Diagnostic and Management Strategies of Visual Snow Syndrome: Current Perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS) is characterized by the presence of dynamic, continuous, tiny dots in the entire visual field persisting for more than three months, with at least two associated symptoms- palinopsia, photopsia, photophobia, or nyctalopia. VSS was introduced as perpetual visual disturbance representing TV static, based on early case reports from 1995. Despite its recognition, VSS management remains vague as many cases are refractory to treatment. This literature review aims to provide a summary of all attempted treatments and efficacies to help physicians manage VSS. M

Muscae volitantes: A 19th-century precursor of visual snow syndrome?

PURPOSE: Visual snow syndrome comprises a whole-field static-like visual disturbance, with increased awareness of entopic phenomena, an inability to suppress the 'just seen' and photophobia. Visual snow syndrome is often associated with other problems such as headache, tinnitus, and anxiety. The earliest reported case of a patient experiencing symptoms consistent with visual snow syndrome dates only to 1995. This paper seeks to find patterns of experience in the medical literature of the past that are reminiscent of visual snow syndrome, to challenge the view that it is in any sense a novel di

Symptomatic visual snow in acute ischemic stroke: A case series.

Visual snow is the main symptom of visual snow syndrome, a disorder of predominantly visual disturbances initially described in patients without abnormalities on ancillary investigations. We present a case series of patients with visual snow in the setting of acute ischemic stroke. The first and second patient reported previous episodic visual snow with migraine attacks. The third patient experienced visual snow for the first time during the ischemic stroke. In the first patient, the ischemic stroke affected the right and left precuneus and the right lingual gyrus. In the second patient, the i

Occipital ischaemic stroke after visual snow phenomenon - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Persistent migraine with aura and neuroimaging examinations revealing ischaemia in the contralateral cortex may be associated with migrainous infarction. Despite being a neurological symptom that is distinct from migraine with aura, the visual snow phenomenon may also be associated with cerebral ischaemia. Here we describe a patient who reported short-lasting daily symptoms of visual snow that affected his entire visual field before becoming continuous and left-sided following acute occipital brain ischaemia. CASE REPORT: In February 2017, a 74-year-old retired male was referred t

Marine snow viscosity regulates microbial degradation and the ocean carbon sink.

Bacterial degradation of marine snow aggregates is a major component of global carbon cycling. Whether aggregate carbon is released in the upper ocean or is sequestered at depth depends on its sinking speed and degradation rate. However, little is known about the physical constraints of bacterial colonization and degradation of individual aggregates. Using molecular rotors to measure the nanoscale viscosity field of natural aggregates, we show that aggregates are highly structured microhabitats with less-viscous regions that are accessible for colonization and more-viscous regions that correla

Hyperpigmentation Inhibits Early Skeletal Muscle Development in Tengchong Snow Chicken Breed.

Tengchong snow, which has white feathers and black meat, is one of the most important black-bone chicken breeds and a genetic treasure of black food in China. Although the black meat traits are dominant, there are some chickens with white meat traits born in the process of folk selection and breeding. The purpose of this study was to compare the differences in skeletal muscle development between Tengchong snow black meat chickens (BS) and white meat chickens (WS), as well as whether excessive melanin deposition has an effect on skeletal muscle development. The BS and WS groups were selected to

Occipital cortex and cerebellum gray matter changes in visual snow syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether regional gray and white matter differences characterize the brain of patients with visual snow syndrome, a newly defined neurologic condition, we used a voxel-based morphometry approach. METHODS: In order to investigate whole brain morphology directly, we performed an MRI study on patients with visual snow syndrome (n = 24) and on age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers (n = 24). Voxel-based morphometry was used to determine volumetric differences in patients with visual snow. We further analyzed cerebellar anatomy directly using the high-resolution spatially u

Microsurgical Replantation of Completely Avulsed Scalp Segment Recovered From Under Snow.

Complete scalp avulsion is a devastating injury resulting in permanent disfigurement. Replantation is the procedure of choice whenever possible. This report describes a successful case of microsurgical reattachment of complete scalp avulsion of temporoparietal segment in a 72-year-old female patient after her hair was tangled in the hoof crack of a horse when the animal slipped on ice and fell on a cold New England night. The amputated segment could be recovered from under snow only after 4 hours following the incident. The procedure involved microvascular anastomoses of superficial temporal a

snow white, a zebrafish model of Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome type 5.

Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (HPS) is a set of genetically heterogeneous diseases caused by mutations in one of nine known HPS genes. HPS patients display oculocutaneous hypopigmentation and bleeding diathesis and, depending on the disease subtype, pulmonary fibrosis, congenital nystagmus, reduced visual acuity, and platelet aggregation deficiency. Mouse models for all known HPS subtypes have contributed greatly to our understanding of the disease, but many of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying HPS remain unknown. Here, we characterize ocular defects in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) m

Veno-occlusive disease in snow leopards (Panthera uncia) from zoological parks.

