BACKGROUND: Injections of botulinum toxin A are an effective treatment for sialorrhea in Parkinson's disease (PD). Based on the relatively high rates of dry mouth seen with botulinum toxin B, there is reason to suspect that it may also improve sialorrhea.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether botulinum toxin B (Myobloc; Elan Pharmaceuticals, New York, NY) is a safe and effective treatment for sialorrhea in patients with PD.
METHODS: Demographics, PD treatments, head posture, the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), two questionnaires regarding drooling, Visual Analogue Scale, global i

A sublingual atropine ophthalmic solution is increasingly used as an off-label therapy for the symptomatic management of refractory sialorrhea because of its rapid onset of action, ease of administration, and generally favourable safety profile when used at recommended doses. Although generally well-tolerated at therapeutic doses, systemic anticholinergic toxicity may occur following medication administration errors or unintentional overdose. We report the case of a 76-year-old man with recurrent head and neck squamous cell carcinoma receiving palliative systemic therapy who presented with acu

BACKGROUND: Sialorrhea is a common concern in patients with swallowing disorders after stroke. Atropine sulfate blocks the muscarinic receptors in the salivary glands and leads to reduced saliva production.
OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to assess the safety, efficacy, and tolerability of sublingual administration of atropine eye drops for treating sialorrhea after stroke.
DESIGN: This was a prospective cohort study.
SETTING: This study was conducted at Xiangyang No. 1 People's Hospital, Hubei University of Medicine, Hubei Province, China.

Chronic sialorrhea is a debilitating condition commonly seen in patients with neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy. RimabotulinumtoxinB (RIMA) is approved for treating sialorrhea, with a recommended dose range of 1500-3500 units. We report a case of a 48-year-old female with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, profound intellectual disability, and chronic sialorrhea who was treated with progressively higher doses of RIMA, culminating in a dose of 20,000 units administered via injections into the parotid and submandibular glands. So far, the patient has received 22 treatment cycles of

INTRODUCTION: Sialorrhea is a common neurological manifestation of Parkinson's disease (PD). No specifically designed prospective study has tested the effects of deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) on sialorrhea in patients with advanced PD. We focused on the effect of STN-DBS on the incidence of sialorrhea in patients with PD.
METHODS: This multicenter, prospective, non-randomized concurrent clinical trial analyzed the incidence of sialorrhea during long-term follow-up in 170 patients with advanced PD (84 patients with STN-DBS and 86 patients with medication therapy).

BACKGROUND: Chronic sialorrhea is a common problem for pediatric patients with disorders that affect swallowing. While many patients are successfully treated with medical therapies such as Robinul and Scopolamine, a number of such children are not able to tolerate the side effects of these medications. In these cases, surgical treatments can include Botulinum toxin A (Botox) injections into the major salivary glands, sublingual or submandibular gland excision (SMGE), submandibular duct ligation, parotid duct ligation (PDL), or any combination of the above procedures. The purpose of this study

INTRODUCTION: Sialorrhea is a frequent and disabling non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD) and atypical parkinsonian syndromes, often exerting a serious impact on patients' health and quality of life (QoL). Botulinum toxin injections into the major salivary glands, which reduce salivary secretion, represent an established and effective therapy. However, even with adequate operator training and ultrasound guidance, transient dysphagia may occur. Low-energy extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is a noninvasive neuromodulatory technique that has shown anticholinergic-like and antispas

Antipsychotic-induced sialorrhea carries a significant burden, but evidence-based treatment guidance is incomplete, warranting network meta-analysis (NMA) of pharmacological interventions for antipsychotic-related sialorrhea. PubMed Central/PsycInfo/Cochrane Central database/Clinicaltrials.gov/WHO-ICTRP and the Chinese Electronic Journal Database (Qikan.cqvip.com) were searched for published/unpublished RCTs of antipsychotic-induced sialorrhea (any definition) in adults, up to 06/12/2023. We assessed global/local inconsistencies, publication bias, risk of bias (RoB2), and confidence in the evi

Literature provides reports only of a limited follow-up single injection of botulinum toxin-A (BoNT-A) in patients with sialorrhea. The aim of our study is to evaluate the long-lasting efficacy and safety of ultrasound-guided BoNT-A injections for severe sialorrhea secondary to neurological dysphagia. We enrolled 38 severe adult sialorrhea patients referred consecutively to the neurology unit and performed bilateral parotid and submandibular gland BoNT-A injections under ultrasound guidance. The outcomes of the study were reduction of sialorrhea, duration of therapeutic effect, and subjective

INTRODUCTION: Sialorrhea is a distressing symptom accompanying oral cancer and many heterogeneous cancer-related conditions (chemotherapy-induced nausea, bowel subocclusion, pharmacologic side effects), but its incidence is low in cancer patients. Conversely, it is frequent in patients with neurological damage, and some therapeutic options have been attempted such as botulinum toxins, anticholinergic agents, and surgical procedures.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of an 80-year-old woman with peritoneal carcinomatosis and bowel subocclusion, suffering from distressing nausea and sialorrhea th

Background: Sialorrhea is associated with various neurological conditions. Among critically ill patients with acute neurological injuries (ANI), sialorrhea leads to several adverse consequences, including extubation failure, inability to initiate non-invasive ventilation, aspiration pneumonia and prolonged hospitalization. Botulinum toxin (BoTN) injections can reduce salivary production. Both BoTN-A and BoTN-B are effective in managing sialorrhea among patients with neurogenic dysphagia. BoTN utilization for sialorrhea in critically ill adult ANI patients is not well-studied. Purpose: The purp

IMPORTANCE: Refractory sialorrhea in children can result in pulmonary aspiration and irreversible lung damage. Despite many studies devoted to the surgical treatment of sialorrhea, there is a paucity of objective outcome measures after surgery, especially with regard to pulmonary health.
OBJECTIVES: To assess whether bilateral submandibular gland excision and bilateral parotid duct ligation ("DROOL" procedure) is associated with reduced pulmonary inflammation in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples after surgery and to assess patient factors associated with improvement after surgery.

Sialorrhea is a common and distressing symptom in patients with neurological disorders, often impairing quality of life and increasing the risk of aspiration. Although oral anticholinergic agents are widely prescribed, their systemic side effects frequently limit long-term adherence. This study investigated the dose-response relationship and systemic safety of transdermal scopolamine applied directly over the salivary glands in a rat model. Formulations containing 0.2%, 0.5%, 1%, and 5% scopolamine (0.05 g per rat) were compared with oral administration at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg. Transdermal appl
