Military Sexual Trauma and its Association with Mental Health Among Sexual Minority and Heterosexual Veterans in the United States.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of military sexual trauma (MST) by sexual orientation, characteristics of sexual minority (SM) and heterosexual veterans who have experienced MST, and associations between sexual orientation and mental health symptoms among veterans who have experienced MST. Methods: Data were analyzed from a nationally representative web-based survey of 4069 U.S. veterans (4.9% SM), which assessed sociodemographic (e.g., age, sexual orientation) and military (e.g., branch) characteristics, and lifetime and current mental health symptoms. Childhood Sexual Abuse and Military Sexual Trauma Interact to Increase Suicide Risk: Results from a Nationally Representative Veteran Sample.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and military sexual trauma (MST) are prevalent among veterans. Such exposures are associated with adverse mental-health sequelae, including elevated risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Nonetheless, prior studies have largely focused upon discrete experiences of CSA or MST in circumscribed samples. In the current study, we analyzed data from a large, nationally representative sample of 4,069 US military veterans to examine main and interactive effects of CSA and MST in relation to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. After accounting for sociodemographics, psychia

Military Sexual Trauma and Eating Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Military sexual trauma (MST) poses a significant public health concern within military populations, with enduring health consequences including the development of eating disorders (EDs). This review synthesizes existing literature to explore the association between MST and EDs among U.S. military populations. A systematic search of electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, and PsycINFO was conducted. Inclusion criteria included observational studies published in peer-reviewed journals, conducted within U.S. military samples, and examining the relationship between MST and EDs among primari

From child sexual abuse to psychiatric diagnoses and complex trauma in adolescence.

CSA (Childhood Sexual Abuse) represents a major health issue, however its detection in daily psychiatric practice is remains challenging. In adolescents, CSA often takes a back seat to diagnostic and behavioral issues such as suicide attempts and BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder), with which it is frequently associated. Additionally, confusion persists between the perspective of complex trauma and conventional psychiatric diagnoses. This study aimed to compare clinical features of hospitalized adolescents with a history of CSA, to a control group, in order to identify clinical predictors o

Childhood sexual trauma and opioid use among older adults living with HIV.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has been linked to substance use and substance use disorders in adulthood. However, there have been limited studies examining the relationship between CSA and opioid use among older adults living with HIV (OALH). Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the association between CSA and opioid use among OALH (n = 91). Data were obtained from an HIV clinic population in South Carolina using paper-and-pen, and online questionnaires. CSA was operationalized using six questions from the Early Trauma Inventory-Self Report Form (Yes vs. No). Opioid use was self-re

Childhood Sexual Trauma and Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence: A Mixed-Methods Systematic Review.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has been shown to be more prevalent among populations living with HIV. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence is crucial for populations living with HIV as it significantly increases the likelihood of attaining and maintaining viral suppression. Previous findings on the association between CSA and ART adherence have been mixed. The current mixed-methods systematic review aimed to identify quantitative and qualitative studies from CINAHL, PsycInfo, PubMed, and Web of Science examining the relationship between CSA and ART adherence. Military Sexual Trauma in Female Veterans is Associated With Chronic Pain Conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about the impact of MST on chronic pain conditions among female Veterans. The primary objective of this study was to compare the prevalence of chronic pain conditions among U.S. female veterans with a history of military sexual trauma (MST) to those without a history of MST. We anticipated that female Veterans with a history of MST would have higher associations with chronic pain conditions than the female Veterans without a history of MST. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a large-scale, retrospective study using the Veterans' Health Administration Corporate Data

The influence of military sexual trauma on returning OEF/OIF male veterans.

Military sexual trauma (MST) encompasses experiences of sexual harassment and/or assault that occur during active duty military service. MST is associated with postdeployment mental health, interpersonal, and physical difficulties and appears to be more influential in the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than other active duty experiences, including combat, among women veterans. Although some literature suggests that men who experience MST also evidence significant postdeployment difficulties, research in this area is lacking. The current study evaluated a large sample of re

"Systemic trauma": the impact on parents whose children have experienced sexual abuse.

This article examines the impact on parents in an Irish context whose children have experienced sexual abuse and aims to explore the pathways to distress. This is in order to understand what factors facilitate or hinder parents from supporting their child to the best of their ability, given that parental support is a crucial moderating factor in children's recoveries. Semistructured interviews were carried out with 13 parents in this context and analyzed using a grounded theory methodology. The overall concept that emerged was termed "systemic trauma" and was composed of eight categories that

Do child abuse and maternal care interact to predict military sexual trauma?

