Sick leave due to diarrhea caused by contamination of drinking water supply with Cryptosporidium hominis in Sweden: a retrospective study.

We investigated sick leave from work, studies, preschool, and kindergarten occurring between 1 November 2010 and 31 January 2011 and associated with a waterborne outbreak of diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium hominis in late November 2010 in Östersund, Sweden with 45.2% of 60,000 residents being symptomatic. A questionnaire defining acute watery diarrhoea and/or ≥3 diarrhea episodes/day as cryptosporidiosis was sent to 1,508 residents in late January 2011 (response rate 69.2%). Among adults aged 18-60 years, 24.0% took sick leave for a mean of 4.6 (SD ± 4.0) days due to cryptosporidiosis, and

Fifteen-year trends of long-term disability and sick leaves in ankylosing spondylitis.

The aim of this study is to assess the trends in work disability and sick leave in ankylosing spondylitis (AS). In 1993 and 2007, patients diagnosed with AS that attended to a secondary- or a tertiary-care outpatient rheumatology clinics were evaluated for demographics, disease characteristics, axial mobility, working status, and work days missed due to sick leave or permanent disability. Factors that impacted labor status were identified by multiple regression analysis. In 1993, 91 study individuals (mean age 35 years, mean disease duration 10 ± 8 years) included 28 (31%) on permanent disabil

Diverging trajectories of job demands, job resources, and psychological distress before long-term mental health-related sick leave among teachers.

STUDY AIMS: The prevalence of Long COVID in children and adolescents is heterogeneous, ranging from 1% to 51%, depending on the population studied. The lack of a standardised approach for establishing a Long COVID diagnosis in children and adolescents complicates the accurate assessment of prevalence, risk factors and outcomes. The present study aimed to examine the value of standardised interviews and an adjudication process to better understand self- or proxy-reported symptoms lasting longer than 12 weeks compatible with Long COVID in children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. Antidepressant treatment initiation and public sick-leave compensation in the following year: a register-based prospective cohort study in Denmark.

OBJECTIVES: Mental disorders have caused increasing sickness absence and related benefit claims in the OECD countries. This study investigates the association between antidepressant treatment initiation and public sick leave compensation (PLSC) in the following year in Denmark. METHODS: The study was designed as a register-based prospective cohort study. We included 39,401 adults (aged 18-65 years) with at least 12 consecutive months of full-time labour market attachment who had initiated first-time antidepressant monotherapy for depression or anxiety between 1 January 2015 and 31 December 20

Decline in the rate of occupational injuries and illnesses following the implementation of a paid sick leave law in Connecticut.

BACKGROUND: Workers with paid sick leave may have a lower rate of occupational injuries compared with other workers. This study sought to determine whether there was a decline in the rate of occupational injuries and illnesses following the implementation of a paid sick leave law in Connecticut (CT). METHODS: Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics was used to calculate the rate of occupational injuries and illnesses in CT in the 3 years before (2009-11) and after (2012-14) the law was implemented. These numbers were compared with New York (NY) and the United States, and between the occupati

Predicting clinical outcome and length of sick leave after surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis in Sweden: a multi-register evaluation.

PURPOSE: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) can be surgically treated, with variable outcome. Studies have linked socioeconomic factors to outcome, but no nation-wide studies have been performed. This register-based study, including all patients surgically treated for LSS during 2008-2012 in Sweden, aimed to determine predictive factors for the outcome of surgery. METHODS: Clinical and socioeconomic factors with impact on outcome in LSS surgery were identified in several high-coverage registers, e.g., the national quality registry for spine surgery (Swespine, FU-rate 70-90%). Multivariate regressio

Aberrations in medically certified sick leave and primary healthcare consultations in Norway in 2023 compared to pre-COVID-19-pandemic trends.

BACKGROUND: Since 2022, Norway has employed a vaccine-only COVID-19 strategy. Primary healthcare in Norway uses International Classification of Primary Care version 2 (ICPC-2) codes. This study aims to systematically compare medically certified sick leave and primary healthcare consultations in 2023 with the pre-pandemic 2010-2019 trends, and subsequently estimate the magnitude of these changes. METHODS: For the respective outcomes of (A) working person-years lost to medically certified sick leave (WYLSL) and (B) number of primary healthcare consultations, 556 and 85 ICPC-2 code combinations

Smoking and Long-Term Sick Leave in a Japanese Working Population: Findings of the Japan Epidemiology Collaboration on Occupational Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have investigated the association between tobacco smoking and sick leave (SL) in Japan. METHODS: We followed 70 896 workers aged 20-59 years (60 133 males, 10 763 females) between April 2012 and March 2017. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to investigate the associations between smoking (smoking status and intensity) and long-term SL (ie, SL lasting ≥30 consecutive days). Cause-specific analyses were also conducted. RESULTS: A total of 1777 people took long-term SL during a follow-up of 307 749 person years. Compared with never-smokers, current smokers were a

Reduced sick leave in multiple sclerosis after one year of natalizumab treatment. A prospective ad hoc analysis of the TYNERGY trial.

BACKGROUND: In a retrospective study, we have previously shown that work ability was improved after the initiation of natalizumab treatment in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). In another prospective trial (TYNERGY) the effect on MS-related fatigue was evaluated after 12 months of treatment with natalizumab. A comprehensive Capacity for Work Questionnaire (CWQ) was used to collect data regarding number of working hours and sickness absence. The predefined intention-to-treat analysis regarding work ability did not, however, show significant results. OBJECTIVES: The objective of th
