The nature and expression of social phobia: toward a new classification.

Social phobia (social anxiety disorder) was officially recognized as a distinct clinical entity only with the publication of the DSM-III in 1980. Research on the psychopathology of this disorder has revealed a great degree of heterogeneity in its symptomatology. In order to acknowledge this heterogeneity, later versions of the nosological system introduced the generalized subtype of social phobia to describe individuals who fear most or all social situations. The empirical literature on the differences between the diagnostic subtypes has yielded inconsistent findings. Based on the recent emoti

Agonistic behaviour and energy metabolism of bold and shy swimming crabs Portunus trituberculatus.

The metabolism and behaviour of crustaceans are highly flexible, and the inter-individual variation in these traits is evolutionarily and ecologically significant. We analysed the relationships among personality traits (boldness, activity and hesitancy), agonistic behaviour and energy status (glycogen, glucose and lactate) in the swimming crab Portunus trituberculatus The main results were as follows. (1) Boldness was significantly correlated with activity and hesitancy. Bold crabs were more likely to initiate and win a fight. In bold individuals, the frequencies of 'move to', 'cheliped displa

[The history and current state of communication avoidance research].

The ability to communicate effectively has a profound impact on academic ability and social status in the United States. As such, communication avoidance may impart critical consequences on individuals who suffer from it. Within the communication discipline, communication avoidance is an extensive body of research with a relatively long history. Central to communication avoidance research is the concept of communication apprehension (CA). However, in comparison with research conducted in the United States, CA research in Japan remains in its genesis. This review thus focuses on communication a

Anxiety syndromes in childhood and adolescence.

Anxieties are very widespread in children and adolescents, they only rarely to lead to the need for medical care. Physiological anxieties as phenomena dependent on maturity are differentiated from anxiety syndromes typical to age according to the degree of severity or the persistence of the signs and symptoms. Typical forms of age-typical syndromes are fear of separation, childish phobias, anxiety syndromes with shyness, going into one's shell, avoidance behaviour as well as school phobias. These confront the generalized anxiety disorders and the phobias as anxiety syndromes, which occur in ch

Circumcision for phimosis--indications and results.

A follow-up study including all boys (n = 117) operated with circumcision for phimosis during 1976 was performed. Most patients were operated on an outpatient basis. Early complications like bleeding or infection were few and mild. In 13 cases there was a postoperative stricture of the urethral orifice which had to be widened. Five patients had complaints about the cosmetic result. Eight boys expressed shyness and unwillingness to undress in school gym. In no instance were there any signs of a more serious psychological disorder. The operative indications are discussed and it is concluded that

Profiles of Anxiety in Children Undergoing Elective Surgery: Predictors and Perioperative Outcomes.

Surgery is an anxiety-provoking event, but there are individual differences in the magnitude of experienced anxiety. The objective of this study was to identify patterns of children's preoperative anxiety, its predictors, and perioperative outcomes. The sample included 171 children (Mage = 9.95 years) undergoing elective surgery. We derived groups of children's anxiety based on multiple indicators (i.e., self-report, heart rate, and frontal brain EEG activity) during a preoperative visit and on the day of surgery. Parents and children reported on children's temperament, children's behavior was

Systematic assessment of 50 children with selective mutism.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the diagnostic significance of selective mutism (elective mutism in DSM-III-R). METHOD: Fifty children with selective mutism were evaluated systematically by means of semistructured clinical interviews and rating scales to obtain detailed diagnostic information. RESULTS: All 50 children met DSM-III-R criteria for social phobia or avoidant disorder and 24 (48%) had additional anxiety disorders. Clinical measures of anxiety and behavioral symptoms supported the presence of anxiety disorders as a characteristic of selectivity mute children. Only one case each of opposition

High anxieties: the social construction of anxiety disorders.

Anxiety has always been part of the human condition, with accounts of its various manifestations, including acute shyness and stage fright, dating back to classical antiquity. Nonetheless, since the end of the Second World War, reported levels of anxiety have risen alarmingly. At the beginning of the 21st century, anxiety disorders constitute the most prevalent mental health problem around the globe, afflicting millions of people. What social factors account for this stunning development in the mental health field during the past half century? Some observers target the ever increasing pace and

[Urinary retention caused by vulvar carcinoma].

Epidermoid carcinoma is the most frequent neoplasia of the vulva. It usually appears in aged post-menopausal women (51-70 years). The signs and symptoms are unremarkable: vulvar bulk or protuberance, pruritus, painful ulcer, flow, vulvar irritation, dysuria or haemorrhage, all of which motivate that this condition may be ignored, overlooked, or be the cause of self-treatment. At other times a dangerous shyness causes considerable delays by postponing the visit to the specialist. Many patients refuse to go to see a physician. The existence of urinary signs and symptoms in a patient with vulvar

A digital iCBT intervention for social anxiety disorder in Quebec and Ontario: protocol for a multi-phase effectiveness-implementation study.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most prevalent anxiety disorders in Canada. Viable therapy options for the treatment of SAD include CBT being delivered virtually. In Australia, an innovative internet-delivered cognitive-behavioral therapy (iCBT) program for social anxiety has been developed, implemented, and demonstrated as effective. To make available high-quality and real-time evidence in response to the crucial need to access psychological services to meet population mental health needs, we propose to conduct a Canadian adaptation of the iCBT Shyness Program and to e

Recent findings in social phobia among children and adolescents.

