The occurence of coxiellosis among rodents and shrews in the Tarai area of Uttar Praedesh.

Rodents and shrews were screened for serologic evidence of Coxiella burnetii. Attempts were made to isolate the organism from the spleen and liver. Seroreactors: total positive/total tested (% positive), in rats (Rattus rattus, R. norvegicus), ground shrews (Suncus murinus), bandicoots (Bandicota indica, B. bengalensis) and the house mouse (Mus musculus), respectively, were 13/105 (12.38), 6/42 (14.3), 2/15 (13.3) and 1/7 (14.3). Of the eight rickettsial isolants recovered including four from field and household rats, three from ground shrew and one from bandicoots, only three comprising one e

Decoding thymic development: a single-cell atlas of tree shrew immunity.

The tree shrew is a potential mammalian model for preclinical studies, but its immune system is not well understood. In this study, we utilized single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to construct a comprehensive cell atlas of the postnatal thymus development of the tree shrew. Our data revealed that the tree shrew thymocytes exhibit conserved features with species-specific variations in cell states and types when compared to those of humans and pigs. We found that tree shrew thymocyte markers are generally intermediate between humans and pigs, with some resembling each species. Some are differ

Arterial supply to the adrenal gland in the house musk shrew (Suncus murinus).

Branching patterns of the adrenal artery exhibit interspecies and individual variations. As Eulipotyphla species have distinctive morphological characteristics, observations in this group may provide insights into the comparative anatomy of this artery. This study used 15 house musk shrews (Suncus murinus). In most cases, adrenal arteries arose from a single parent artery, namely the caudal phrenic artery, abdominal aorta, or renal artery. In one left case, adrenal arteries emerged from both the abdominal aorta and renal artery. The most common pattern of adrenal arterial supply was one middle

Phyllodes tumor in the mammary gland of a northern tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri).

A rapidly growing mass was observed in the left third mammary gland of a 5-and-a-half-year-old intact female northern tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri). Histopathologically, the mass was composed of numerous irregularly dilated mammary ducts with a pericanalicular or intracanalicular pattern. These mammary ducts showed a leaf-like structure due to the proliferations of surrounding spindle-shaped neoplastic cells with moderate to severe nuclear atypia. We diagnosed this case as a phyllodes tumor in a mammary gland of a northern tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri), which closely resembled those occurring

Cestode diversity in shrews from islands in the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk.

A comparative analysis of taxonomic diversity on shrew cestodes among four islands in the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk (Sakhalin, Kunashir, Hokkaido, and Moneron) was performed. Cestode species shared among the islands were identified and their host specificity was investigated. On Sakhalin Island, 33 species of the families Hymenolepididae, Dilepididae and Mesocestoididae were recorded in four shrew species (Sorex caecutiens, S. gracillimus, S. minutissimus and S. unguiculatus). In S. caecutiens, S. gracillimus, and S. unguiculatus on Kunashir Island, 22 species of the same families we

Decoding the RNA viromes in shrew lungs along the eastern coast of China.

Shrews being insectivores, serve as natural reservoirs for a wide array of zoonotic viruses, including the recently discovered Langya henipavirus (LayV) in China in 2018. It is crucial to understand the shrew-associated virome, viral diversity, and new viruses. In the current study, we conducted high-throughput sequencing on lung samples obtained from 398 shrews captured along the eastern coast of China, and characterized the high-depth virome of 6 common shrew species (Anourosorex squamipes, Crocidura lasiura, Crocidura shantungensis, Crocidura tanakae, Sorex caecutiens, and Suncus murinus).

Dosage selection and effect evaluation of sodium pentobarbital in tree shrew anesthesia.

