Health-risking social behaviors: moving forward.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) have a long history of supporting investigator-initiated research and research training to enhance the scientific understanding of and effective interventions for a range of problems associated with youth violence. New technologies are emerging and basic research has promise for increasing our understanding of how biological factors operate in conjunction with other factors to contribute to violent behavior, psychopathology, and drug abuse. This article describes emerging areas and directions for res

[Behavioral and cognitive therapy for social phobia in a smoker].

INTRODUCTION: Social phobias are associated with nicotine addiction, and treatment for them can enable the patient to stop smoking. CASE: A patient seeking treatment to stop smoking was found to have a social phobia, which was treated with behavioral and cognitive therapy. At the end of this treatment, the patient spontaneously and without aids stopped smoking. DISCUSSION: Social phobias may be a factor in the onset of smoking and in the difficulties and relapses associated with cessation. They must be treated.

Cognitive-behavioral models of social anxiety disorder.

In 1985, Liebowitz et al labeled SAD the "neglected anxiety disorder." Clearly, times have changed. Although it took 10 years after this pronouncement for the first cognitive-behavioral model of SAD to be introduced, a great deal of research has been carried out and a great deal has been learned since then. The core features of these models seem to hold a great deal of validity. Perhaps the greatest "learning curve" has been seen in work done on the processing of the self as social object, a component of both cognitive-behavioral models of SAD. A great deal of empiric evidence now suggests tha

Social and behavioral correlates of pelvic inflammatory disease.

OBJECTIVES: To review the social and behavioral correlates of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in the light of the renewed interest in the transmission dynamics of communicable diseases, the new emphasis on health care seeking and health service provision, and increased attention to contextual and population level factors affecting morbidity. METHODS: Social and behavioral correlates of PID are reviewed using a conceptual scheme that matrixes the differences among risk factors for exposure, acquisition, and development of sequelae with the differences between individual-level risk factors an

Abused to abuser: antecedents of socially deviant behaviors.

The authors interviewed 34 young people who had been sexually abused as children 6 or 8 years after the abuse had occurred and compared them with 34 control subjects who had not been abused. They also compared subjects who had been abused for less than 1 year with those who had been abused for more than 1 year. The findings suggest a link between childhood sexual abuse and later drug abuse, juvenile delinquency, and criminal behavior. The authors explore the effects of pretrauma factors of previous childhood physical abuse and parental modeling of aggression and the postdisclosure factors of s

Understanding the Relation Between Social Behaviors and Daily Fantasy Sports Risk Behavior.

In daily fantasy sports (DFS) contests, participants form a roster of athletes scheduled to perform in a pre-determined list of sporting contests or games. Each participant has the opportunity to win cash prizes, depending on the performance of the athletes on their roster and the performances of the athletes on the other participants' rosters. Some contests have higher variances than others (i.e., lower percentages of participants winning and higher payouts versus higher percentages of participants winning and lower payouts) and can be considered riskier propositions. DFS operators have mecha

Childhood body-focused behaviors and social behaviors as risk factors of eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: The risk factors for adolescent eating disorders are poorly understood. It is generally agreed, however, that interactions with one's body and interactions with others are two important features in the development of anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Therefore, we assessed a variety of childhood body-focused behaviors and childhood social behaviors in eating-disordered patients as compared to non-eating-disordered subjects. METHOD: We compared 50 female inpatients with eating disorders (anorexia or bulimia nervosa), 50 female inpatients with polysubstance dependence, and 50 nonpatient

Social and behavioral factors associated with high-risk sexual behavior among adolescents.

Relationships among risky sexual behaviors, other problem behaviors, and the family and peer context were examined for two samples of adolescents. Many adolescents reported behaviors (e.g., promiscuity or nonuse of condoms) which risked HIV or other sexually transmitted disease infection. Such risky behaviors were significantly intercorrelated. Consistent condom use was rare among those whose behavior otherwise entailed the greatest risk of infection. In both samples, an index of high-risk sexual behavior was significantly related to antisocial behavior, cigarette smoking, and illicit drug or

Preschool behavioral and social-cognitive problems as predictors of (Pre)adolescent disruptive behavior.

This article describes preschool social understanding and difficult behaviors (hot temper, disobedience, bossiness and bullying) as predictors of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and aggressive conduct disorder (ACD) in a Dutch population sample of (pre)adolescents (N = 1943), measured at age 10-12 and at age 13-15. ODD and ACD were assessed by the Child Behavior Checklist and the Youth Self-Report, preschool behavior was evaluated by the parental questionnaire [Symbol: see text]How was your child as a preschooler? (age 4-5)'. Adjusted for each other, all difficult preschool behaviors excep

Neonatal handling shapes the adult development of social behavior in rats: enduring effects after prolonged social deprivation.

