Neural correlates of face detection.

Although face detection likely played an essential adaptive role in our evolutionary past and in contemporary social interactions, there have been few rigorous studies investigating its neural correlates. MJH, a prosopagnosic with bilateral lesions to the ventral temporal-occipital cortices encompassing the posterior face areas (fusiform and occipital face areas), expresses no subjective difficulty in face detection, suggesting that these posterior face areas do not mediate face detection exclusively. Despite his normal contrast sensitivity and visual acuity in foveal vision, the present study

An Intelligent LLM-Based Mental Coping Detection Framework.

Social media-based Mental Health (MH) informatics often focuses on disorder detection, overlooking psychological aspects like coping mechanisms and stressors. Furthermore, user-generated texts, although contains MH signals at scale, lack clinical validation. This paper presents a two-stage framework for mental coping detection that combines a coping strategy classifier and a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system. The coping classifier identifies coping strategies from user text, while the RAG generates responses grounded in expert-validated knowledge bases and the coping labels. A pilot

Sensitivity and response bias in non-clinical social anxiety to detect changes in facial expressions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous research has not established a consensus on the ability of higher socially anxious individuals to detect facial expressions. The purpose of this study was to examine this issue using Signal Detection Theory (SDT) as a framework. METHODS: Participants with higher levels of social anxiety (HSA) and lower levels of social anxiety (LSA) were instructed to complete a change-detection task. Prototypical (faces with congruent eyes and mouth, i.e., happy eyes and a smiling mouth) and blended (faces with incongruent eyes and mouth, i.e., neutral eyes and a happy mou

The sunk cost effect with pigeons: some determinants of decisions about persistence.

The sunk cost effect occurs when an individual persists following an initial investment, even when persisting is costly in the long run. The current study used a laboratory model of the sunk cost effect. Two response alternatives were available: Pigeons could persist by responding on a schedule key with mixed ratio requirements, or escape by responding on a second key. In Experiment 1, mean response requirements for persistence and escape were varied across conditions. Pigeons persisted (committing the sunk cost error) when persisting increased the mean response requirement only slightly but n

Expertise and gambling: using type 2 signal detection theory to investigate differences between regular gamblers and nongamblers.

This paper presents an experimental investigation into how individuals make decisions under uncertainty when faced with different payout structures in the context of gambling. Type 2 signal detection theory was utilized to compare sensitivity to bias manipulations between regular nonproblem gamblers and nongamblers in a novel probability-based gambling task. The results indicated that both regular gamblers and nongamblers responded to the changes of rewards for correct responses (Experiment 1) and penalties for errors (Experiment 2) in setting their gambling criteria, but that regular gamblers

Infants' sensitivity to broadband noise.

Infants have higher pure-tone thresholds than adults. One explanation is that infants do not adopt the frequency-selective listening strategy that adults use when detecting tones. In contrast to other models of infants' immature sensitivity, the listening strategy account predicts that infants will be more sensitive to broadband sounds, relative to adults. Infants 7-9 months old were tested in two experiments to examine their sensitivity to broadband noise. Unmasked and masked thresholds for a 1000-Hz tone and for broadband noise were estimated adaptively for infants and adults using an observ

LED Railway Signal Detection Rather Than Recognition is Affected by Both Refractive and Non-refractive Blur.

PURPOSE: Previous research has reported a significant effect of refractive defocus on the correct identification of red signals. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of both refractive defocus and non-refractive defocus (using Bangerter filters) on the perception of rail signals using the Railway LED Lantern Test (RLLT). The RLLT is the simulated practical test nominated in the Australian National Standard for Health Assessment of Railway Safety Workers. METHOD: Participants were 19-59 years old, and the best corrected visual acuity (BVCA) was required to be no worse than 6

Cognitive load and individual differences as drivers of health-related misinformation: A signal detection approach.

The global spread of health-related misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to understand the psychological mechanisms that make individuals susceptible to health-related misinformation. This study examined the impact of cognitive load and individual differences on susceptibility to COVID-19 misinformation using a Signal Detection Theory framework. A sample of 634 university students evaluated true and false COVID-19 headlines under working memory load and no-load conditions, while also completing standardized assessments of cognitive reflection, epistemically unwa

Test-retest reliability of quantitative sensory testing for mechanical somatosensory and pain modulation assessment of masticatory structures.

Assessing the reliability of medical measurements is a crucial step towards the elaboration of an applicable clinical instrument. There are few studies that evaluate the reliability of somatosensory assessment and pain modulation of masticatory structures. This study estimated the test-retest reliability, that is over time, of the mechanical somatosensory assessment of anterior temporalis, masseter and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the conditioned pain modulation (CPM) using the anterior temporalis as the test site. Twenty healthy women were evaluated in two sessions (1 week apart) by the

Comodulation Enhances Signal Detection via Priming of Auditory Cortical Circuits.

UNLABELLED: Acoustic environments are composed of complex overlapping sounds that the auditory system is required to segregate into discrete perceptual objects. The functions of distinct auditory processing stations in this challenging task are poorly understood. Here we show a direct role for mouse auditory cortex in detection and segregation of acoustic information. We measured the sensitivity of auditory cortical neurons to brief tones embedded in masking noise. By altering spectrotemporal characteristics of the masker, we reveal that sensitivity to pure tone stimuli is strongly enhanced in

Visual localization in dyslexia.

