The light yellow neuropeptidergic cell system of the basommatophoran snail Lymnaea stagnalis is homologous to the R3-R14 system of the opisthobranch Aplysia californica, and produces three different neuropeptides. Systems homologous to the light yellow cells of Lymnaea stagnalis have been investigated morphologically in two Basommatophora (Lymnaea ovata, Bulinus truncatus) and three Stylommatophora (Helix aspersa, Cepaea nemoralis, Deroceras reticulatum). To this end, an antibody to synthetic light-yellow-cell peptide-II and oligonucleotides to mRNAs encoding parts of peptide-I and peptide-III

There is a need for current and more detailed information on the population genetic structure of Biomphalaria snails in East Africa's river systems. Here, we examine the population genetic structure of Biomphalaria populations in East Africa using the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 (CO1) gene and the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2) region of nuclear ribosomal DNA. Biomphalaria snails were found at 31 of the 172 sites surveyed, with B. pfeifferi snails found at 23 sites and snails of the Biomphalaria 'Nilotic Species Complex' found at 9 sites. Biomphalaria pfeifferi formed a monophyle

Competitors and predators of hosts can alter transmission dynamics within host-parasite systems. Biocontrol aims to harness these effects to mitigate disease, but these attempts may backfire without an understanding of the ecological interactions involved. We investigated how resource competition among snail species affects transmission potential of the human flatworm parasite Schistosoma mansoni from its snail intermediate host, Biomphalaria glabrata. We created experimental communities with B. glabrata, S. mansoni and differing compositions of non-host competitor snails Melanoides tuberculat

Lymnaeid snails serve as intermediate hosts for Fasciola hepatica (Linnaeus, 1758), the etiological agent of fasciolosis, which is a widespread livestock disease in Argentina. Determining their geographic distribution and identifying the snail species involved in the transmission of fasciolosis can provide crucial information for designing strategic control programs. In this context, this work aimed at genetically characterizing the species of lymnaeid snails collected in different water bodies of northern Patagonia, Argentina. To this end, 689 snails were collected in 12 sites in the province

BACKGROUND: Schistosoma is one of the prevalent parasitic infection in humans and animals. Schistosomiasis in children is particularly serious and results in liver and spleen enlargement, anemia, stunting, reduced ability to learn and death. The aim of this study was to measure the prevalence and distribution of schistosomiasis in children, rodents and snail populations in Aleffa and Takusa districts, north-west Ethiopia.
METHODS: Disease status and exposure were simultaneously measured from December 2020 to December 2021. School children's stool specimens were collected for schistosomiasis e

In tropical countries, land snails are an important food source; however, foodborne disease risks are poorly quantified. We detected Campylobacter spp., Yersinia spp., Listeria spp., Salmonella spp., or Shiga-toxigenic Escherichia coli in 57%-86% of snails in Cameroon. Snail meat is a likely vector for enteric diseases in sub-Saharan Africa countries.

Metal defence against insect herbivory in hyperaccumulator plants is well documented. However, there are contradictory results regarding protection against snails. According to the joint effects hypothesis, inorganic and organic defences cooperate in plant protection. To test this hypothesis, we explored the relationships between snail (Cantareus aspersus) feeding and multiple inorganic and organic leaf components in the Cd hyperaccumulator plant Noccaea praecox. Plants grouped by rosette size growing in nutrient solution supplemented or not with 50 μM Cd were offered to the snails. After 3 da

More than 100 species of venomous cone snails (genus Conus) are highly effective predators of fish. The vast majority of venom components identified and functionally characterized to date are neurotoxins specifically targeted to receptors, ion channels, and transporters in the nervous system of prey, predators, or competitors. Here we describe a venom component targeting energy metabolism, a radically different mechanism. Two fish-hunting cone snails, Conus geographus and Conus tulipa, have evolved specialized insulins that are expressed as major components of their venoms. These insulins are