Livers from 54 snow leopards, 4 days to 23 years old, that had died in 23 US zoos, were evaluated histopathologically to determine if the hepatic fibrosis, which has been noted to be prevalent in this species, was due to chronic active hepatitis from hepadnaviral infection, Ito cell proliferation, or hemosiderosis. Forty-two of 54 snow leopards had subintimal vascular fibrosis with partial or total occlusion of central and sublobular veins (veno-occlusive disease) of unknown origin. All 21 leopards older than 5 years were affected. Four leopards had chronic active hepatitis, and 12 leopards ha

Increased susceptibility to the face pareidolia illusion in Visual Snow syndrome.

Visual Snow (VS) syndrome is a neurological condition characterised by the constant perception of small flicking dots across the visual field. These symptoms are thought to be caused by hyperexcitability in the visual cortex. This study examined the potential link between VS and susceptibility to the face pareidolia (FP) illusion, where faces are perceived in inanimate objects. Using a self-report VS questionnaire and a standard FP sensitivity task, we collected data remotely from 132 individuals with VS and 104 age-matched controls. Results revealed higher FP sensitivity in individuals with V

Exploring the Phenotype and Possible Mechanisms of Palinopsia in Visual Snow Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Palinopsia (persistent afterimages and/or trailing) is a common but poorly understood symptom of the neurological condition visual snow syndrome. This study aimed to collect a phenotypical description of palinopsia in visual snow syndrome and probe for abnormalities in temporal visual processing, hypothesizing that palinopsia could arise from increased visibility of normal afterimage signals or prolonged visible persistence. METHODS: Thirty controls and 31 participants with visual snow syndrome (18 with migraine) took part. Participants completed a palinopsia symptom questionnaire. C

Re-evaluating John Snow's 1856 south London study.

John Snow, the London doctor who studied cholera in the 1840s and 1850s, argued in Snow (1856) that water exerted an "overwhelming influence" on mortality in a region of south London during the 1854 outbreak. In a paper re-assessing Snow's analysis, Koch and Denike (2006) claim that "Snow made not merely minor arithmetic errors but more importantly critical, conceptual mistakes that adversely affected his results." The claim of errors and mistakes is incorrect and due to a misreading or misunderstanding of Snow's data and analysis. Koch and Denike apply an inappropriate statistical test to Sno

Perceived severity of Visual Snow Syndrome is associated with visual allodynia.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether sensory sensitivity is associated with the perceived severity of Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS) symptoms. BACKGROUND: Visual Snow (VS) is a perceptual anomaly which manifests as flashing pinpricks of light throughout the visual field. VSS has an estimated population prevalence of 2.2% and is thought to be at least moderately debilitating for all who experience it. However, some people who meet the criteria for VSS have no awareness of it. This may be because they have lower sensory sensitivity, allowing them to ignore their visual phenomena. METHOD: Our study us

Visual snow syndrome is probably not mediated by CGRP: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Visual snow syndrome is a phenomenon for which no effective treatment is known. It is highly comorbid with migraine, therefore we performed a retrospective chart review of patients with visual snow syndrome treated with a monoclonal antibody against calcitonin gene related peptide or its receptor. FINDINGS: We enrolled 15 patients with visual snow syndrome who received at least once a monoclonal antibody against calcitonin gene related peptide or its receptor. None of the patients reported relief of visual snow syndrome whereas those patients with comorbid migraine reported a very

Phaeohyphomycosis in a snow leopard (Uncia uncia) due to Cladophialophora bantiana.

Phaeohyphomycosis caused by Cladophialophora bantiana was diagnosed in a 5-month-old snow leopard with spastic paralysis of the hind legs and inability to defaecate or urinate. At post-mortem examination, a greenish soft mass resembling an abscess was found on one side of the epidural space at the fourth lumbar vertebral body. Histological examination revealed a purulent meningitis with myelomalacia. Dematiaceous fungal hyphae, present within the inflammatory infiltrate, were identified as C. bantiana by culture and sequence analysis of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene. This neurotropic fungus rarel

Behavioral responses of bison and elk in Yellowstone to snowmobiles and snow coaches.

Managers of public lands are charged with protecting some of our most important natural resources and ecosystems, while providing for their use and enjoyment by visitors. Almost one million visitors entered Yellowstone National Park by motorized means on snowmobiles (87%) or snow coaches (13%) during 1992-2003. Most vehicles toured the central portion of the park where bison (Bison bison) and elk (Cervus elaphus) concentrate in geothermal areas. We sampled >6500 interactions between groups of these species and groups of snowmobiles and snow coaches (collectively, OSV, over-snow vehicles) durin
