INTRODUCTION: Health literacy describes the cognitive and social skills that individuals use to access, understand and act on health information. Health literacy interventions typically take the 'universal precautions approach' where all consumers are presented with simplified materials. Although this approach can improve knowledge and comprehension, its impact on complex behaviours is less clear. Systematic reviews also suggest that health literacy interventions underuse volitional strategies (such as planning) that play an important role in behaviour change. A recent study found volitional s

Oral physiology and oral processing behaviors influence bolus formation and potentially eating rate. However, the role of oral physiology on intake among adults with a healthy dentition remains unclear. Here, we examined associations between physiological measures (salivary flow rate and masticatory performance), oral processing behaviors (bolus formation and eating rate), and pretzel intake. In a single laboratory session, adults (n = 68, 66% women) completed assessments of salivary flow rate (parafilm), masticatory performance (gum mixing task), and bolus formation (mini-pretzels). Bolus for

Lifestyle-related diseases associated with obesity remain a major public health concern in Japan, in which eating and drinking habits play a critical role. Energy-free carbonated water has been suggested to promote sensations of fullness and may serve as a low-caloric alternative to caloric foods or alcoholic beverages; however, evidence regarding its sustained effects on habitual behaviors and objective health indices is limited. In this randomized, open-label, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial, 46 healthy Japanese adults (aged 20-64 years; body mass index BMI, kg/m², 23.0-<30.0) were

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Cystic fibrosis (CF)-related diabetes (CFRD), a common comorbidity in CF, is often preceded and characterized with elevated postprandial glycemic (PPG) excursions. In the general population, the consumption of a pre-meal protein snack and/or physical activity (PA) hinder the elevation of PPG levels. Our objective is to evaluate the effect of a pre-meal snack and/or post-meal PA on PPG excursions in CF.
METHODS: This is a double-blinded randomized controlled crossover interventional study in 14 adults with CF, with 4 interventions: placebo pre-meal snack + no PA (control: CT

The shift towards a vegetarian, vegan, or flexitarian diet has increased the demand for vegetable protein and plant-based foods. The defatted cake generated during the extraction of lipids from durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum) milling by-products is a protein and fibre-containing waste, which could be upcycled as a food ingredient. This study aimed to exploit the dry-fractionated fine fraction of defatted durum wheat cake (DFFF) to formulate a vegan, clean labelled, cereal-based snack bar. The design of experiments (DoEs) for mixtures was applied to formulate a final product with

Pulse-based snack bars incorporated with probiotics were developed to provide an overview for the preparation of simple functional food concerning the antioxidant load and iron status improvement. The study focused on the application of microencapsulated probiotics in dry matrices, such as chickpeas and green lentils, in snack bars. The study aims to analyse the products' antioxidative activities, chemical and sensory properties, as well as the probiotic survivability in the dry matrices. The basic chemical composition showed that 100 g of product can fulfil up to 4.4% and 3.3% of the daily ir

UNLABELLED: The transition to nutritional independence makes new college students vulnerable to alterations in eating patterns, which can increase the risk of cardiometabolic disorders. The aim of the study was to examine the potential benefits of almond vs. cracker snacking in improving glucoregulatory and cardiometabolic profiles in new college students. A randomized controlled, parallel-arm, 8-week intervention of 73 college students (BMI: 18⁻41 kg/m²) with no cardiometabolic disorders was conducted. Participants were randomized into either an almond snack group (56.7 g/day; 364 kcal; n = 3

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of socio-economic status, sugar, snack consumption and vending machine use on the prevalence and severity of caries (DMF) in children.
DESIGN: An observational study was carried out in a dental practice in inner city London. Sixty children were asked to complete a questionnaire and a three day food and drink diary. After a dental examination the number of decayed (D), missing (M) or filled (F) teeth provided a DMF score. Anova and Pearsons correlations were used to analyse the data statistically.
RESULTS: Children from social groups I and II consumed sign

UNLABELLED: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effects of exercise snacks (ES) on body composition in adults. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, FMRS, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library was conducted from inception to May 2025, supplemented by backward and forward citation tracking. Eight articles comprising nine studies met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis revealed that ES interventions produced a statistically significant improvement in lean mass (MD = 0.52 kg, 95% CI: 0.13-0.91, p = 0.01). In contrast, no statistically significant effects

INTRODUCTION: Intervention studies have mainly used oral nutritional supplements (ONS) for the management of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) identified as at nutritional risk. In this 12-month randomised feasibility trial, we assessed the (1) feasibility of the recruitment, retention and provision of two interventions: ONS and between-meal snacks (snacks) and (2) the potential impact of the provision of snacks and ONS on body weight and quality of life in patients with COPD.
METHODS: Hospitalised patients with COPD, at nutritional risk, were randomised to ONS (n=19)

AIM: Insulin therapies with prandial injections offer the possibility to skip snacks or omit meals. It is unclear how many people with insulin-treated diabetes mellitus eat snacks and whether they snack for their own comfort or only on the recommendation of healthcare professionals.
METHODS: In 2004, 163 consecutive people with insulin-treated diabetes seen in a university outpatient department were interviewed regarding their diet and degree of satisfaction with their meals. Fifty-five had Type 1 diabetes [age 47 years; diabetes duration 18 years; BMI 27 kg/m(2) ; HbA1c 62 mmol/mol (7.8%)],

BACKGROUND: Night shift workers might not eat due to their busy schedules during the night shift. However, food may not only satisfy hunger, but also affect performance and errors. The aim of this study was to clarify the effect of a snack on performance and errors during 2-day, 16-h, simulated night shifts.
METHODS: A randomized, repeated-measure, crossover study was performed to investigate subjective and cognitive performance in 15 healthy female adults (mean age, 21.7 years) after they consumed a snack (352 kcal) during a simulated night shift (16:00 to 09:00) from October to November 201
