RNA‑seq analyses of antibiotic resistance mechanisms in Serratia marcescens.

The present study aimed to further clarify the genetic mechanisms responsible for the antimicrobial resistance of Serratia marcescens (S. marcescens) using RNA sequencing. Three drug‑susceptible S. marcescens strains (named MYQT1, MYQT2, and MYQT3) and three multidrug‑resistant S. marcescens strains (named MYQT4, MYQT5, and MYQT6) were isolated from six different patients and subjected to RNA sequencing. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the multidrug‑resistant S. marcescens strains and drug‑susceptible strains were screened and compared, followed by functional enrichment analysis.

Serratia liquefaciens Infection of a Previously Excluded Popliteal Artery Aneurysm.

INTRODUCTION: Popliteal artery aneurysms (PAAs) are rare in the general population, but they account for nearly 70% of peripheral arterial aneurysms. There are several possible surgical approaches including exclusion of the aneurysm and bypass grafting, or endoaneurysmorrhaphy and interposition of a prosthetic conduit. The outcomes following the first approach are favorable, but persistent blood flow in the aneurysm sac has been documented in up to one third of patients in the early post-operative setting. Complications from incompletely excluded aneurysms include aneurysm enlargement, local c

[Serratia marcescens outbreak in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: Guayaquil, Ecuador].

We report a Serratia marcescens outbreak occurred in the NICU of a pediatric hospital in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Nine cases of infection were detected, from which septicemia was developed in 55.5%. The index case was a newborn derived from another institution with septic arthritis caused by the outbreak strain. The infection rate was 17.6% and mortality rate was 33.3%. All isolates were resistant to aminoglycosides and susceptible to third generation cephalosporins and carbapenems. Clonality analysis by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) revealed the presence of two closely related clones con

pH-dependent modulation of alkaline phosphatase activity in Serratia marcescens.

Serratia marcescens is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for causing nosocomial infections, corneal ulcer, necrotizing fasciitis, cellulites, and brain abscess. Alkaline phosphatase (APase) is believed to play an important role in the survival of several intracellular pathogens and their adaptation. We have studied the effect of low phosphate concentration and acid pH on the APase activities of S. marcescens. In a low phosphate medium, some strains of S. marcescens synthesize two different types of APases, a constitutive (CAPase) and an inducible (IAPase). Both the CAPase and IAPase isoenz

Epidemiological analysis of imipenem-resistant Serratia marcescens in hospitalized patients.

Our objective was to examine epidemiological characteristics of hospitalized patients with imipenem-resistant Serratia marcescens. We performed a case-control study using data collected from computerized databases and chart review. Molecular typing by pulsed field gel electrophoresis of available isolates was performed. One hundred and ten patients had Serratia spp isolated during the 23-month study period. Twelve were infected or colonized with S. marcescens resistant or of intermediate susceptibility to imipenem. Eleven of the 12 patients were detected during a seven-month period between Aug

A Serratia marcescens brain abscesses in a preterm infant: An atypical presentation.

Brain abscesses represent a rare yet severe complication of bacterial sepsis in neonates, with Gram-negative bacteria being predominant etiological agents. While Serratia marcescens is an uncommon pathogen in neonatal sepsis and meningitis, it is recognized for its opportunistic nature and association with healthcare-associated infections. Despite advancements in antimicrobial therapies and diagnostic imaging, clinical outcomes in this population remain concerning, with high rates of mortality and long-term neurological sequelae. We present a case of a preterm neonate who developed multiple br

The Genomic Basis of Intrinsic and Acquired Antibiotic Resistance in the Genus Serratia.

Serratia marcescens, a member of the Enterobacteriaceae family, was long thought to be a non-pathogenic bacterium prevalent in environmental habitats. Together with other members of this genus, it has emerged in recent years as an opportunistic nosocomial pathogen causing various types of infections. One important feature of pathogens belonging to this genus is their intrinsic and acquired resistance to a variety of antibiotic families, including β-lactam, aminoglycosides, quinolones and polypeptide antibiotics. The aim of this study was to elucidate which genes participate in the intrinsic an

Serratia fonticola, pathogen or bystander? A case series and review of the literature.

Serratia fonticola is an unusual human pathogen, previously described primarily as causing skin and soft tissue infections following trauma. There is little information in the literature about its treatment or susceptibilities. We describe the case of a 67-year-old male with paraplegia who developed urosepsis due to S. fonticola. Blood and urine cultures obtained prior to the initiation of antimicrobials both grew S. fonticola. The patient completed a 15-day course of antimicrobials and had an uneventful recovery. We reviewed 17 other patients with clinical cultures positive for S. fonticola.

The "other" gram-negative bacteria in mastitis: Klebsiella, serratia, and more.

Mastitis caused by gram-negative infections is of increasing importance on modern and well-managed dairy farms. Without a doubt, E coli tends to be the most important cause of these gram-negative infections when the data are tallied across farms.1 However, more precise investigation of individual farms often reveals a farm-specific infection pattern where a single gram-negative bacterial species predominates. Several farms with a predominance of “other” gram-negative IMIs may be observed. We have shown the presence of outbreaks on individual dairy farms with K pneumoniae, S marcescens, and Ent

Virulence factors and resistance mechanisms of Serratia marcescens. A short review.

Serratia marcescens, a Gram-negative bacillus that belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae, is a human opportunistic pathogen bacterium that causes many diseases, such as urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, bacteremia, conjunctivitis, endocarditis, meningitis and wound infections. Many plasmides that confers multi-drug resistance were discovered, such as virulence factors, like cytotoxins that damage epithelial cells. The main topic of this paper presents a review about the molecular traits evolved in the pathogenic processes mediated by Serratia and its mechanism of resis

Chorioamnionitis caused by Serratia marcescens in a healthcare worker: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at an increased risk for exposure to infections. Serratia marcescens (S. marcescens) is a gram-negative, opportunistic and nosocomial pathogen belonging to the Enterobacterieae family. A few case reports have been published of chorioamnionitis caused by S. marcescens infection. Immunological changes during pregnancy can also affect the risk of infection. However, few studies have examined hospital-acquired bacterial infection in pregnant HCWs. CASE SUMMARY: A 33-year-old woman, a resident in anesthesiology, was admitted at 14 wk gestation for fever wi

[Serratia marcescens multifocal osteomyelitis in a child with chronic granulomatous disease].

Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare primary immuno-deficiency. It is characterized by an alteration in the function of phagocytes causing recurrent bacterial and fungal infections. This is a case report of a child with multifocal osteomyelitis by Serratia marcescens, an infrequent as a cause of bone infections, although associated with CGD. The study of infections with clinical presentation and unusual agents should lead to suspicion of CGD. The diagnosis early in life, as well as timely antimicrobial treatment and the subsequent antimicrobial prophylaxis will avoid infectious recurr