To achieve surgical anesthesia in animal experimentation, it is important to select the appropriate anesthetic dose. However, few studies have investigated the reasonable anesthetic dose in tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri). The aim of the study was to review the literature to determine the most commonly used anesthetic dose in tree shrew and to calculate the reasonable equivalent dose between tree shrew and rat based on the body surface area conversion. Two groups of 10 adult tree shrews each were anesthetized with 1% sodium pentobarbital through intraperitoneal injection separately at doses of 6

Tree Shrew Is a Suitable Animal Model for the Study of Epstein Barr Virus.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a human herpesvirus that latently infects approximately 95% of adults and is associated with a spectrum of human diseases including Infectious Mononucleosis and a variety of malignancies. However, understanding the pathogenesis, vaccines and antiviral drugs for EBV-associated disease has been hampered by the lack of suitable animal models. Tree shrew is a novel laboratory animal with a close phylogenetic relationship to primates, which is a critical advantage for many animal models for human disease, especially viral infections. Herein, we first identified the key r

Aspects of tree shrew consolidated sleep structure resemble human sleep.

Understanding human sleep requires appropriate animal models. Sleep has been extensively studied in rodents, although rodent sleep differs substantially from human sleep. Here we investigate sleep in tree shrews, small diurnal mammals phylogenetically close to primates, and compare it to sleep in rats and humans using electrophysiological recordings from frontal cortex of each species. Tree shrews exhibited consolidated sleep, with a sleep bout duration parameter, τ, uncharacteristically high for a small mammal, and differing substantially from the sleep of rodents that is often punctuated by

Recapitulating Zika Virus Infection in Vagina of Tree Shrew (Tupaia belangeri).

Sexual transmission of Zika Virus (ZIKV) elevates the risk of its dissemination in the female reproductive tract and causes a serious threat to the fetus. However, the available animal models are not appropriate to investigate sexual transmission, dynamics of ZIKV infection, replication, and shedding. The use of tree shrew as a small animal model of ZIKV vaginal infection was assessed in this study. A total of 23 sexually mature female tree shrews were infected with ZIKV GZ01 via the intravaginal route. There was no significant difference in change of body weight, and the temperature between Z

Potential energetic implications of emesis in the house musk shrew (Suncus murinus).

During the course of studies investigating novel anti-emetic therapies we serendipitously observed a previously unreported behaviour related to emesis in the house musk shrew. This behaviour consisted of spontaneous ingestion of vomit in about half of the animals (males and females) in which emesis was induced by either nicotine (4 mg kg-1 sc.) or horizontal motion (1 Hz, 4 cm, 10 min). Analysis of vomit samples and gastric contents revealed that in a "typical" individual the gastric contents would be voided by as few as 3 vomits. Energetic calculations of the metabolisable energy of food, gas

A new spontaneous animal model of NIDDM without obesity in the musk shrew.

The EDS (early-onset diabetes in suncus) colony has been developed as a new closed breeding colony of the musk shrew (Suncus murinus, Insectivora) exhibiting a high incidence of spontaneous diabetes mellitus. We investigated the characteristic features of diabetic shrews in this colony. All diabetic shrews are characterized by glycosuria (Tes-tape value > or = 3+), hyperglycemia (23.3 +/- 0.8 mmol/l) and polyuria, and they were affected by the age of 3 months. Cumulative incidence (64.1% in males and 27.8% in females) was kept intact after the age of 3 months. The growth pattern of diabetic sh

Significance of the localization of large granules in the thyrogonadotrophs of the musk shrew (Suncus murinus).

In order to examine the significance of small round and large granules in the thyrogonadotrophs of the musk shrew, we investigated the differences of numbers, distribution patterns and/or immunoreactivities of the large granules in the thyrogonadotrophs among the newborn, infant and adult musk shrews. As a result, we observed that the thyrogonadotrophs exist in newborn musk shrew, but the large granules were few in number and immunoreactivity on the granules was weak. The ratio of the number of large granule-containing cells to all LH beta positive cells was very low (6.2%) in newborn musk shr

Psychosocial stress affects pineal function in the tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri).

