Non-invasive brain stimulation to improve visual perception after stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) in improving visual perception in stroke patients. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science (WoS), the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and the Cochrane Controlled Register of Trials (CENTRAL) were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the efficacy of NIBS in improving visual perception in stroke patients up to 5 September 2025. Meta-analyses, forest and funnel plots and r

It was as big as my head, I swear! Biased spider size estimation in spider phobia.

The current study tested the association between fear and perception in spider phobic individuals (n=57) within the context of a treatment outcome study. Participants completed 5 post-treatment Behavioral Approach Tasks (BATs) in which they encountered a live spider and were asked to provide spider size estimates. Consistent with predictions, results indicated that high levels of fear were associated with magnified perception of phobic stimuli. Specifically, we found a significant positive correlation between size estimates and self-reported fear while encountering spiders. Together with previ

Haptic perception of rod length when exploration is self-determined, other-determined, and self-other co-determined.

Previous research has shown that when estimating accuracy of an object property like shape, haptic perception is better when exploration is active rather than passive. To further investigate this finding, participants estimated the length of a rod under differing exploration conditions: self-determined, other-determined, and self-other co-determined. During the self-determined exploration, participants moved their end of the rod while the experimenter held the other end of the rod stationary. During the other-determined exploration, the participant held the rod while the experimenter moved the

[Body image of patients with acute paranoid schizophrenia. A follow-up study].

In the light of the heterogeneous literature on disturbances of body image in schizophrenic patients, we examined body schema, body concept and body cathexis, their changes during hospital treatment and their correlations with psychopathology in 38 patients with acute paranoid schizophrenia. The image-marking method according to Askevold, the Body Distortion Questionnaire, a visual-analogue scale on body cathexis and psychopathometric scales were applied. Body schema was also investigated in 27 healthy controls. On average, patients underestimated the size of their lower extremities, indicatin

Imperfect Size Invariance in Face Discrimination.

Multiple findings suggest that human visual perception exhibits extensive size invariance (i.e., insensitivity to retinal image size changes) for multiple object categories. This is often investigated when retinal image size changes following real-world image size changes, but viewing distance is kept constant, a situation that does not reflect daily vision where objects retain their real-world size and their image size on the retina changes as a function of viewing distance. Here, we measured face discrimination performance to parametrically growing face differences and assessed size invarian

Shifting goalposts: widening discrepancies between girls' actual and ideal bodies predict disordered eating from preadolescence to adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Little is known regarding how disordered eating (DE) relates to perceived actual body size, ideal body size, and their discrepancy. This study examined changes in perceived actual body size, ideal body size, and actual-ideal discrepancies over time, and their relationship with subsequent DE. METHODS: Participants were 759 female twins from the Minnesota Twin Family Study who reported on body image and DE every three to five years between approximately ages 11 to 29. We used multilevel modeling to examine developmental trajectories of body mass index (BMI) and Body Rating Scale Act

Hand size estimates of fibromyalgia patients are associated with clinical and experimental pain.

INTRODUCTION: Simply inspecting one's own body can reduce clinical pain and magnification of body parts can increase analgesia. Thus, body perceptions seem to play an important role for analgesia. Conversely, pain may also affect bodily perceptions. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of clinical and/or experimental pain on perceived hand size in fibromyalgia patients (FM) and healthy controls (HC). METHODS: To investigate the effects of chronic and/or acute pain on size perception we compared hand size estimates of 35 HC and 32 FM patients at baseline and during tonic mechanical pain stimuli

Specific body image pathology in acute schizophrenia.

Despite a wide phenomenological interest in body image pathology in schizophrenia, there has been little systematic empirical research. This study aimed at establishing the specificity of body image pathology in patients with schizophrenia, its changes during acute treatment, and its association with other symptom factors. Cognitive (thoughts/beliefs regarding the body--body concept), affective (body satisfaction--body cathexis) and perceptual (body size estimation--body schema) facets of body image and psychopathology were assessed in in-patients with paranoid schizophrenia (N = 60), schizoaf

Body size and shape misperception and visual adaptation: An overview of an emerging research paradigm.

Although body size and shape misperception (BSSM) is a common feature of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and muscle dysmorphia, little is known about its underlying neural mechanisms. Recently, a new approach has emerged, based on the long-established non-invasive technique of perceptual adaptation, which allows for inferences about the structure of the neural apparatus responsible for alterations in visual appearance. Here, we describe several recent experimental examples of BSSM, wherein exposure to "extreme" body stimuli causes visual aftereffects of biased perception. The implications of

Visual accommodation as a cue for size.

