Autoimmune skin diseases are a group of disorders that arise due to a deregulated immune system resulting in skin tissue destruction. In the majority of these conditions, either autoreactive immune cells or the autoantibodies are generated against self-antigens of the skin. Although the etiology of these diseases remains elusive, biochemical, genetic, and environmental factors such as infectious agents, toxins damage the skin tissue leading to self-antigen generation, autoantibody attack and finally results in autoimmunity of skin. Immune dysregulation, which involves predominantly T helper 1/

Skin diseases are the third most common cause of morbidity in returning travellers and may affect 8% of travellers during travel. Classic tropical diseases account for one quarter and the remainder are cosmopolitan diseases. The majority are of infectious origin, and of these bacterial infections are the most common and lead to the most hospitalisations. The ten most frequently encountered diagnoses comprise four classical tropical infections (cutaneous larva migrans, myiasis, tungiasis and cutaneous leishmaniasis) and six nontropical diseases (bacterial skin infections, arthropod bites, aller

Obesity is a worldwide major public health problem with an alarmingly increasing prevalence over the past 2 decades. The consequences of obesity in the skin are underestimated. In this paper, we review the effect of obesity on the skin, including how increased body mass index affects skin physiology, skin barrier, collagen structure, and wound healing. Obesity also affects sebaceous and sweat glands and causes circulatory and lymphatic changes. Common skin manifestations related to obesity include acanthosis nigricans, acrochordons, keratosis pilaris, striae distensae, cellulite, and plantar h

Athletic activity may cause or aggravate skin disorders, which in turn may diminish athletic performance. Since many sporting activities necessitate prolonged exposure to the sun, athletes must avoid painful sunburn which will adversely affect their performance. Drugs and chemicals also may cause photoallergic and/or phototoxic reactions, including polymorphous light eruption and athletes should thus avoid photosensitising drugs and chemicals. The effects of chronic ultraviolet exposure include ageing, pigmentation and skin cancers. The most effective protection against excessive exposure to s

Hospital employees are often exposed to infectious diseases, both within and outside of the hospital. Susceptible personnel are at risk of acquiring infection and are a possible source of infection for patients, other employees and members of their households. In recent years epidemics in hospitals due to rubella, pertussis, hepatitis B and Legionnaires' disease have included infection transmitted to and from personnel. A comprehensive plan for management of hospital personnel exposed to communicable diseases should include the following: (1) protocols for the management of each of the common

Epidermal parasitic skin diseases (EPSD) are a heterogeneous category of infectious diseases in which parasite-host interactions are confined to the upper layer of the skin. The six major EPSD are scabies, pediculosis (capitis, corporis and pubis), tungiasis and hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans. We summarize the current knowledge on EPSD and show that these diseases are widespread, polyparasitism is common, and significant primary and secondary morbidity occurs. We show that poverty favours the presence of animal reservoirs, ensures ongoing transmission, facilitates atypical methods of

The primary care provider will commonly see skin and soft tissue infections in the outpatient setting. Skin and soft tissue infections range from the uncomplicated impetigo to the potentially lethal necrotizing fasciitis. This article reviews these infections based on their underlying etiology: bacterial, fungal, and viral causes. This article discusses the etiology, presentation, evaluation, and management of impetigo, bullous impetigo, erysipelas, cellulitis, periorbital cellulitis, orbital cellulitis, folliculitis, furuncles, carbuncles, abscess, necrotizing fasciitis, sporotrichosis, tinea

Increased migration, the omnipresent desire to travel, climate change and a globally more mobile population enhance the risk of spreading infectious, tropical pathogens across international borders. In addition to diarrhea and fever, skin diseases present one of the most common reasons for a medical consultation upon return among travelers. These diseases are often caused by parasites. Detailed data on infectious travel diseases is scarce. However, demographic, endemic and travel-related information represent the basic requirements for physicians to choose appropriate diagnostics and adequate

Children with HIV infection may develop a wide variety of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the skin. These disorders are often more severe and more difficult to treat than in the healthy child. In some cases, disorders of the skin or mucous membranes may provide an early clue to the presence of pediatric HIV infection.

Progress in medical science has given a new reading to the claim that the skin could be a mirror of the pathological changes found in the internal organs. The concept that we previously promoted is furthered in this issue; namely that the greatest part of skin diseases are systemic ones. In this issue we focus on another group of diseases with systemic involvement and skin manifestations. We review such inflammatory conditions as lichen planus, autoinflammatory syndromes, and pyoderma gangrenosum focusing on their systemic involvement. We have not missed such classic examples of systemic invol

The term rupioid has been used to describe well-demarcated, cone-shaped plaques with thick, dark, lamellate, and adherent crusts on the skin that somewhat resemble oyster or limpet shells. We present a case of rupioid psoriasis that was treated with methotrexate, topical steroids, and intralesional steroid injections. Rupioid manifestations have been clinically observed in a variety of disease settings, including rupioid psoriasis, reactive arthritis, disseminated histoplasmosis, keratotic scabies, secondary syphilis, and photosensitive skin lesions in association with aminoaciduria. Skin problems are common in returning travellers, despite the fact that vaccination, insect repellent techniques, adequate clothing and footwear are all ways to prevent skin disease. When travelling to unusual areas, the traveller can still expect to pick up diseases that are common across the world, such as lice, scabies, and staphylococcal or streptococcal infections. What can differ are the different arthropods and the diseases they can spread. Given the plethora of dermatoses in returning travellers, a methodological approach is necessary. We attempted such an approach by creating a practi

INTRODUCTION: Organ transplanted patients exhibit cutaneous lesions caused by immunosuppressive treatment and/or immunosuppression itself. Several selected studies concerning kidney transplants have been reported, but few concerning liver transplants. We report a retrospective study of skin diseases after liver transplantation.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: This study was carried out on liver transplanted patients at the University hospital in Besançon since 1986. Eighty six patients were examined between January 1997 and May 1998. Standardized data obtained at the clinical examination and from past h
