Hypersensitivity pneumonitis and exposure to zirconium silicate in a young ceramic tile worker.

We describe a nonsmoking ceramic tile worker 25 yr of age who developed a worsening dry cough and dyspnea after 3.5 yr as a sorter and glazer of tiles. Open lung biopsy revealed an intense granulomatous interstitial pneumonia with mild fibrosis, compatible with hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and numerous very small birefringent crystals around the terminal airways and occasionally in granulomas. Pulmonary particle analysis revealed an inhaled dust burden nearly 100-fold the normal background level, mainly consisting of clay minerals and zirconium silicate. The patient had no history or clinical

Bis(triphenyl-λ5-phosphanylidene)ammonium fluoride: a reactive fluoride source to access the hypervalent silicates [Me(n)SiF(5-n)]- (n = 0-3).

A new synthesis of bis(triphenyl-λ(5)-phosphanylidene)ammonium fluoride ((Ph3PNPPh3)F, abbreviated as (PNP)F), is described. The title compound has been fully characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, vibrational spectroscopy, elemental analysis and single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction for the first time. In the solid state (PNP)F exists as a covalent molecular compound, in which the fluoride ion is asymmetrically bonded to the two phosphorus atoms of the [PNP](+) cation. The phosphorus-fluorine bond with 181.98(13) pm is surprisingly long and the longest P-F bond in any phosphora

In vitro evaluation of water-insoluble silicates and polyvinylpyrrolidone-vinyl acetate as oral carriers for amorphous ritonavir: dissolution enhancement and the role of phosphatidylcholine.

Porous silicates have been investigated as drug carriers to promote the solubility and in vitro dissolution of poorly water-soluble drugs, owing to their potential to adsorb drug molecules in the amorphous form within their structural cavities. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of bentonite (BT), Aeroperl 300 Pharma (AP), and Florite PS-200 (FR) as water-insoluble silicate drug carriers, and the polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone-vinyl acetate (PVPVA) in improving the dissolution of ritonavir (RTV). The effect of phosphatidylcholine (PC) as a water-insoluble excipient on drug dissolution w

Siliceous non-diatom microorganisms as complementary indicators in forensic investigations of drowning deaths.

The diatom test remains one of the most widely applied laboratory methods in the post-mortem diagnosis of drowning. However, its value may be limited in environments with low diatom abundance or in atypical aquatic settings. We surveyed the forensic relevance of additional siliceous, non-diatom microorganisms (chrysophyte cysts and scales, freshwater sponge spicules, ebridians, and phytoliths) detectable using standard diatom preparation techniques based on our expertise in the fields of paleoecology and marine biology, as well as the experience gained from more than 1500 diatom analyses of su

In vitro tolerability of soluble silicic acid and tetraethyl orthosilicate in ocular epithelial cells.

Biodegradable silica microparticles (SiMPs) are a promising carrier matrix for controlled ocular drug delivery. In tissues, SiMPs degrade into silicic acid (SiA), a soluble inorganic weak acid. This study evaluated the in vitro toxicity and tolerability of SiA and SiMPs' precursor, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), in human corneal epithelial cells (HCE-2) and retinal pigment epithelial cells (ARPE-19). Cells were exposed to serial dilutions of SiA and TEOS. Cell viability was assessed after 24, 48, and 72 h using the alamarBlue assay, while membrane integrity was analyzed through LDH release.

Thermal desorption technique to speciate mercury in carbonate, silicate, and organic-rich soils.

Thermal desorption is a well-assessed technique to speciate mercury (Hg) in soils and sediments. However, the effects related to the different matrices are still not properly assessed. In this study, thermal desorption was applied to Hg-free calcite mixed with Hg standard and soils rich in carbonate and silicate minerals, as well as organic matter. Hg0, HgCl2, HgO, α-HgS, β-HgS and organo-mercuric compounds were recognized, pointing out that the soil matrix operates notable differences in terms of breakdown temperatures of the Hg-compounds and suggesting that the mineralogical composition of s

Unusual Surface Coagulation Activation Patterns of Crystalline and Amorphous Silicate-Based Biominerals.

Activation of coagulation cascades, especially FX and prothrombin, prevents blood loss and reduces mortality from hemorrhagic shock. Inorganic salts are efficient but cannot stop bleeding completely in hemorrhagic events, and rebleeding carries a significant mortality risk. The coagulation mechanism of biominerals has been oversimplified in the past two decades, limiting the creation of novel hemostats. Herein, at the interface, the affinity of proteins, the protease activity, fibrinolysis, hydration shell, and dynamic microenvironment are monitored at the protein level. Proteomic analysis rev

Zinc oxide calcium silicate composite attenuates acute tramadol toxicity in mice.

BACKGROUND: Seizures are considered to be the most common symptom encountered in emergency- rushed tramadol-poisoned patients; accounting for 8% of the drug-induced seizure cases. Although, diazepam clears these seizures, the risk of central respiratory depression cannot be overlooked. Henceforth, three adsorbing composites were examined in a tramadol acute intoxication mouse model. METHODS: Calcium Silicate (Wollastonite) either non-doped or wet doped with iron oxide (3%Fe2O3) or zinc oxide (30% ZnO) were prepared. The composites' adsorption capacity for tramadol was determined in vitro. Tra

Sugarcane Bagasse Ash as an Alternative Source of Silicon Dioxide in Sodium Silicate Synthesis.

To reduce the environmental impacts from sodium silicate synthesis, a ceramic method was suggested, with sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) as the source of silicon dioxide and sodium carbonate. Although the production of sodium silicate is carried out on a large scale, it should be noted that its process requires temperatures above 1000 °C; it also requires the use of highly corrosive agents such as sodium hydroxide and chlorine gas to neutralize the remaining sodium hydroxide. In the present study, the synthesis temperatures were reduced to 800 °C with a reaction time of 3 h by pressing equimolar

Silicate ions as soluble form of bioactive ceramics alleviate aortic aneurysm and dissection.

Aortic aneurysm and dissection (AAD) are leading causes of death in the elderly. Recent studies have demonstrated that silicate ions can manipulate multiple cells, especially vascular-related cells. We demonstrated in this study that silicate ions as soluble form of bioactive ceramics effectively alleviated aortic aneurysm and dissection in both Ang II and β-BAPN induced AAD models. Different from the single targeting therapeutic drug approaches, the bioactive ceramic derived approach attributes to the effect of bioactive silicate ions on the inhibition of the AAD progression through regulatin

Nitrile regio-synthesis by Ni centers on a siliceous surface: implications in prebiotic chemistry.

By means of quantum chemistry (PBE0/def2-TZVPP; DLPNO-CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ) and small, but reliable models of Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes (POSS), an array of astrochemically-relevant catalysis products, related to prebiotic and origin of life chemistry, has been theoretically explored. In this work, the heterogeneous phase hydrocyanation reaction of an unsaturated CC bond (propene) catalyzed by a Ni center complexed to a silica surface is analyzed. Of the two possible regioisomers, the branched iso-propyl-cyanide is thermodynamically and kinetically preferred over the linear n-propyl-cya
