Headbutting through time: A review of this hypothesized behavior in "dome-headed" fossil taxa.

Headbutting is a combative behavior most popularly portrayed and exemplified in the extant bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis). When behaviorally proposed in extinct taxa, these organisms are oft depicted Ovis-like as having used modified cranial structures to combatively slam into one another. The combative behavioral hypothesis of headbutting has a long and rich history in the vertebrate fossil literature (not just within Dinosauria), but the core of this behavioral hypothesis in fossil terrestrial vertebrates is associated with an enlarged osseous cranial dome-an osteological structure with ess

A history of thought on brain injury in head-hitting animals.

Throughout time, humans have observed animals performing head impact behaviors in nature and have wondered whether they sustain brain injury. The resulting literature spans centuries and provides both valuable insight and misguided theories. Bighorn sheep and woodpeckers are the two main species studied in this regard and, simultaneously, in current popular culture they are often represented as being immune to brain injury. How did this narrative arise, and is it accurate? This historical review explores these questions by tracing the development of human thought on animal head impacts from pr

Histophilosis as a Natural Disease.

Histophilus somni is responsible for sporadic disease worldwide in cattle and, to a lesser extent, in small ruminants, bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis), and North American bison (Bison bison). The importance of H. somni diseases can be attributed to improved clinical and laboratory recognition, combined with the growth in intensive management practices for cattle. Although outbreaks of bovine histophilosis can occur year-round, in northern and southern hemispheres, it is most frequent in late fall and early winter. Weather, stress, dietary changes, and comingling of cattle are likely to be majo

An Improved PCR Protocol For Detection of Babesia duncanI In Wildlife and Vector Samples.

Human babesiosis is a tick-borne protozoal disease of increasing clinical significance in North America. Most cases in the eastern and Midwestern regions of the United States are reportedly due to Babesia microti infections. By contrast, most human infections reported in California and Washington have been attributed to a new species that was first identified in 1991 and subsequently named Babesia duncani. Although the tick vector and mammalian reservoir hosts for B. microti are well characterized, the vector and reservoir hosts for B. duncani are unknown. As a result, specific risk factors fo

A fatal case of babesiosis in Missouri: identification of another piroplasm that infects humans.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the etiologic agents (MO1) of the first reported case of babesiosis acquired in Missouri. DESIGN: Case report, serologic testing, animal inoculations, and molecular studies. SETTING: Southeastern Missouri. PATIENT: A 73-year-old man who had had a splenectomy and had a fatal case of babesiosis. MEASUREMENTS: Serum specimens from the patient were assayed by indirect immunofluorescent antibody testing and immunoprecipitation for reactivity with antigens from various Babesia species. Whole blood obtained from the patient before treatment was inoculated into hamsters

Safety of Brucella abortus strain RB51 vaccine in non-target ungulates and coyotes.

Brucellosis is endemic in free-ranging elk (Cervus elaphus) and bison (Bison bison) in the Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA; USA). It is possible that an oral brucellosis vaccine could be developed and disseminated in the GYA to reduce disease transmission. Should this occur, non-target species other than elk and bison may come in contact with the vaccine resulting in morbidity or mortality. To assess biosafety, bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis; n = 10), pronghorn (Antilocapra americana; n = 9), mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus; n = 11), moose (Alces alces shirasi; n = 10), and coyotes (Canis latrans