OBJECTIVE: The present research tested the hypothesis that maternal care moderates the relationship between childhood sexual abuse and subsequent military sexual trauma (MST). METHOD: Measures of childhood sexual abuse, maternal care, and MST were administered to 197 Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans. RESULTS: After accounting for gender, age, and the main effects of maternal care and childhood sexual abuse, the maternal care x childhood sexual abuse interaction was a significant predictor of MST (odds ratio = .28, β = -1.26, 95% confidence intervals of .10, .80). As hypothesized, rates of M

Trauma exposure, posttraumatic stress disorder and problem drinking in sexual assault survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual assault history is associated with higher risk of problem drinking in women, yet little is known about mechanisms linking trauma histories to women's problem drinking. This study examined how trauma histories, alcohol-related cognitive mediators and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) relate to past-year problem drinking in adult female sexual assault survivors. METHOD: Data from self-report questionnaires completed by a large, diverse sample (N = 865) of community-residing women who had experienced adult sexual assault were analyzed. Structural equation modeling was used t

A simulated "acquired" imperforate hymen following the genital trauma of sexual abuse.

Imperforate hymen, a condition in which the hymen has no aperture, usually occurs congenitally, secondary to failure of development of a lumen. A case of a documented simulated "acquired" imperforate hymen is presented in this article. The patient, a 5-year-old girl, was the victim of sexual abuse. Initial examination showed tears, scars, and distortion of the hymen, laceration of the perineal body, and loss of normal anal tone. Follow-up evaluations over the next year showed progressive healing. By 7 months after the injury, the hymen was replaced by a thick, opaque scar with no orifice. Pati

Predictors of Trauma-Related Self-Blame in Male Survivors of Sexual Violence.

Survivors of adult sexual assault and child sexual abuse - together encompassing sexual violence (SV) - experience a number of adverse consequences. High rates of self-blame can lead to increased symptomatology and treatment resistance. There has been a paucity of studies of men who have experienced SV, particularly about self-blame. For this study, 179 cisgender male survivors of SV completed an online survey to explore the relationships among 10 variables, including trauma-related self-blame, rape myth acceptance, tonic immobility, disclosure experiences, sexual arousal, and substance use. Gendered Sexual Violence: Betrayal Trauma, Dissociation, and PTSD in Diverse College Students.

Young adults' transition into college includes risk for onset of mental health problems and sexual violence, particularly for women. Compared to men and boys, women and girls across the lifespan are more likely to be sexually abused, with the perpetrators often being someone close to them. High betrayal trauma is linked to varied mental health outcomes. Despite literature depth, many samples are not ethnically diverse, which results in uncertainty about the generalizability of these findings outside of majority White American populations. The purpose of the current study is to assess gender an

Are trauma memories state-dependent? Intrusive memories following alcohol-involved sexual assault.

Background: Sexual assault (SA) frequently occurs under the influence of alcohol, and is often followed by both drinking and posttraumatic stress symptoms, including intrusive memories. Although many theories attempt to explain the co-occurrence of alcohol use and posttraumatic stress, one possibility not yet considered is that SA memories may be more likely to occur when there is an encoding-retrieval match in alcohol intoxication state. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the potential for intrusive memories of SA to be state-dependent, such that intrusive memories for alcohol-in

INTRODUCTION: The current study examined associations between DSM-5 post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and three sexual risk outcomes: presence of a sexually transmitted disease/infection, frequency of condom use, and sex with a known user of injection drugs. METHODS: Data were from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (2012-2013, analyzed 2017), a nationally representative survey of non-institutionalized U.S. adults aged ≥18 years. Sexual outcomes and trauma exposure were assessed via self-report, and PTSD was assessed using a validated structured interv

Memory for neutral, emotional and trauma-related information in sexual abuse survivors.

Previous studies have shown that trauma-exposed individuals, including survivors of sexual abuse, show inferior performance in episodic memory tasks compared to non-exposed controls. This, however, has mainly been tested using neutral content. Our goal in this study was to determine whether this relative impairment in episodic memory extends to generally emotional and trauma-related content. Twenty-seven sexual abuse survivors and 27 control women participated in the study. They listened to stories with three content types (neutral, generally emotional and trauma-related) and performed a free-