Accommodation micropsia is examined in the general context of ocular accommodation as a cue for object size. The nature and limits of accommodation micropsia and arguments dealing with the possible contribution of accommodation to the perception of size are reviewed. Literature on the anomalous myopias, the intermediate-resting hypothesis, and theories of ciliary muscle innervation is examined critically in so far as it bears on the accommodation-micropsia hypothesis. The anomalous myopias and evidence for the intermediate-resting hypothesis are well documented, but without a mechanism for pro

Perceived match between own and observed models' bodies: influence of face, viewpoints, and body size.

People are generally unable to accurately determine their own body measurements and to translate this knowledge to identifying a model/avatar that best represents their own body. This inability has not only been related to health problems (e.g. anorexia nervosa), but has important practical implications as well (e.g. online retail). Here we aimed to investigate the influence of three basic visual features-face presence, amount of viewpoints, and observed model size-on the perceived match between own and observed models' bodies and on attitudes towards these models. Models were real-life models

Role of eye movements in the retinal code for a size discrimination task.

Amylin infusion reduces food intake and slows body weight gain in rodents. In obese male rats, amylin (but not pair feeding) caused a preferential reduction of fat mass with protein preservation despite equal body weight loss in amylin-treated (fed ad libitum) and pair-fed rats. In the present study, the effect of prior or concurrent food restriction on the ability of amylin to cause weight loss was evaluated. Retired female breeder rats were maintained on a high-fat diet (40% fat) for 9 wk. Prior to drug treatment, rats were either fed ad libitum or food restricted for 10 days to lose 5% of t

The effects of background pattern and contrast on prey discrimination by the praying mantis Sphodromantis lineola (Burr.).

Tethered, adult female Sphodromantis lineola (Burr.) were presented with two groups of two-dimensional stimuli (i.e., 2-D lures) against various backgrounds. Lure Group 1 comprised various black rectangles in three different size arrays: each size array included a 2, 6, or 12 mm square, respectively, several 'worm' lures of a constant width (l2, edge perpendicular to the direction of movement, 3-30 mm), but varying in length (l1, parallel to the direction of movement, 6-114 mm), and several 'antiworm' lures of a constant length but varying width. Group 1 lures were presented against patterned

Canonical and retinal size in visual working memory.

Visual working memory (VWM) is key to many daily tasks, such as remembering visual information about traffic when crossing a busy street. Despite extensive research, the extent to which VWM abstracts out sensory properties not relevant to identification, such as object size, remains unclear. In three experiments, we examined how object size affects VWM, with size defined in two ways: retinal size, referring to the image's size on the screen (small or large photos), and canonical size, referring to the typical size of objects in the real world, from big (e.g., a tower) to small (e.g., an egg).

Associations Between Physical Stimulus Size and Vertical Response Locations.

This study investigates the existence and direction of associations between physical stimulus size and vertical response locations. In Experiment 1, 80 participants responded to stimulus size by pressing one of two vertically arranged keys. We orthogonally manipulated within-subjects the mappings between stimulus size and response-key locations, and between hands and response keys. The results showed a novel compatibility effect between physical stimulus size and vertical response location: Responses to the small stimulus were faster at the lower than at the higher location, whereas responses

[2 types of generalization in the evolution of the visual brain].

It has been shown that mechanism of generalization with respect to the size (shift of differentiation of the size from objects of one form to other forms) is located in dogs within the suprasylvian convolution, in cats--within the median part of the lateral suprasylvian region. After removal of these parts of the brain, other visual functions including the invariant description of the image, remain unaffected. The latter is disturbed after extirpation of the field 21; however, the shift with respect to the size does not undergo any significant changes. Therefore, two types of visual generaliza

[Features of thought formation in schizophrenic children].

The paper deals with problems related to the onthogenetic formation of a special type of the pathological cognitive activity. Such activity was expressed in disturbances of selective actualization of knowledge based on the past experience. Experimental psychological studies were performed in children from 5--14 years of age, with slowly progressive forms of schizophrenia. The data obtained indicate an acceleration (in comparison to normal children of the same age) in the development of thinking operations, demonstrate in a capability to generalize additive signs and relations. The results obta