Using a recently developed commercially available radioimmunoassay the concentration of the principal melatonin metabolite 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (aMT6s) in the morning urine of male tree shrews was determined. Chronic social confrontation elicited a drastic increase of aMT6s excretion in subordinate tree shrews, whereas there was a tendency to reduced excretion of the melatonin metabolite in dominant animals. These results substantiate the function of the pineal gland in transforming stimuli from the social environment to endocrine information and, therefore, are indicative for the relevant rol

A Golgi study of the medial geniculate body in the tree shrew (Tupaia glis).

The subdivisions of the medial geniculate body in Tupaia recognized in previous connectional and cytoarchitectural studies are identified in Golgi-impregnated material. They may be distinguished by the organization of the neuropil, especially the dendrites, and, in many cases, by differences in the neurons. The ventral nucleus contains tufted cells with disc-shaped dendritic fields which are aligned to form laminae. The caudomarginal and deep dorsal nuclei have less tufted, less precisely arranged cells with longer, thin appendages. Neurons in the suprageniculate and dorsal nuclei are similar

Ectoparasites Diversity on Rodents and Shrews at Scrub Typhus Endemic Vellore District of Tamil Nadu, India.

BACKGROUND: Rodents and shrew living in the vicinity of human beings perform significant role to harbor different species of ectoparasites and thus act as the reservoir host for the spread of diseases to human and animals. METHODS: This study was undertaken to determine the species composition of the medically important ectoparasites present in the scrub typhus affected places of Vellore District using wonder and Sherman traps for trapping of live Rodent/Shrew during September 2017 to August 2018. RESULTS: Rodent/shrew hosts belonged to two Families, three sub families and five genera and fi

Washed Microbiota Transplantation Accelerates the Recovery of Abnormal Changes by Light-Induced Stress in Tree Shrews.

The gut and brain interact constantly in a complex fashion. Its intricacy and intrigue is progressively being revealed in the study of the "gut-brain axis". Among many factors, abnormal light exposure is a potential powerful stressor, which is becoming ever more pervasive in our modern society. However, little is known about how stress, induced by staying up late by light, affects the gut-brain axis. We addressed this question by extending the normal circadian light for four hours at night in fifteen male tree shrews to simulate the pattern of staying up late in humans. The behavior, biochemic

Comprehensive Glycomic Profiling of Respiratory Tract Tissues of Tree Shrews by TiO2-PGC Chip Mass Spectrometry.

Due to its relatively small size, homology to humans, and susceptibility to human viruses, the tree shrew becomes an ideal alternative animal model for the study of human viral infectious diseases. However, there is still no report for the comprehensive glycan profile of the respiratory tract tissues in tree shrews. In this study, we characterized the structural diversity of N-glycans in the respiratory tract of tree shrews using our well-established TiO2-PGC chip-Q-TOF-MS method. As a result, a total of 219 N-glycans were identified. Moreover, each identified N-glycan was quantitated by a hig

Parallel thalamic activation of the first and second somatosensory areas in prosimian primates and tree shrews.

In Tupaia belangeri and Galago senegalensis, microelectrode recordings immediately after ablation of the representation of the forelimb in the midportion of the first somatosensory area, S-I, revealed that all parts of the second somatosensory area, S-II, remained highly responsive to cutaneous stimuli. In this way, prosimian primates, close relatives of simian primates, and tree shrews differ markedly from monkeys in which S-II is deactivated by comparable ablations, and resemble such mammals as cats and rabbits in which S-II also remains highly responsive following ablations in S-I. Thus, it

Neutralizing monoclonal antibodies protect against human adenovirus type 55 infection in transgenic mice and tree shrews.

Re-emerging human adenovirus type 55 (HAdV55) has become a significant threat to public health due to its widespread circulation and the association with severe pneumonia, but an effective anti-HAdV55 agent remains unavailable. Herein, we report the generation of macaque-derived, human-like monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) protecting against HAdV55 infection with high potency. Using fluorophore-labelled HAdV55 virions as probes, we isolated specific memory B cells from rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) that were immunized twice with an experimental vaccine based on E1-, E3-deleted, replication-inco
