine whole-spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and the reported incidence of NMLST varies from 1.1% to 74.1%. METHODS:

Analysis of the nucleotide sequence of an invertible controlling element.

The nucleotide sequence of the inversion region responsible for flagellar phase variation in Salmonella was determined. The inversion region is 995 base pairs (bp) in length and is bounded by a 14-bp inverted repeat sequence. A homologous recombination event between the 14-bp inverted repeat sequences would result in the inversion of the DNA segment between them. Sequence homologies with other systems suggest that the 14-bp inverted repeat sequences may have some general significance as sites for specific recombinational events. The gene which specifies H2 flagellin synthesis begins 16 bp outs

Fast FLAIR MRI in childhood white-matter abnormalities.

We compared a fast fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) pulse sequence with a dual-echo short tau fast inversion-recovery (DESTTIR) sequence in 20 children with white matter abnormalities. Although the overall image quality of DESTTIR images was better, the lesion-to-background contrast was significantly higher with the fast FLAIR pulse sequence and lesion detection was more accurate.

Does T2 inversion aid in identifying disc pathologies?

OBJECTIVE: T2 inversion sequence is used in routine radiology practice mainly to heighten contrast resolution within the region to be studied but no evidence exists in current literature to assess it's true efficacy for lumbar disc degeneration. The objective of this study was to analyse T2 inversion and evaluate it's efficacy in assessment of lumbar disc pathology,. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective single-centre study included 50 randomly selected patients presenting with back pain and radiculopathy. T2 inversion sequence was obtained in both axial and sagittal planes in addition to

Improving Detection of Multiple Sclerosis Lesions in the Posterior Fossa Using an Optimized 3D-FLAIR Sequence at 3T.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There is no consensus regarding the best MR imaging sequence for detecting MS lesions. The aim of our study was to assess the diagnostic value of optimized 3D-FLAIR in the detection of infratentorial MS lesions compared with an axial T2-weighted imaging, a 3D-FLAIR with factory settings, and a 3D double inversion recovery sequence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective study, 27 patients with confirmed MS were included. Two radiologists blinded to clinical data independently read the following sequences: axial T2WI, 3D double inversion recovery, standard 3D-FLAIR

Free-breathing combined three-dimensional phase sensitive late gadolinium enhancement and T1 mapping for myocardial tissue characterization.

PURPOSE: To develop a novel MR sequence for combined three-dimensional (3D) phase-sensitive (PS) late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) and T1 mapping to allow for simultaneous assessment of focal and diffuse myocardial fibrosis. METHODS: In the proposed sequence, four 3D imaging volumes are acquired with different T1 weightings using a combined saturation and inversion preparation, after administration of a gadolinium contrast agent. One image is acquired fully sampled with the inversion time selected to null the healthy myocardial signal (the LGE image). The other three images are three-fold und

Control of Helix Screw-Sense Preference in Dynamic Foldamers of meso Symmetry Built From Chiral Monomeric Units.

Meso oligoureas are dynamic hydrogen-bonded foldamers capable of reversible helix polarity inversion but have so far been limited to symmetrical meso-cyclohexane-1,2-diamine monomeric units, limiting both sequence diversity and structural modification. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of meso and "near-meso" oligoureas assembled exclusively from chiral units, thereby expanding the accessible sequence space. Despite their overall symmetry, meso oligoureas display sequence-dependent helix-forming propensities. Controlled desymmetrization of terminal groups induces a preferred h

Intracranial vessel wall imaging at 7.0-T MRI.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Conventional imaging methods cannot depict the vessel wall of intracranial arteries at sufficient resolutions. This hampers the evaluation of intracranial arterial disease. The aim of the present study was to develop a high-resolution MRI method to image intracranial vessel wall. METHODS: We developed a volumetric (3-dimensional) turbo spin-echo (TSE) sequence for intracranial vessel wall imaging at 7.0-T MRI. Inversion recovery was used to null cerebrospinal fluid to increase contrast with the vessel wall. Magnetization preparation was applied before inversion to impr

Direct In Vivo MRI Discrimination of Brain Stem Nuclei and Pathways.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The brain stem is a complex configuration of small nuclei and pathways for motor, sensory, and autonomic control that are essential for life, yet internal brain stem anatomy is difficult to characterize in living subjects. We hypothesized that the 3D fast gray matter acquisition T1 inversion recovery sequence, which uses a short inversion time to suppress signal from white matter, could improve contrast resolution of brain stem pathways and nuclei with 3T MR imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After preliminary optimization for contrast resolution, the fast gray matter acq

Double-strand breaks may initiate the inversion mutation causing the Hunter syndrome.