Neonatal handling is an early-life intervention known to produce long-lasting reductions in emotional reactivity and physiological responses to stress in rodents. Although its effects on social behavior remain less well characterized, previous studies have shown that neonatal handling enhances juvenile play behavior, suggesting broader effects on the social behavioral repertoire. The present study examined whether the social effects of neonatal handling observed in younger animals persist into adulthood by assessing social interaction in 10-month-old rats. Social interaction was quantified as

Using a Social Network Approach to Characterize Oral Health Behavior Social Support Among Mexican-Origin Young Adults.

Using a social network approach, we characterize who Mexican-origin young adults perceive as social support sources for oral health behaviors and provide additional validity evidence for Oral Health Behavior Social Support Scales (OHBSS). From April to September 2022, we gathered social network data from 62 Mexican-origin adults (21-40 years old) through Zoom interviews about their perceived received social support for three oral health behaviors (toothbrushing, flossing, and obtaining dental care) from three potential sources of support (family, health providers, and others/friends). Reduced childhood social attention in autism model marmosets predicts impaired social skills and inflexible behavior in adulthood.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social and communication impairments and restricted and repetitive behavior. Although there is currently no established cure for ASD, early interventions for deficits of attention to other individuals are expected to reduce the progression of ASD symptoms in later life. To confirm this hypothesis and improve early therapeutic interventions, it is desirable to develop an animal model of ASD in which social attention is impaired in childhood and ASD-like social behavior is observed in adulthood. However, rodent mod

Diazepam reverses increased anxiety-like behavior, social behavior deficit, and dopamine dysregulation following withdrawal from acute amphetamine.

Psychostimulants such as amphetamine (AMPH) increase dopamine (DA) release from ventral tegmental area (VTA) neurons, which is associated with their acute reinforcing actions. This positive state is followed by a negative affective state during the withdrawal period each time the drug is taken (i.e., opponent process theory). AMPH withdrawal is accompanied by symptoms of anxiety and depression, which are associated with DA system dysfunction in humans and animal models. Most studies have focused on the negative affective state after withdrawal from chronic drug administration; yet, this negati

The socially enriched environment test: a new approach to evaluate social behavior in a mouse model of social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common anxiety disorder characterized by a marked fear of social situations. Treatments for SAD, including exposure therapy and medication, are not satisfactory for all patients. This has led to the development of several paradigms to study social fear in rodents. However, there are still some social impairments observed in SAD patients that have never been examined in rodent models. Indeed, social situations avoided by SAD patients include not only social interactions but also public performances and being observed by others. Nevertheless, tests used to asse

Dose-dependent modulation of social and motivational behavior by lurasidone in a rat model of social defeat.

Chronic psychosocial stress is a key risk factor for psychiatric disorders, often causing motivational and social impairments poorly responsive to conventional pharmacotherapies. The present study investigated the effects of chronic lurasidone treatment on behavioral and molecular alterations induced by prolonged social defeat (SD) stress in adult male rats. Rats underwent resident-intruder SD paradigm for approximately seven weeks and treated orally with lurasidone (1 or 3 mg/kg/day) during the final three weeks. Motivational drive was assessed using sucrose self-administration under fixed an

Effects of chronic social defeat stress on social behavior and cognitive flexibility for early and late adolescent.

This study investigated the risk to social behavior and cognitive flexibility induced by chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) during early and late adolescence (EA and LA). Utilizing the "resident-intruder" stress paradigm, adolescent male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to CSDS during either EA (postnatal days 29-38) or LA (postnatal days 39-48) to explore how social defeat at different stages of adolescence affects behavioral and cognitive symptoms commonly associated with psychiatric disorders. After stress exposure, the rats were assessed for anxiety-like behavior in the elevated plus maze

Behavioral and EEG responses to social evaluation: A two-generation family study on social anxiety.

Social anxiety disorder is an invalidating psychiatric disorder characterized by extreme fear and avoidance of one or more social situations in which patients might experience scrutiny by others. The goal of this two-generation family study was to delineate behavioral and electrocortical endophenotypes of social anxiety disorder related to social evaluation. Nine families of patients with social anxiety disorder (their spouse and children, and siblings of these patients with spouse and children) performed a social judgment paradigm in which they believed to be evaluated by peers. For each peer

Neural Control of Sexually Dimorphic Social Behavior: Connecting Development to Adulthood.

Rapid advances in the neural control of social behavior highlight the role of interconnected nodes engaged in differential information processing to generate behavior. Many innate social behaviors are essential to reproductive fitness and therefore fundamentally different in males and females. Programming these differences occurs early in development in mammals, following gonadal differentiation and copious androgen production by the fetal testis during a critical period. Early-life programming of social behavior and its adult manifestation are separate but yoked processes, yet how they are li