Childhood social phobia (SP) is common and associated with varying forms of impairment. The cause of social anxiety disorder is often complex, involving both genetic and environmental factors. Shyness in young children may be a possible precursor to social anxiety later in life, although not the sole antecedent. Current assessment of childhood social anxiety includes psychometrically sound self report and clinician administered measures either specifically targeting SP disorder or including the construct as a subscale of a broader measure. The type of measure that is used most often depends on

The etiology of social phobia: toward a developmental profile.

Social phobia is an extremely disruptive and distressing anxiety disorder that can impact on many areas of an individual's life. Yet, despite the fact that lifetime prevalence rates are relatively high, its etiology is still poorly understood. The aim of this review is to draw together findings from the broad base of nonclinical literature associated with behavioral inhibition (BI), shyness, social anxiety, and passive-anxious withdrawal and to compare these findings with those from the limited number of clinical studies with social phobics. Such comparison is not unproblematic due to conceptu

Developmental learning disabilities of the right hemisphere. Emotional, interpersonal, and cognitive components.

In 14 patients, we encountered a behavioral syndrome that begins in early life and is characterized by emotional and interpersonal difficulties, shyness, visuospatial disturbances, and inadequate paralinguistic communicative abilities. All 14 patients had at least average intellectual capacity, but each had demonstrated some academic failure, particularly in arithmetic. Examination revealed neurologic and neuropsychological signs consistent with right-hemisphere dysfunction. Most of the patients avoided eye contact and lacked the gestures and prosody that normally accompany and accentuate spee

Depression: Predisposing factors.

Factors predisposing to a depressive state had been investigated in a prospective study on a stratified population, accounted for in the preceding article (Nyström & Lindegård (1975a) ). Of the 114 persons seeking psychiatric care during the period of observation, 37 had a depression as the main diagnosis. As compared to their 370 matched controls, these patients showed a significant overrepresentation of psychasthenic traits (subvalidity according to Sjöbring), a tendency to ruminate, shyness in company and lack of endurance, certain asthenic subclinical symptoms such as habitual fatigue and

Symptom and personality profiles of young adults from a college student population with self-reported illness from foods and chemicals.

Despite much debate over a presumptively somatic vs psychological etiology of nonatopic food and chemical sensitivities, little systematic research has addressed the issues. The present study investigated self-reported illness from several common foods (wheat, dairy, eggs) and chemicals (pesticide, car exhaust, paint, perfume, new carpet), symptom patterns, and psychological profiles of a sample of young adult college students (n = 490, age 19.4 +/- 2.4, 52% female/48% male). Subjects were divided into 4 groups on the basis of sample medians for frequency of illness from the foods (FI) and che

Facing the Crowd With a Racing Heart: A Lived Experience of Social Anxiety in Nursing Education.

INTRODUCTION: Social phobia is a mental health condition often misunderstood as shyness and mostly undiagnosed. This condition significantly affects the academic performance, practical skills, and psychological well-being of individuals, resulting in reduced contribution to society and the nation's economy. The aim of this lived experience narrative is to present the experience of social phobia within nursing education and emphasize the implications for mental health nursing practice. METHOD: This is a first-person narrative to describe the personal experience with social phobia and its impac

Social anxiety disorder.

Our understanding of social anxiety disorder (also known as social phobia) has moved from rudimentary awareness that it is not merely shyness to a much more sophisticated appreciation of its prevalence, its chronic and pernicious nature, and its neurobiological underpinnings. Social anxiety disorder is the most common anxiety disorder; it has an early age of onset--by age 11 years in about 50% and by age 20 years in about 80% of individuals--and it is a risk factor for subsequent depressive illness and substance abuse. Functional neuroimaging studies point to increased activity in amygdala and

Social phobia: overview of community surveys.

OBJECTIVE: Social phobia has in recent years been recognized as a considerable public health concern. This paper presents an overview of community studies that have estimated the prevalence of social phobia, its subtypes, and specific social fears in the adult general population. Sociodemographic findings are also summarized. METHOD: Forty-three epidemiological studies from 1980 to the present were located in electronic databases and by complementary searches of citations in journal articles and book chapters. RESULTS: Recent surveys estimate the lifetime prevalence of social phobia at about

Anaesthesia for aboriginal Australians.

This prospective study was designed to describe problems that arise when Aboriginal people undergo anaesthesia, in order to develop guidelines for anaesthetists who are not accustomed to treating Aboriginal people. Data were collected on 1122 consecutive different individuals undergoing anaesthesia at Royal Darwin Hospital, 24.5% of whom described themselves as Aboriginal. Aboriginal patients were in a poorer physiological state than were non-Aboriginal patients. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus, renal disease and rheumatic heart disease reported in Aboriginal patients was very high. Commun