Individuals with specific reading disability (SRD) may exhibit visual psychophysical abnormalities that include prolonged visual persistence, decreased luminance contrast sensitivity, lower flicker fusion thresholds, abnormal metacontrast masking, and lower motion detection sensitivity. These abnormalities could result from impairment of the magnocellular division of the visual afferent pathway to the cortex. The authors predicted that an impairment of this pathway would also cause abnormalities in ability to localize visual stimuli. This prediction was tested in 2 experiments. Results of both

Referential delusions of communication and reality discrimination deficits in psychosis.

BACKGROUND: There appear to be two kinds of delusion of reference, which vary independently: delusions of observation and delusions of communication. It has been suggested that delusions of communication might derive from an impairment in reality discrimination, though the impairment would be centred on non-verbal channels in delusions of communication as opposed to verbal channels in auditory hallucinations. METHOD: Patients (N=64) with acute psychotic symptoms were recruited according to a 2 x 2 design: presence versus absence of delusions of communication crossed with presence versus absen

Developmental hearing loss impedes auditory task learning and performance in gerbils.

The consequences of developmental hearing loss have been reported to include both sensory and cognitive deficits. To investigate these issues in a non-human model, auditory learning and asymptotic psychometric performance were compared between normal hearing (NH) adult gerbils and those reared with conductive hearing loss (CHL). At postnatal day 10, before ear canal opening, gerbil pups underwent bilateral malleus removal to induce a permanent CHL. Both CHL and control animals were trained to approach a water spout upon presentation of a target (Go stimuli), and withhold for foils (Nogo stimul

Binaural masking level difference in skilled reading children and children with dyslexia.

BACKGROUND: Combining stimuli arriving at both ears makes it possible to locate sounds in the environment and to better detect signals or understand speech in noise when the sound sources are separated spatially. The sensitivity of the binaural system to interaural differences in time and amplitude can be investigated by means of the binaural masking level difference (BMLD). The age at which the BMLD reaches adult levels appears to depend partly upon masker bandwidth. Less is known about the effect of masker's level on the development of BMLD in children. In the present study we assessed the e

Cortical Local Field Potential Power Is Associated with Behavioral Detection of Near-threshold Stimuli in the Rat Whisker System: Dissociation between Orbitofrontal and Somatosensory Cortices.

There is growing evidence that ongoing brain oscillations may represent a key regulator of attentional processes and as such may contribute to behavioral performance in psychophysical tasks. OFC appears to be involved in the top-down modulation of sensory processing; however, the specific contribution of ongoing OFC oscillations to perception has not been characterized. Here we used the rat whiskers as a model system to further characterize the relationship between cortical state and tactile detection. Head-fixed rats were trained to report the presence of a vibrotactile stimulus (frequency =

Signal-to-noise ratio of chemosensory event-related potentials.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the influence of the number of stimuli on signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of CSERP. METHODS: CSERP from 20 normosmic subjects were obtained in response to stimulation with two olfactory (H(2)S and PEA) and a trigeminal (CO(2)) stimulant. For each of these odors, 160 stimuli were delivered into the right nostril (duration 200ms, mean ISI 30s) using a constant-flow, air-dilution olfactometer. For each EEG recording site (Fz, Cz, Pz, C3, C4), peak-to-peak amplitude N1P2 and noise amplitude levels were determined. Subsequently, S/N ratios were calculated. RESULTS: The S/N

Experimental studies of ongoing conscious experience.

A research programme designed to find ways of applying a variety of methods in psychological science to studying the seemingly ephemeral phenomena of the human stream of consciousness and its manifestations in daydreams, interior monologues, imagery and related private experiences is described. Approaches include psychometric studies to establish normative information on daydreaming and experimental studies using signal-detection paradigms to capture the ongoing stream of thought. Recent experiments involve thought-sampling methods for identifying the determinants of the content of the stream

Sustained attention deficit in bipolar disorder is not a working memory impairment in disguise.

Euthymic patients with bipolar disorder have been reported to show persistent deficits in sustained attention. However, the sustained attention task which was used also placed demands on working memory. Bipolar disorder patients in the euthymic state were therefore compared with healthy controls on two measures of sustained attention with and without a working memory component. Signal detection methodology was applied to the results. Euthymic patients with bipolar disorder were particularly impaired at detecting targets in the sustained attention task without a working memory component. This d

Maturation of auditory stream segregation in school-age children: Effects of signal repetition and frequency predictability.

In multi-source auditory environments, effective listening requires segregation and selective attention to sound streams of interest. School-age children often perform worse than adults under these conditions, but the component skills responsible for child-adult differences are poorly understood. This study measured masked detection thresholds for three groups of children (5-7, 8-10, and 11-13 yrs) and adults, all with normal hearing. The masker was a continuous stream of four-tone bursts, with the frequencies of those four tones randomized for each burst. The signal was a single tone added to

Spectral and level effects in auditory signal enhancement.

Auditory enhancement refers generally to the increased perceptual salience of a spectral region when that region is preceded by its spectral complement, e.g., reinserting a missing component in a harmonic complex makes that component "pop out." One manifestation of enhancement is the increased detectability of a signal in certain spectro-temporal configurations. In the present experiments, detection thresholds were measured for a 2-kHz signal that was masked by an inharmonic complex with a spectral notch centered at 2-kHz. When the masker was preceded by a precursor/adaptor with a spectral gap
