Sleep and wakefulness after treatment for craniopharyngioma in childhood; influence on the quality and maturation of sleep.

Craniopharyngiomas are situated in immediate vicinity of sleep regulating structures in the basal forebrain area, and the tumor and its treatment might influence the regulation of sleep and wakefulness. In 10 patients treated for craniopharyngioma nighttime sleep quality and daytime vigilance were examined with polygraphic sleep records and multiple sleep latency tests (MSLT). Two girls and 8 boys, 7.1-22.9 years of age, were studied after a follow-up time of 1.5-16.1 years postoperatively. The results were compared to those of 18 normal children. The regulation of the ultradian sleep rhythm w

Chronotype is Associated with Sleep Quality in Older Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Disrupted sleep is common in individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and may be a marker for AD risk. The timing of sleep or chronotype affects sleep-wake activity and is also associated with AD, but little is known about links between sleep and chronotype in older adults. In this study, we tested if different measures of sleep and chronotype are associated among older adults even after adjusting for multiple potentially confounding variables. METHODS: Participants (N=243) with a mean age of 74 underwent standardized cognitive assessments, measurement of CSF AD biomarkers, and

The Efficacy of Capsaicin on Sleep Quality and Fatigue in Fibromyalgia.

Capsaicin is a topical pain reliever that has been evaluated by randomized controlled trials (RCTs) as a potential adjunctive therapy for treating unmitigated fibromyalgia. Therefore, a review of English articles using PubMed and Embase was conducted from January 1, 1990 to February 9, 2022 in order to evaluate the utility of capsaicin for improvement of sleep quality and fatigue associated with fibromyalgia. The search terms included: "fibromyalgia" and "capsaicin". Articles included were RCTs evaluating capsaicin in adult patients with fibromyalgia. Two studies met criteria and included 175

Influence of Parathyroidectomy on Sleep Quality in Primary Hyperparathyroidism.

We investigated the impact of parathyroidectomy on sleep quality in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT). Thirty consecutive patients with pHPT were enrolled in the study within 1 year. pHPT was diagnosed by typical symptoms accompanied by an elevated level of parathormone. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used for the evaluation of sleep 1 day before and 6 months after parathyroidectomy. The mean total PSQI score was elevated to 6.8 ± 0.6 points before surgery, which was in the pathological cut-off of greater than ≥5, indicating impaired sleep quality. After parathyro

The Association of Sleep Duration and Quality with CKD Progression.

Evidence suggests that sleep disorders are common in individuals with CKD, but the influence of sleep duration and quality on CKD progression is unknown. We examined the association of habitual sleep duration and quality with CKD progression in 431 Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) Study participants, of whom 48% were women and 50% had diabetes (mean age of 60 years old, mean eGFR =38 ml/min per 1.73 m2, and median urine protein-to-creatinine ratio [UPCR] =0.20 g/g). We assessed sleep duration and quality by 5-7 days of wrist actigraphy and self-report. Primary outcomes were incident E

Treatment adherence and quality of sleep in schizophrenia outpatients.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with schizophrenia (SZ) often present sleep complaints, and patients with sleep disturbances are at a greater risk for symptom worsening after antipsychotic discontinuation. Long-term adherence to antipsychotic treatment remains a challenge for clinicians, and the relationship between quality of sleep and treatment adherence in SZ outpatients has been poorly studied. METHODS: In this cross-sectional, non-interventional study, 811 adult outpatients with a diagnosis of SZ were divided into two groups according to the presence (or absence) of sleep disturbances, and assessed

Contribution of routine to sleep quality in community elderly.

INTRODUCTION: Among the common problems related to aging is sleep quality; over half of older adults suffer from symptoms of insomnia. Age-related changes in circadian sleep/wake regulation constitute a major underlying factor. Constant and organized lifestyle may moderate the effects of circadian rhythm changes on sleep. Preliminary findings have linked daily regularity to sleep quality among healthy adults and in patients with Parkinson disease. The current study investigated the relationships between daily routines and sleep quality among community dwelling elderly. METHODS: Ninety-six Isr

[Quality of life in patients with obstructive sleep apnea].

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA) is a condition affecting up to 5% of the population, in which episodes of upper airway obstruction lead to temporary cessation of airflow, disturbed sleep architecture and daily somnolence. The health consequences of OSA also include psychological and cognitive deficits, an increased risk of systemic and pulmonary hypertension, coronary disease, bradyarrhythmias and motor vehicle accidents. Symptoms and complications of OSA lead to a significant decrease of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of affected patients. We review the current literature on HR

Nocturia, nocturnal polyuria, and sleep quality in the elderly.

Nocturia is a common symptom in the elderly, which profoundly influences general health and quality of life. One consequence of nocturia is sleep deterioration, with increased daytime sleepiness and loss of energy and activity. Accidents, e.g., fall injuries, are increased both at night and in the daytime in elderly persons with nocturia. Nocturia is caused by nocturnal polyuria, a reduced bladder capacity, or a combination of the two. Nocturnal polyuria can be caused by numerous diseases, such as diabetes insipidus, diabetes mellitus, congestive heart failure, and sleep apnoea. In the nocturn

[Nutrition in improving sleep quality and fighting insomnia].

Sleep is essential for a wide range of physiological and mental functions, but it is increasingly disturbed, which is associated with short- and long-term health damage. There are many factors involved in the deterioration of sleep quality, but from a nutritional point of view, an intake of tryptophan is useful in increasing serotonin and melatonin, but because of their competition with long-chain neutral amino acids to cross the blood-brain barrier, some proteins such as milk and eggs with high tryptophan/long-chain neutral amino acids are more useful. The adequate supply of carbohydrates and
