Epidemiology of snake bite in the district of Burdwan, West Bengal.

An epidemiological field survey on snake bite was conducted on 26 randomly selected villages with a population of 18,892 in the district of Burdwan, West Bengal to assess the magnitude of the problem in a decade (1980-1989). Total number of snake bite, number of presumably poisonous snake bite and deaths due to snake bite poisoning were 307, 48 and 31 respectively. The death rate among snake bite victims was 10.09%. Males (54.72%) were bitten more than females (45.23%) and highest incidence of snake bite was found in the age group of 21-30 years and during the months of July and August. Majori

Snake-bite-induced acute renal failure in India.

Acute renal failure complicates the course in 5% to 30% of victims of severe viper poisoning. No consensus exists on the single mechanism causing acute renal failure after viper bite. It is known, however, that viper venom induces several clinical abnormalities that favor the development of acute renal failure. These alterations include a varying degree of bleeding, hypotension, circulatory collapse, intravascular hemolysis, and disseminated intravascular coagulation with or without microangiopathy. A direct cytotoxic action of snake venom on the kidney is suspected, but convincing evidence is

[First aid and treatment of bites by snakes of the genus Vipera].

The amount of injected snake venom, the seriousness of the poisoning, the local and general clinical manifestations are influenced by several causes, which are analysed here. The most recent discoveries suggest the tight binding the bitten limb, extending the bandages as high as possible and applying a splint to the limb, in the first aid. The main steps of treatment, the laboratory tests, which may help the physician to follow the course of the poisoning, are then reported.

Prolonged defibrination after a bite from a 'nonvenomous' snake.

The distinction between venomous, potentially dangerous snakes and snakes considered to be harmless to humans is not always clear. A man was bitten by an assumed harmless pet snake, Rhabdophis subminatus (the red neck keelback), that had been obtained from a pet store. The patient experienced a severe coagulopathy with life-threatening hemorrhage unresponsive to transfusion. Since this snake frequently is sold legally in the United States, we wish to alert the medical community to its potential danger and to discuss the pathophysiological mechanism by which the coagulopathy was produced.

The Treatment of Snake Bites in a First Aid Setting: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The worldwide burden of snakebite is high, especially in remote regions with lesser accessibility to professional healthcare. Therefore, adequate first aid for snakebite is of the utmost importance. A wide range of different first aid techniques have been described in literature, and are being used in practice. This systematic review aimed to summarize the best available evidence concerning effective and feasible first aid techniques for snakebite. METHODS: A systematic literature screening, performed independently by two authors in the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE and Embase resulte

Cottonmouth snake bites reported to the ToxIC North American snakebite registry 2013-2017.

Introduction: The majority of venomous snake exposures in the United States are due to snakes from the subfamily Crotalinae (pit vipers). There are three types of US pit vipers: rattlesnakes (Crotalus and Sisturus spp.) copperheads (Agkistrodon contortrix), and cottonmouths (Agkistrodon piscivorus) also known as water moccasins. Cottonmouth bites are reported less frequently than other pit viper envenomations, and data on cottonmouth envenomation are limited. Our objective was to describe the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and management of cottonmouth envenomations using prospective d

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy after Bothrops lanceolatus snake bites in Martinique: a brief report.

Every year 10 to 20 cases of snake bites are reported on the Caribbean island of Martinique. The only snake involved, Bothrops lanceolatus, is endemic on the island, and its bite may lead to systemic multifocal thrombotic complications in the'absence of the monospecific antivenom. Between January 1988 and January 2009, more than 250 snake bites have been reported, and five patients were treated with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy for local complications. The patients were male, bitten on the leg or the hand, and presented with severe complications such as necrotizing soft tissue infections,

Complications of Echis colorata snake bites in the Asir region of Saudi Arabia.

Seven Saudi children bitten by Echis colorata, a species of carpet viper encountered mainly in the Middle East, were studied in south-western Saudi Arabia. They all showed severe local signs of swelling, ecchymosis and blisters, and one also had local necrosis. Four children had systemic envenoming with vomiting and hypotension, and one child had acute renal failure. Three of them had prolonged prothrombin and partial thromboplastin times and hypofibrinogenaemia resulting from disseminated intravascular coagulopathy. They were initially managed in the intensive care unit and received intraveno

Snake bite: clinical presentation, complication and outcome in relation to time of polyvalent snake antivenin in Yemen.

