Irreducible dorsal dislocation of the interphalangeal joint of the great toe: report of two cases.

In this paper, we report two cases of dislocation of the hallux interphalangeal joint with interposition of the plantar plate including the sesamoid bone. These dislocations were treated with open reduction: one through lateral approach and the other through plantar approach. Plantar approach afforded repair of the plantar plate with preservation of the sesamoid bone and satisfactory result.

Osteochondroma of the Tibial Sesamoid: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Osteochondroma, one of the most common benign bone tumors, frequently occurs in the metaphysis of the long bones. We report an extremely rare case of osteochondroma that occurred in the tibial sesamoid. The patient was a 62-year-old Japanese male. He presented with a 1-year history of pain and a hard mass on the plantar aspect of the right forefoot sole. The osteochondroma protruded toward the sole from the tibial sesamoid, leading to pain on weightbearing. After tibial sesamoidectomy, the patient's symptoms were eliminated, and no pain or complications such as hallux valgus occurred after the

An atypical presentation of hallucial sesamoid avascular necrosis: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Sesamoid bone disorders are a rare cause of metatarsal pain and can be difficult to diagnose. This article describes an atypical case of avascular necrosis of the fibular sesamoid in a 62-year-old male. Avascular necrosis of the sesamoid is an infrequent and incompletely defined process. The case described in this report is somewhat atypical as this condition is usually associated with female sex, adolescence, or a precipitating factor of minor trauma. LEVEL OF CLINICAL EVIDENCE: 4.

Deep learning model shows promise for detecting and grading sesamoiditis in horse radiographs.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to develop a robust machine-learning approach for efficient detection and grading of sesamoiditis in horses using radiographs, specifically in data-limited conditions. SAMPLE: A dataset of 255 dorsolateral-palmaromedial oblique (DLPMO) and dorsomedial-palmarolateral oblique (DMPLO) equine radiographs were retrospectively acquired from Hagyard Equine Medical Institute. These images were anonymized and classified into 3 categories of sesamoiditis severity (normal, mild, and moderate). METHODS: This study was conducted from February 1, 2023, to August

The treatment of some fractures of the forelimb in the horse.

Sir Frederick Hobday's service as a Veterinary Officer in the Army Veterinary Corps during the Great War 1914-1918 is recorded. This is followed by a description of the fractures of the distal forelimb which can be treated satisfactorily by surgery, and includes fractures of the carpal, the small metacarpal, the proximal sesamoid bones, the first phalanx and the extensor process of the third phalanx.

Metacarpal fracture associated with lymphosarcoma-induced osteolysis in a horse.

A 19-year-old Appaloosa gelding was reluctant to move. Radiography revealed diffuse, permeative lysis of the cortex and subchondral bone of the phalanges, third metacarpal bones, proximal sesamoid bones, radius, carpal bones, tibia, mandible, and nasal bones of the skull. A comminuted fracture of the distal aspect of the left third metacarpal bone was identified on a lateral to medial radiographic view of the left metacarpophalangeal joint. Histologic examination of the first phalanx, third metacarpal bone, and sternum revealed multifocal infiltrates of nodular lymphosarcoma in cortical and su

Treatment of hyperextension deformity of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint in basal joint arthritis: a novel technique based on an anatomic study.

Advanced stages of basal joint arthritis are sometimes characterized by an adduction deformity of the first metacarpal and a hyperextension deformity of the unstable metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint. Stabilizing the MCP joint in these patients is critical to ensure a pain-free repair and efficient pinch mechanism. This study presents the anatomic basis for a novel capsulodesis technique using the volar plate that can be incorporated into any reconstructive basal joint procedure when clinically indicated. Eleven normal cadavers were dissected to expose the volar plate. The dimensions of the vola

Radiological Anatomy of the Pelvis and Hind Limb of the Southern Giant Pouched Rat (Cricetomys ansorgei).

The southern giant pouched rat (Cricetomys ansorgei) is a large rodent utilised in recognition of landmines, pulmonary tuberculosis and Brucella infection. Additionally, they are kept as pet animals. The aim of this study was to describe the radiological anatomy of the pelvis and hind limb and to provide measurements of the hind limb bones in southern giant pouched rats. Radiological examinations were performed in 10 live and five dead adult southern giant pouched rats. The pelvis had a relatively short pelvic symphysis and the ischial tuberosities were less prominent. The obturator foramina a

Bizarre Parosteal Osteochondromatous Proliferation (Nora's Lesion) in the Medial Sesamoid of the First Toe.

Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation, or Nora's lesion, is a unique bony lesion that generally originates from the small bones of the hands and feet in young adults. We report a case of a bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation originating from the medial sesamoid of the first toe that was managed surgically by en bloc excision. At 5-year follow-up, there was no evidence of recurrence.

Sesamoid non-union treatment using suture anchor fixation.

