Individualized monitoring of longitudinal heading exposure in soccer.

There is growing concern that repetitive soccer headers may have negative long-term consequences on brain health. However, inconsistent and low-quality heading exposure measurements limit past investigations of this effect. Here we conducted a comprehensive heading exposure analysis across all players on a university women's soccer team for over two calendar years (36 unique athletes), quantifying both game and practice exposure during all in-season and off-season periods, with over ten thousand video-confirmed headers. Despite an average of approximately 2 headers per day, players' daily expo

Imaging of soccer injuries in adolescent female athletes.

Soccer participation is increasing among female adolescents with a concomitant rise of injuries in this group. Age- and sex-related factors, such as the transition from skeletal immaturity to skeletal maturity as well as anatomic, physiologic, neuromuscular, and behavioral differences between females and males, all play a role in injury patterns for these athletes. Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears in this group have received a great deal of attention in the medical literature and the media in recent years with increasing knowledge about causative factors, surgical management, and injury

Neurophysiological Effects of Repeated Soccer Heading in Youth.

Repeated head loading in sports is associated with negative long-term brain health, and there is growing evidence of short-term neurophysiological changes after repeated soccer heading. The objective of this study was to quantify the head kinematics and effects of repetitive soccer headers in adolescents using an instrumented mouthguard. Adolescent soccer players aged 13-18 years were randomly assigned to a kicking control, frontal heading, or oblique heading group. Participants completed neurophysiological assessments at three-time points: immediately prior to, immediately after, and approxim

Concussions in Soccer: An Epidemiological Analysis in the Pediatric Population.

BACKGROUND: As the popularity of youth soccer has increased in the United States, more attention has been focused on the effect of concussion injuries, with recent debate on whether heading should be disallowed. There is little evidence examining the epidemiology of these injuries. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence and incidence of youth soccer-related concussions. We hypothesized that concussion rates will correlate with increased participation in youth soccer. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Su

ALCAPA syndrome in an asymptomatic young soccer player.

Anomalous origin of left coronary artery from pulmonary artery syndrome is a rare, but severe congenital cardiac malformation. It is an important cause of dilated cardiomyopathy and left heart failure during infancy and, if left untreated, the prognosis is poor with an overall mortality rate over 90%. About 15% of patients can survive beyond the first year of life, depending on the development of collateral circulation and may present with angina, dyspnea, syncope, and arrhythmias. Myocardial infarction and sudden cardiac death may be the only and the first symptom in some cases. The treatment

Myositis ossificans of the quadriceps femoris in a soccer player.

A young soccer player was diagnosed with myositis ossificans 6 weeks after a muscle strain in the right thigh. Radiographic and sonographic investigations initially helped to confirm diagnosis and later supported clinical improvement. We present our approach to the case and discuss pathophysiology, prevention and treatment of this rare condition.

Science and medicine applied to soccer refereeing: an update.

Soccer referees are required to keep up with play at all times to ensure optimal positioning in making key decisions. While the physiological aspects of soccer refereeing have been extensively reviewed, other key areas of preparation and performance have yet to be considered in detail. We present a contemporary examination of methodological considerations for the interpretation of referees' match activities, the validation of fitness testing and training protocols, match and training injury profiles, and the understanding and development of perceptual-cognitive expertise. A referee covers appr

[Effects of soccer-specific strains on the locomotor system].

PROBLEMS: Soccer as a Stop-and-Go-sport goes along with a high level of physical strain on the locomotor system. Compared to similar kinds of sports, soccer is characterized by a high prevalence of overloads/injuries in the pelvic region. Since soccer frequently involves one-sided shot-training, modifications in the pelvic statics are possible. METHODS: In a pilot study including 15 football-players-FP (age 26.9 +/- 3.1 yrs; 4.4 +/- 0.4 training units/week+ 1 leaque game) the pelvic statics was measured using the 3-d-recording system CMS70 (Zebris, Germany) directly before and after a defined

[Diagnostic imaging of injuries and overuse in soccer players].

Soccer is one of the most popular sports worldwide. There is a high incidence of injuries in soccer in which several intrinsic and extrinsic factors play a part. Most injuries are minor, self-limiting and do not need extensive medical treatment or imaging. Imaging can be required for several reasons e.g. when the clinical findings are doubtful, to replace arthroscopy (i. e. of the knee) or for prognostic reasons. All imaging modalities available to the radiologist can be used but MRI is the most valuable imaging modality with its superior contrast resolution and multiplanar capabilities. Basic

Comparison of impact data in hockey, football, and soccer.

PURPOSE: To compare accelerational forces to the head in high school-level football, hockey, and soccer athletes. METHODS: Acceleration of impact was measured within the helmet of high school hockey and football players during actual game play. A triaxial accelerometer was placed at the vertex of the helmet immediately adjacent to the players head. Peak acceleration (in g's) was measured and the Gadd Severity Index and Head Injury Criterion score calculated during actual play periods in several games over four seasons. We also recorded acceleration of head impacts in high school-level soccer

Soccer-Related Eye Injuries in Children and Adolescents.

In brief: To determine the severity and frequency of soccer-related injuries, the medical charts of 13 soccer players who had sustained blunt trauma to the eye were reviewed. The patients (five girls, eight boys) ranged in age from 8 to 15 years. Hyphema was the most common injury; others included retinal edema, angle recession, secondary glaucoma, and chorioretinal rupture. Six injuries were caused by the ball, three by a kick, and one by a head butt; in three cases the cause was unknown. Education of coaching staff, parents, and officials; protective eye wear; proper conditioning; strictly e

Key indicator for winning soccer matches: net efficiency.

BACKGROUND: Current soccer match analysis focuses predominantly on team tactics and technical aspects, such as offensive and defensive strategies and their transitions. However, match efficiency has received limited attention, making it difficult to explain scenarios where a team dominates possession but fails to secure victory. METHODS: This study introduced the concept of soccer match efficiency and proposed computational formulas for offensive efficiency (OE), defensive efficiency (DE), and net efficiency (NE). Using data from the Chinese Super League (CSL) between 2014 and 2019, we analyze

Concussions analysis in 2022-2024 CONMEBOL soccer tournaments.

INTRODUCTION: Sports-related concussions (SRC) are a pressing global health concern. However, countries in the Global South often lack standardized diagnostic criteria, and limited medical resources lead to inconsistent SRC detection. Our study presents a culturally adapted concussion detection protocol implemented by the region's governing soccer federation, CONMEBOL. METHODS: The Concussion Fast Recognition Protocol (CFRP) was developed by adapting the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool, the Standardized Assessment of Concussion, and incorporating community-level input to ensure cultural rele