The snakebite envenoming is an important medical emergency. The envenoming is a complex medical emergency involving the site of the bite as well as multiple organ system. The symptoms and signs depend on the type and amount of venom injected, location of bite, victims' age, body size and general health conditions. This study clarified the clinical presentations; factors involved in complications and the outcome in relation to timing of polyvalent snake antivenin administration in 50 Patients were selected from cases admitted to Al-Salam Hospital at Saadah, Republic of Yemen. A preliminary survey of Hong Kong snake shops and the potential snake bite risks for the healthcare system.

Consumption of snakes is a traditional part of Chinese life. Snake shops, which provide both the food products and live snakes to the public, are believed by the medical community to stock only local species. The medical risk posed by these live snakes is therefore regarded as manageable as they are indigenous and thus effective anti-snake venom (ASV) is believed to be available. This study visited four snake shops, reviewed the snakes present and interviewed the vendors regarding the snakes' likely geographical origin. Snakes species were definitively identified and, in addition, the current

Prediction, prevention, and mechanism of early (anaphylactic) antivenom reactions in victims of snake bites.

Victims of snake bites are often subjected to cutaneous or conjunctival hypersensitivity testing before being given antivenom. None of 12 early (anaphylactic) reactions was predicted by these tests in 25 Nigerian and Thai patients. The incidence and severity of early reactions was the same whether antivenom was given by intravenous injection over 10 minutes or diluted and given as an intravenous infusion over 30 minutes. Although antivenom activated complement in vitro, there was no evidence of complement activation or formation of immune complexes in patients bitten by snakes who were treated

[Notes on bites of the snake Alsophis cantherigerus Bibron (Reptilia-Serpentes colubridae) in Cuba].

The two single cases of persons who were bitten by the abundant and current species of Cuban snake which is commonly known as "jubo" (Alsophis cantherigerus) and the bothersome lesions as a result of the enzymatic content of its saliva are reported. Likewise there are in the Antilles region other species of that genus which also cause such lesions since they also have the same characteristic. Bibliography on these ophidia and their main toxicology are pointed out.

[Ischemic stroke, an unusual complication of snake bite: case report].

Snake bite is the most severe type of envenomation. Annual incidence exceeds six million, with high mortality rates. Viper bites are often responsible for coagulopathy, which causes bleeding disorders. However, ischemic complications are rare. We here report the case of a 6-year-old girl victim of a viper [genus Cerastes] bite in the left ankle. She was admitted with disorders of consciousness and disseminated intravascular coagulation 4 days after the bite. Clinical examination showed left hemiparesis and left lower limb viperin syndrome. Brain CT scan objectified right temporoparietal ischem

Algorithmic approach to the prevention of unnecessary fasciotomy in extremity snake bite.

BACKGROUND: In the literature, there is a lack of a consensus about the occurrence of the compartment syndrome due to the snake bites. There are different concepts for the surgical treatment of the threshold value of the chamber pressure. There are many different classifications and assessment criteria for the snakebites. PURPOSE: There is not any appropriate classification in order to the assessment of extremity snake bites while making a decision for fasciotomy. We aimed to standardize the follow-up and decision making to perform fasciotomy with a new classification system for the snakebite

Hypopituitarism and AutoimmuneThyroiditis Following Snake Bite: An Unusual Clinical Scenario.

Snake venom can cause local tissue damage and lead to coagulopathy, shock, neurotoxicity and acute kidney injury. Hypopituitarism is a rare complication following snake bite. It has been described following Russell's viper bite from Burma and South India. Herein we describe a patient who presented with severe thyrotoxicosis and partial hypopituitarism following snake bite.

Bilateral parotid enlargement following snake bite: a rare sign.

Snakebite is a common medical emergency in India. Unusual complications may occur after viper bite. Bilateral parotid enlargement after viper bite is a rare entity. An 18-year old gentleman presented to our hospital with history of viper bite. On examination he had cellulitis of right lower limb. He developed swelling of both the parotid glands 12 h after admission. He developed coagulopathy, acute renal failure and died within 48 h of hospital admission. Development of parotid swelling after snake bite is associated with poor prognosis. This case is found worth reporting as it is an unusual c
