Right hippocampal excision impairs learning and recall of a list of abstract designs.

The role of the temporal lobes and the hippocampus in learning a list of abstract designs was investigated. Variables studied included trials to criterion, 24-hr delayed recall and serial-position effects. Normal control subjects and four groups of patients, classified according to side of temporal lobectomy and extent of excision from the hippocampal zone, were tested. Patients with a right temporal lobectomy that included a large hippocampal excision showed deficient learning and memory, and, on the serial-position analysis, they recalled essentially none of the first items of the list. Random number generation in autism.

This study explored the ability of individuals with autism to generate a unique series of digits. Fourteen low-functioning individuals with autism, 14 intellectually disabled individuals, and 14 postgraduate university students generated a series of pseudo-random digits. Individuals with autism were more likely to repeat previous digits than were either of the control groups. The normal control group, however, was less likely to attempt cycling through all digits before repeating. Accordingly, low-functioning individuals with autism may exhibit a short-fall in response inhibition. This finding

Memory abilities in children with subtypes of dyscalculia.

This study examines (a) mathematical skills of 2 subgroups of children with developmental dyscalculia (DD)--1 group with DD only and a second group with DD plus reading disorders (RDD)-and (b) analyzes the memory skills of both groups of children. Fifty 11- and 12-year-old children were selected from public schools in Guadalajara, Mexico. Seventeen children had DD only, 13 had RDD, and 20 were normal controls. Testing included 10 calculation and 6 memory subtests taken from the Evaluación Neuropsicológica Infantil (Matute, Rosselli, Ardila, and Ostrosky, in press). Results indicated that child

Intact first- and second-order implicit sequence learning in secondary-school-aged children with developmental dyslexia.

We examined the influence of task complexity on implicit sequence learning in secondary-school-aged children with developmental dyslexia (DD). This was done to determine whether automatization problems in reading extend to the automatization of all skill and depend on the complexity of the to-be-learned skill. A total of 28 dyslexic children between 12 and 15 years and 28 matched control children carried out two serial reaction time tasks using a first-order conditional (FOC) and second-order conditional (SOC) sequence. In both tasks, children incidentally learned a sequence of hidden target p

Digit repetition in brain-damaged adults: clinical and theoretical implications.

Digit repetition was investigated in samples of unilaterally (N = 87) and bilaterally (N = 75) brain-damaged adults. The study was designed to investigate the hemispheric and neuropsychological factors that underlie performance on these two dissimilar tasks. Digit repetition was disproportionately depressed in such patients, especially those with left hemisphere lesions. The incidence of individually impaired digit repetition performance, especially of digits backward, was significantly higher than in normals, again particularly within the left hemisphere sample. However, impaired digit repeti

Dyslexia-related impairments in sequence learning predict linguistic abilities.

Dyslexia is often characterized by disordered word recognition and spelling, though dysfunction on various non-linguistic tasks suggests a more pervasive deficit may underlie reading and spelling abilities. The serial-order learning impairment in dyslexia (SOLID) hypothesis proposes that sequence learning impairments fundamentally disrupt cognitive abilities, including linguistic processes, among individuals with dyslexia; yet only some studies report sequence learning deficits in people with dyslexia relative to controls. Evidence may be mixed because traditional sequence learning tasks often

Shifts in connectivity during procedural learning after motor cortex stimulation: A combined transcranial magnetic stimulation/functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

Inhibitory transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), of which continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) is a common form, has been used to inhibit cortical areas during investigations of their function. cTBS applied to the primary motor area (M1) depresses motor output excitability via a local effect and impairs procedural motor learning. This could be due to an effect on M1 itself and/or to changes in its connectivity with other nodes in the learning network. To investigate this issue, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure changes in brain activation and connectivity during

Dyslexia and fluency: parafoveal and foveal influences on rapid automatized naming.

The ability to coordinate serial processing of multiple items is crucial for fluent reading but is known to be impaired in dyslexia. To investigate this impairment, we manipulated the orthographic and phonological similarity of adjacent letters online as dyslexic and nondyslexic readers named letters in a serial naming (RAN) task. Eye movements and voice onsets were recorded. Letter arrays contained target item pairs in which the second letter was orthographically or phonologically similar to the first letter when viewed either parafoveally (Experiment 1a) or foveally (Experiment 1b). Implicit cognition is impaired and dissociable in a head-injured group with executive deficits.

Implicit or non-conscious cognition is traditionally assumed to be robust to pathology but Gomez-Beldarrain et al. recently showed deficits on a single implicit task after head injury. Laboratory research suggests that implicit processes dissociate. This study therefore examined implicit cognition in 20 head-injured patients and age- and IQ-matched controls using a battery of four implicit cognition tasks: a serial reaction time task (SRT), mere exposure effect task, automatic stereotype activation and hidden co-variation detection. Patients were assessed on an extensive neuropsychological bat

Effects of lesions to ascending noradrenergic neurones on performance of a 5-choice serial reaction task in rats; implications for theories of dorsal noradrenergic bundle function based on selective attention and arousal.

