Couple relationship functioning and social adjustment during the transition to parenthood among fathers with a history of maltreatment.

Study of fathers has gained significant traction over recent decades. However, the experience for men over the transition to parenthood remains focused on high-socioeconomic and socially advantaged fathers. Researchers have yet to thoroughly investigate how fathers may uniquely experience this transition period with a history of childhood maltreatment, given that childhood abuse is known to impact several components of development and relationship functioning into adulthood. The current study endeavored to fill this gap by evaluating the associations between fathers' childhood experiences of p

Interactive patterns of social support and individual coping strategies in melanoma patients and their correlations with adjustment to illness.

Combined patterns of social support and coping style and correlations with adjustment to cancer were investigated in early-stage melanoma patients. The authors studied 358 consecutive patients attending regular follow-up who answered standardized instruments that assess social support, coping behavior, and tumor-related distress. Regression analyses identified high active and low depressive coping behavior as stronger predictors for perceived support than sociodemographic and clinical variables. Cluster analyses yielded four coping-support patterns. High social support, combined either with ac

Race Adjusted for Social and Environmental Disparities Is the Principal Determinant of T2HIGH Inflammation in Children With Severe Asthma.

BACKGROUND: Robust T-helper 2 (T2) inflammation drives a phenotype noted for difficult symptoms in children with asthma. Past studies show that Black children have greater T2 inflammation than White children. However, it is not clear how disparate social and environmental factors inform this difference. OBJECTIVE: To examine the fundamental factors that differentiate T2HIGH and T2LOW inflammation phenotypes in children with severe, treatment-refractory asthma. METHODS: Children underwent bronchoscopy and measures of blood T2 markers. T2HIGH children (n = 202) had blood or lung lavage (bronch

Peer victimization and adolescent's social adjustment: Testing the mechanism of the healthy context paradox in a two-wave study.

A recurring paradox in recent literature is that victims' psychological adjustment outcomes worsen as classroom-level victimization declines. Due to the limited and inconsistent findings from longitudinal studies, this two-wave study aims to examine whether the impact of individual-level victimization on three basic psychological needs (autonomy, relatedness, and competence needs) and internalizing problems (anxiety and depression) varies across classrooms with different victimization levels. A sample of Chinese adolescents (Time 1: N = 1358, 49.5% girls; Mage ± SD = 12.38 ± 0.53; Time 2: N =

The significance of best friends' motivations for social withdrawal: Associations with socio-emotional adjustment in Chinese children and adolescents.

This study applied the actor-partner interdependence model (APIM) to simultaneously consider whether, and how, motivations for social withdrawal among Chinese children and adolescents (actor effects) and their best friends (partner effects) uniquely contributed to indices of socio-emotional adjustment. Participants were 101 same-gender best friend dyads (46 boys, Mage = 12.17 years, SD = 1.39) in mainland China. Among the results, actor effects were found such that youths' own shyness and unsociability were related uniquely to the socio-emotional adjustment outcomes. In addition, partner effec

Occupational status and social adjustment six months after hospitalization early in the course of bipolar disorder: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: Bipolar disorder is often accompanied by poor functional outcomes, the determinants of which are not fully understood. We assessed patients with bipolar disorder undergoing a hospital admission early in the illness course and identified predictors of occupational status, overall social adjustment, and work adjustment six months later. METHODS: This was a prospective longitudinal cohort study. During hospitalization patients were evaluated with a cognitive battery; symptoms, occupational history, and other clinical factors were also assessed. At six-month follow-up, patients' sympt

The subjective assessment of work and social adjustment impairments and associated psychopathologies in Japanese adult female patients with anorexia nervosa.

AIM: Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) sometimes undergo a chronic course, and they hardly maintain social participation. Work and social adjustment impairments are generally significantly associated with the clinical symptoms of eating disorders. Psychopathologies associated with the subjective social difficulties of patients with AN have been unclear. This study examined the association between AN psychopathologies and work and social adjustment impairments in adult female patients with AN. METHODS: This study included 36 Japanese adult female patients with AN who completed the Work and S

Haloperidol and thiothixene in the long-term treatment of chronic schizophrenic outpatients in an urban community: social and vocational adjustment.

Social and vocational adjustment are highly important--but frequently overlooked--measures of the effectiveness of psychotropic agents in therapeutic regimens involving chronic schizophrenic outpatients. This 24-week, double-blind study compared the effectiveness of haloperidol and thiothixene in facilitating social and vocational adjustment, as well as in controlling more traditionally studied psychopathological parameters, among 36 urban schizophrenic outpatients. Significant improvement favoring thiothixene was shown on physicians' ratings, ratings by relatives living in the same household

Self-Compassion Mediates the Longitudinal Associations of Perceived Social Support With Individual Adjustment Among Chinese Parents of Kindergarten-Aged Children.

Previous research has documented positive associations between perceived social support and individual adjustment. However, little is known about the potentially unique implications of different sources of support for different indicators of adjustment among parents, not to mention the possible underlying mechanism. This study examined the longitudinal associations of family, friend, and community support with changes in psychological, social, cognitive, and physical adjustment among Chinese parents of young children. It also tested whether these associations were mediated by self-compassion.

Psychological, social and behavioural factors associated with disease/illness activity and adjustment to Lupus: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) bears a heavy toll on individuals' psychological wellbeing and quality of life. Despite vital to the development of effective interventions, systematic and quantifiable knowledge on modifiable factors associated with adult SLE adjustment and disease/illness activity is currently lacking. This systematic review with meta-analysis aimed to bridge this gap, by examining the effects of modifiable psychological, social, and behavioural factors associated with SLE adjustment and disease/illness activity. Eight databases were searched for quantitative studies, using
