Sleep stage classification is a necessary step for diagnosing sleep disorders. Generally, experts use traditional methods based on every 30 seconds (s) of the biological signals, such as electrooculograms (EOGs), electrocardiograms (ECGs), electromyograms (EMGs), and electroencephalograms (EEGs), to classify sleep stages. Recently, various state-of-the-art approaches based on a deep learning model have been demonstrated to have efficient and accurate outcomes in sleep stage classification. In this paper, a novel deep convolutional neural network (CNN) combined with a long short-time memory (LS

The aim of this study is to propose a high-accuracy and high-efficiency sleep staging algorithm using single-channel electroencephalograms (EEGs). The process consists four parts: signal preprocessing, feature extraction, feature selection, and classification algorithms. In the preconditioning of EEG, wavelet function and IIR filter are used for noise reduction. In feature selection, 15 feature algorithms in time domain, time-frequency domain, and nonlinearity are selected to obtain 30 feature parameters. Feature selection is very important for eliminating irrelevant and redundant features. Fe

BACKGROUND: The durations of untreated stage 1 (early stage, haemo-lymphatic) and stage 2 (late stage, meningo-encephalitic) human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) due to Trypanosoma brucei gambiense are poorly quantified, but key to predicting the impact of screening on transmission. Here, we outline a method to estimate these parameters.
METHODS: We first model the duration of stage 1 through survival analysis of untreated serological suspects detected during Médecins Sans Frontières interventions in Uganda and Sudan. We then deduce the duration of stage 2 based on the stage 1 to

Excessive fragmentary myoclonus during sleep consists of high amounts of brief twitch-like movements occurring asynchronously and asymmetrically in different body areas and has been reported to occur in association with a number of sleep disorders. It was analyzed using a new technique of quantification, the fragmentary myoclonus index (FMI). The FMI exhibited high rates in all stages of sleep but with a somewhat lower frequency in slow wave sleep explaining, as well, a significantly lower rate in the first hour after onset compared to later hours. There was no evidence for greater sleep fragm

We examined the influence of apnea type and sleep stage on the severity of apnea-induced desaturations in 32 patients with a sleep apnea syndrome. The individual postapneic desaturations were evaluated by a desaturation curve; this curve was built by plotting the fall in SaO2 after an apnea against this apnea's length for each apneic event during the whole night recording. We considered only apneas where the preapneic SaO2 was greater than 90% and the lowest SaO2 value after the apnea was equal to or greater than 60% (limit of linearity of our oximeter). From the desaturation curve, we determi

Sleep monitoring at 3 months post term of clinically normal term infants, pre-term infants with no demonstrable pathologic clinical signs, and pre-term and term infants with a history of metabolic disorders show that these infants have EEG sleep stages resembling those seen in adults, as well as the adult pattern of sleep stage organization. The presence of NREM stage organization and stage sequencing suggest that sleep regulatory mechanisms are approaching a level of functional maturity in the human infant at 3 months post term. There is a significant relationship between sleep staging at 3 m

Traditionally used for measuring heart rate and oxygen saturation, photoplethysmography (PPG) has emerged as a promising non-invasive alternative for diagnosing sleep related disorders. Unlike the gold-standard polysomnography (PSG) performed in-lab at the hospital, PPG offers a more scalable and cost-effective solution. Recent advancements in deep learning have significantly enhanced the precision of these methods for sleep stage inference. This study extends the evaluation of a PPG-based deep learning model to a clinical cohort of 134 patients with suspected sleep apnea (SA). These participa

Sleep apnea is negatively associated with N3 sleep in children. However, the association between tinnitus and sleep N3 stage was still inconclusive. We aimed to clarify the relationship between sleep apnea, chronic tinnitus, and sleep N3 stage in adults. Clinical and overnight polysomnography data of 2847 adults were collected retrospectively. Univariate and multivariate linear regression was used to test the impacts of sleep apnea indices and chronic tinnitus on the percentage of sleep N3 stage in all adults. Univariate linear regression analysis showed that sleep apnea indices, chronic tinni

We present two novel entropy-based measures that quantify sleep-stage transition dynamics (sleep structure) from polysomnogram derived hypnograms: Walsh spectral entropy (WSE) and Haar spectral entropy (HSE). These measures quantify patterns of temporal regularity of a categorical time series without requiring numerical encoding (scaling) of the (categorical) sleep stages. Additionally, we show that conditional entropy (CE) is well suited for quantifying predictability of the hypnogram. The relationship of those measures with traditional sleep fragmentation indices (arousal index, total sleep