Five experiments examined the effects of destruction of the dorsal noradrenergic bundle (DNAB), arising in the locus coeruleus, both on brightness and spatial visual discrimination, and selective attention. An analogue o Leonard's 5-choice serial reaction task for human subjects was used. Hungry rats were trained to detect brief (0.5 sec) flashes of light presented randomly in one of 5 locations with a fixed intertrial interval of 5 sec, paced by the rat. Correct responses were rewarded with food and incorrect responses punished by time-out (darkness + delay). Following training to high levels

A disturbance in the conceptual organization of actions in patients with ideational apraxia.

Patients with ideational apraxia (i.a.) performed significantly worse than patients without i.a. in a task where they had to arrange pictures in correct order illustrating actions requiring the use of various objects. There was no influence of severity of aphasia nor presence or severity of ideomotor apraxia. In two similar pictorial tasks, where consecutive stages of common events are illustrated, which, however, did not include manipulation of objects, there was no difference in performance of patients with and without i.a. It is concluded that i.a. is a disturbance in the conceptual organiz

Psychological and Behavioral Pathways from Perceived Teacher Support to School Belonging Among Vocational Students: A Three-Wave Longitudinal Study.

School belonging is an important indicator of students' school adjustment and psychological well-being, yet it may be particularly vulnerable among students in Chinese secondary vocational education because of early academic tracking and weak vocational identity. This three-wave longitudinal study examined whether perceived teacher support was associated with later school belonging through self-efficacy and learning engagement. Data were collected from first-year secondary vocational students in China. The baseline valid sample included 9116 students, and 1273 students were retained at Time 3,

The D2/D3-receptor antagonist tiapride impairs concurrent but not sequential taste aversion learning.

Taste aversion learning (TAL) is a learning modality in which the animals reject a gustatory stimulus associated with the administration of noxious visceral substances. This learning can be established by concurrent or sequential procedures that involve different anatomical and functional mechanisms and may constitute distinct learning modalities. The dopaminergic system has been related to various learning processes and goal-directed behaviours. The present study examined the effect of the administration of tiapride, a D(2)/D(3) dopaminergic antagonist, on concurrent and sequential TAL. Resul

Perceived facial expressions of emotion as motivational incentives: evidence from a differential implicit learning paradigm.

Participants (N = 216) were administered a differential implicit learning task during which they were trained and tested on 3 maximally distinct 2nd-order visuomotor sequences, with sequence color serving as discriminative stimulus. During training, 1 sequence each was followed by an emotional face, a neutral face, and no face, using backward masking. Emotion (joy, surprise, anger), face gender, and exposure duration (12 ms, 209 ms) were varied between participants; implicit motives were assessed with a picture-story exercise. For power-motivated individuals, low-dominance facial expressions e

Short-term memory for order but not for item information is impaired in developmental dyslexia.

Recent findings suggest that people with dyslexia experience difficulties with the learning of serial order information during the transition from short- to long-term memory (Szmalec et al. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, & Cognition 37(5): 1270-1279, 2011). At the same time, models of short-term memory increasingly incorporate a distinction of order and item processing (Majerus et al. Cognition 107: 395-419, 2008). The current study is aimed to investigate whether serial order processing deficiencies in dyslexia can be traced back to a selective impairment of short-term

Eye-Tracking Reveals Absent Repetition Learning Across the Autism Spectrum: Evidence From a Passive Viewing Task.

In the domain of memory, autism is characterized by difficulties in explicitly remembering the specific order of stimuli, whereas implicit serial order memory appears to be preserved. This pattern is of considerable interest because serial order memory is known to play a critical role in children's language development. Currently, however, few paradigms exist that can effectively probe serial order memory across heterogeneous groups of children, including those who are minimally verbal. We present two experiments, involving 39 adults (20 ASD; 19 TD) and 130 children (86 ASD; 44 TD), that addre

Access to Procedural Memories After One Year: Evidence for Robust Memory Consolidation in Tourette Syndrome.

Tourette syndrome is a childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. On the neural level, tics are thought to be related to the disturbances of the cortico-basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical loops, which also play an important role in procedural learning. Several studies have investigated the acquisition of procedural information and the access to established procedural information in TS. Based on these, the notion of procedural hyperfunctioning, i.e., enhanced procedural learning, has been proposed. However, one neglected area is the retention of acquired proc

Dissociable implicit sequence learning mechanisms revealed by continuous theta-burst stimulation.

The primary motor area (M1) has been implicated in visuomotor sequence learning. However, it has been suggested there are multiple neural networks that undertake visuomotor sequence learning. The role of M1 in sequence learning may be specific to learning simple sequences comprising predictable associations between adjacent movements. This study aimed to investigate the role of M1 in learning simple ("first-order conditional") and more complex ("second-order conditional") sequences. It was hypothesized that continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) over M1 would result in poorer learning of th