We have previously shown that patients with the Hunter syndrome frequently have suffered from a recombination event between the IDS gene and its putative pseudogene, IDS-2, resulting in an inversion of the intervening DNA. The inversion, which might be the consequence of an intrachromosomal mispairing, is caused by homologous recombination between sequences located in intron 7 of the IDS gene and sequences located distal of exon 3 in IDS-2. In order to gain insight into the mechanisms causing the inversion, we have isolated both inversion junctions in six unrelated patients. DNA sequence analy

Fast, precise, and accurate myocardial T1 mapping using a radial MOLLI sequence with FLASH readout.

PURPOSE: Quantitative cardiac MRI, and more particularly T1 mapping, has become a most important modality to characterize myocardial tissue. In this work, the value of a radial variant of the conventional modified Look-Locker inversion recovery sequence (raMOLLI) is demonstrated. METHODS: The raMOLLI acquisition scheme consisted of five radial echo trains of 80 spokes acquired using either a fast low-angle shot (FLASH) or a true fast imaging with steady-state-precession (TrueFISP) readout at different time points after a single magnetization inversion. "Black blood" T2-weighted inversion-recovery MR imaging of the heart.

PURPOSE: To develop a short-inversion-time inversion-recovery (STIR) magnetic resonance imaging pulse sequence for evaluating the myocardium that is relatively free of flow and motion artifact. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors implemented a breath-hold, cardiac-triggered STIR sequence with preparatory radio-frequency pulses to eliminate signal from flowing blood. A segmented rapid acquisition with relaxation enhancement (turbo spin echo) readout was used, with the inversion-recovery delay adjusted to null fat. The sequence was implemented at 1.0 and 1.5 T and tested in phantoms, five health

[Basic evaluation of a new technique, tailored contrast truck-fluid-attenuated driven inversion-recovery (TACT-FLADIR), to attenuate the signals of both cerebrospinal fluid and inflow artifacts].

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the new tailored contrast truck-fluid-attenuated driven inversion-recovery (TACT-FLADIR) sequence. Technically, this sequence uses a nonselectively driven inversion (DI) pulse as the inversion pulse. The DI pulse has two parameters, number of refocus pulses (NR) and preparation time (TP). Using normal volunteers, we optimized NR and TP to measure signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratios (CNR) of gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM), and to obtain CSF inflow artifacts. TACT-FLADIR was compared with conventional FLAIR using voluntee

[Plain imaging of meningioma in NMR tomography--retrospective contrast optimization by image synthesis].

Synthetic images of the tumour region were computed in the case of ten meningiomas for the purpose of determining retrospectively pulse sequences and sequence parameters supplying an optimal contrast between tumour and adjacent tissue in plain imaging. It was found that best results were obtained via the partial saturation/spin-echo sequence with a long recovery time (TR approximately greater than 2,000 msec) and a long maximum echo delay (TE max approximately greater than 200 msec). A comparable contrast quality can be attained by using the inversion-recovery sequence with an inversion time T

Synthetic Inversion Image Generation using MP2RAGE T1 Mapping for Surgical Targeting in Deep Brain Stimulation and Lesioning.

BACKGROUND: Advances in MRI technology have increased interest in direct targeting for deep brain stimulation (DBS). Various imaging sequences have been shown to provide increased contrast of numerous common DBS targets, such as T1-weighted, Fast Gray Matter Acquisition T1 Inversion Recovery (FGATIR), gray matter nulled, and Edge-Enhancing Gradient Echo (EDGE); however, the continual increase in the number of necessary sequences has led to an increase in imaging time, which is undesirable. Additionally, carefully timed inversion pulses can often lead to less-than-ideal contrast in some subject

[FLAIR images of cerebral and brain stem infarction].

FLAIR (fluid-attenuated inversion recovery) images are MR images obtained with an inversion recovery sequence having a long inversion time (TI) and a long echo time (TE). We examined 47 cases (56 graphics) of lacunar infarction (LI), 28 cases (32 graphics) of cortical infarction (CI) and 16 cases (23 graphics) of stem infarction (SI) with a FLAIR sequence having a repetitive time (TR) of 6500 msec, a TI of 1700 msec and a TE of 110 msec, and compared these graphics with T2-weighted images by spin-echo sequence (TR 2500 msec, TE 90 msec). LI and CI were better demonstrated with FLAIR images tha