OBJECTIVE: In a previous study, we found oscillations in the autonomic nervous system activity--as estimated by spectral analysis of R-R intervals--strongly linked to the non-rapid-eye movement (NREM)--REM sleep cycles, with low sympathetic activity during NREM sleep and predominant sympathetic activity during REM sleep. In the present study we established the 5-min nighttime profiles in various measures of heart rate variability (HRV) in one patient with primary aldosteronism before and after successful surgery of Conn adenoma.
METHODS: One patient (female, 36 years old) with primary aldoste

This study investigated neurophysiological differences between individuals with and without insomnia across sleep stages and sleep discrepancy conditions using electroencephalography (EEG). EEG band powers (Delta, Beta) and entropy metrics (Sample Entropy and Multiscale Sample Entropy) were analyzed from each epoch of overnight polysomnography in 64 participants. Linear mixed-effects modeling was used to examine the influence of insomnia status, sleep stage, and electrode location on these EEG metrics. Results indicated that the EEG metrics were strongly correlated with physiological sleep sta

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Although various wearable electroencephalography devices have been developed, performance evaluation of the devices and their associated automated sleep stage classification models is mostly limited to healthy participants. A major barrier for applying automated wearable electroencephalography sleep staging in clinical populations is the need for large-scale data for model training. We therefore investigated transfer learning as a strategy to overcome limited data availability and optimize automated single-channel electroencephalography sleep staging in people with sleep diso

BACKGROUND: The minimum narcolepsy criteria "mean sleep latency (MSL) ≤8 min and ≥2 sleep onset rapid eye movement (REM) periods (SOREMPs) on polysomnography (PSG) and the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT)," according to The International Classification of Sleep Disorders, Third Edition (ICSD-3), are not specific to narcolepsy. Recently, the characteristic sleep stage sequences preceding SOREMPs in narcolepsy have received attention, but their diagnostic utility remains unclear.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed PSG/MSLT records and chart data for 102 Japanese patients with hypersomnia an

KEY POINTS: In most patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), there is a spontaneous resolution of the breathing disorders during slow wave sleep (SWS) for yet unknown reasons related to non-anatomical factors. Some recently identified forms of neural memory specific of upper airway muscles may play a role in this phenomenon. In the present study, we show for the first time that a form of memory of the genioglossus (tongue) muscle is greatly enhanced during SWS compared to non-rapid eye movement stage 2 sleep. The present study represents a step forward in understanding the mechanisms resp

The article is devoted to analysis of research brain biopotential field structure during different stages of natural night sleep in adults. The special attention is given to distinctions of the spatial organization of EEG interregional relations in the left and right hemispheres which are shown most strongly in the II and III sleep stages. The special role of frontal cortical areas in reorganization of brain system activity during falling asleep is highlighted. Essential strengthening of hemispherical interaction of cortex biopotentials fluctuations during falling asleep--a stage of I(B)--alon

The interpretation of data from continuous monitoring of intracranial pressure (ICP) in patients with suspected normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is the subject of controversy. Despite the fact that overnight ICP monitoring is widely used for the diagnosis of NPH, normative criteria are poorly defined. The present study demonstrates that there is a relationship between the relative frequency, the absolute amplitude, the wavelength and the morphology of B-waves and different sleep stages. Intraventricular intracranial pressure was recorded continuously overnight in 16 patients with suspected

INTRODUCTION: Alpha-synucleinopathies (ASs), including Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy and dementia with Lewy bodies, are characterised by autonomic dysfunction that may predispose to cardiovascular events and sudden death. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a non-invasive marker of autonomic regulation, yet its modulation across sleep stages in ASs remains unclear.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 25 patients with ASs and 35 age-matched controls who underwent overnight polysomnography between 2020 and 2023. 5 min ECG segments from wakefulness, non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and

INTRODUCTION: Chagas disease (CD) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in Latin America. Chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy (CCC) is the most severe clinical form. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a highly prevalent sleep-related breathing disorder, is associated with adverse cardiovascular and metabolic outcomes, yet its clinical relevance in CD remains poorly understood. This study aimed to examine the association between the stages of CCC with the OSA risk and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in patients with CD.

Caffeine is the world's most popular stimulant and is known to disrupt sleep. Administration of caffeine can therefore be used in healthy volunteers to mimic the effects of insomnia and thus to test the hypnotic effects of medication. This study assessed the effects of caffeine on sleep architecture and electroencephalography (EEG) spectrum alone and in combination with two different sleep-promoting medications. Home polysomnography was performed in 12 healthy male volunteers in a double-blind study whereby subjects received placebo, caffeine (150 mg), caffeine plus zolpidem (10 mg) and caffei