There is limited research on managing chronic fibular sesamoid non-union, and surgical treatment choices remain debated. A woman in her 20s presents with a 3-year history of intermittent plantar pain beneath the first metatarsal head. Examination reveals first metatarsophalangeal joint instability. Radiographs demonstrate a fractured fibular sesamoid with progressive diastasis; MRI confirms bone oedema consistent with chronic fracture. After failed conservative management, she undergoes open reduction and suture-wire cerclage fixation. This case highlights advanced imaging's role in distinguis

Effect of metatarsal osteotomy and open lateral soft tissue procedure on sesamoid position: radiological assessment.

BACKGROUND: Incomplete sesamoid reduction is a potential risk factor for the recurrence of hallux valgus. The purpose of this study was to radiologically investigate changes in sesamoid position after chevron osteotomy and the open lateral soft tissue procedure. METHODS: Sixty-eight feet that underwent operative correction for hallux valgus deformity were reviewed consecutively. The hallux valgus angle (HVA), first to second intermetatarsal angle (IMA), tibial sesamoid position (TSP), distance of the fibular sesamoid (DFS), and translation of the metatarsal head (TMH) were evaluated preoperat

[Unilateral congenital absence of the carpal scaphoid associated with dysplasia of the capitate. Presentation of a case].

We report on a case of aplasia or unilateral congenital absence of the carpal scaphoid associated with dysplasia of the capitate. Congenital absence of the carpal scaphoid is a rare but well-documented condition. As far as we know, the present case is the seventh one reported in the medical literature. Imaging studies (X-ray and MRI) confirmed the absence of the carpal scaphoid associated with a dysplasia of the capitate and malformation of the radial styloid process. Congenital absence of the scaphoid when other congenital abnormalities (such as hypoplasia or aplasia of either forearm bones o

Tibial and fibular sesamoid fractures on the same metatarsal: a review of two cases.

Fractures of the great toe sesamoids occur much less frequently than fractures of other bones, and, as such, the literature is sparse in dealing with this topic. Two cases of a rare occurrence of tibial and fibular sesamoid fractures on the same metatarsal are reported. Each case had a traumatic origin, and successful healing occurred in one case following 6 weeks of short leg casting. Total excision of both sesamoids was required in case 2 after complete healing was not achieved by short leg casting alone.

Distal Phalangeal Physeal Closure Preceding Ossification of the Thumb Adductor Sesamoid: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Assessment of skeletal maturity is fundamental to pediatric orthopedic practice, as remaining growth potential influences prognosis and treatment decisions. Ossification of the thumb adductor sesamoid is widely used as a pubertal landmark and is expected to precede distal phalangeal physeal closure in established bone age assessment methods. Deviation from this sequence is rarely described. We report a case of distal phalangeal physeal closure occurring in the absence of thumb adductor sesamoid ossification in a patient with growth hormone deficiency. CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old

Septic arthritis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: we describe the case of a 24-year-old male with an initial diagnosis of arthritis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTP). In the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) the abnormal findings were a bipartite medial sesamoid versus fracture of the medial sesamoid. During follow-up, the patient developed a fistula in the first MTP with a positive culture for methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA), leading to the diagnosis of septic arthritis (SA) of the first MTP. Treatment involved surgical debridement and targeted antibiotic therapy, resulting in good outcomes and sati

Utility of (99m)Tc-MDP SPECT-CT for the diagnosis of sesamoiditis as cause of metatarsalgia.

Metatarsalgia is a general term for pain in the area of the metatarsophalangeal joints. Sesamoiditis is an uncommon cause of metatarsalgia. It is pain at the sesamoid bones beneath the head of the first metatarsal with inflammation or fracture. The diagnosis is usually clinical, with localized tenderness on palpation. Diagnosing the cause of metatarsalgia in patients without this classical sign is difficult. We present here such a case of a 37-year-old lady in whom sesamoiditis was diagnosed with technetium-99m ((99m)Tc)-methylene diphosphonate (MDP) single photon emission tomography-computed

[Mineral saturation, ossification and synostosis of the hand bones in adolescents and youth].

The results on X-ray densitometric studies of the hand bones in adolescent and young people at the age of 10--17 years (369 persons in all) are presented in the work. Processes of mineralization, ossification and synostosis, as the investigation has demonstrated, are closely connected with each other. From the beginning of ossification in the pisiform and sesamoid bones of the first metacarpophalageal joint (11--12 years of age) up to the completion of synostosis in short tubular bones of the hand (15--16 years of age), a decrease of mineral salts is noted in osseous tissue. Hence, accumulatio

Relationship Between Plantar Callosity and Foot Deformity in Hallux Valgus Using Weightbearing Computed Tomography.

Plantar callosities under lesser metatarsals are often accompanied by the hallux valgus, and the cause of callosity is thought to be associated with the foot deformity, such as the metatarsal length discrepancy, the abnormal metatarsal head height, cavus, flat foot, and rheumatoid conditions. However, it is unclear which variable is most involved in the cause of callosity in hallux valgus deformity. To clarify the factors associated with the callosity with hallux valgus deformity, we conducted multiple image assessments based on weightbearing radiography and computed tomography. A retrospectiv