Molluscs, comprising one of the most successful phyla, lack clear evidence of adaptive immunity and yet thrive in the oceans, which are rich in viruses. There are thought to be nearly 120,000 species of Mollusca, most living in marine habitats. Despite the extraordinary abundance of viruses in oceans, molluscs often have very long life spans (10 to 100 years). Thus, their innate immunity must be highly effective at countering viral infections. Antiviral compounds are a crucial component of molluscan defenses against viruses and have diverse mechanisms of action against a wide variety of viruse

Cornu aspersum (= syn. Helix aspersa ) snails imported into NE Spain from Algeria and South Africa, and intended for human consumption via sale in public markets, were analyzed to assess their contribution to geographic dissemination of Brachylaima species. Prevalence and viability studies of metacercariae were performed on Algerian and South African Brachylaima adults. Morphometric studies were performed by measuring 16 variables in metacercariae and 18 variables in adults. Principal component analyses (PCA) were performed to assess the contribution of each variable in the separation of the d

Gastropod immunology is informed importantly by the study of the frequent encounters snails endure with digeneans (digenetic trematodes). One of the hallmarks of gastropod-digenean associations is their specificity: any particular digenean parasite species is transmitted by a limited subset of snail taxa. We discuss the nature of this specificity, including its immunological basis. We then review studies of the model gastropod Biomphalaria glabrata indicating that the baseline responses of snails to digeneans can be elevated in a specific manner. Studies incorporating molecular and functional

Freshwater snails have received much attention for their role as intermediate hosts for trematodes causing disease in people and animals such as schistosomiasis and various food-borne trematodes. While effective medical treatment exists for some of these diseases there is need for preventive measures to reduce transmission, e.g. control of intermediate hosts because transmission patterns are often complicated due to presence of reservoir final hosts. In order to implement control measures against the intermediate host snails with minimal impact on the freshwater ecosystems and their biodiversi

Freshwater snails in the family Bithyniidae are the first intermediate host for Southeast Asian liver fluke (Opisthorchis viverrini), the causative agent of opisthorchiasis. Unfortunately, the subtle morphological characters that differentiate species in this group are not easily discerned by non-specialists. This is a serious matter because the identification of bithyniid species is a fundamental prerequisite for better understanding of the epidemiology of this disease. Because DNA barcoding, the analysis of sequence diversity in the 5' region of the mitochondrial COI gene, has shown strong p

Biomphalaria alexandrina snails play an indispensable role in transmission of schistosomiasis. Infection rates in field populations of snails are routinely determined by cercarial shedding neglecting prepatent snail infections, because of lack of a suitable method for diagnosis. The present study aimed at separation and quantification of oxalic, malic, acetic, pyruvic, and fumaric acids using ion-suppression reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to test the potentiality of these acids to be used as diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers. The assay was done in both hemolym

The toxicity of selenium on Biomphalaria alexandrina snails, intermediate host for Schistosoma mansoni, was traced by studying its effect on the protein profile, free amino acids (FAA) and some urea cycle enzymes, namely, ornithine aminotransferase, argininosuccinate synthetase and arginase in hepatopancreas of snails. The results revealed that treatment with 15 ppm selenium dioxide (SeO2) caused an elevation in the protein content and a variation in the percentage and number of the different polypeptides as obtained by gel electrophoresis, and a remarkable reduction in all FAA except arginine

This study focuses on the possibility of experimental hybridization among host snail species for Schistosoma mansoni in Brazil, with morphological characterization of the hybrids found. By using albinism as a genetic marker, intraspecific crossbreedings were performed between two strains of each species involved, in addition to interspecific crossbreedings; the only viable crossbreeding was between pigmented Biomphalaria glabrata (Paulista, PE) and albino B. tenagophila (Joinville, SC), with the formation of F1 and F2 generations. All offspring in F1 displayed black eyes and a renal ridge on t

1. Carbohydrates were extracted from total tissue extracts of Biomphalaria alexandrina snails and were analyzed to their monosaccharides using GLC. 2. The snails were chemically treated with thioxanthone derivatives (compounds I, II, III) and the change in the monosaccharide constituents of their carbohydrates was investigated. 3. The isolated monosaccharides from native and chemically pretreated snails were injected into mice and their protective effects were examined after infection of mice with cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni. 4. The results showed that the main monosaccharides in carbohyd
