The road not taken: social vs. private comparisons in Asperger׳s syndrome and high functioning autism.

Evaluation of the outcomes of our decisions may instigate comparisons of our actual outcome with those of others (social comparisons) or comparisons with alternative outcomes of choices not made (private comparisons). Previous research has suggested a deficit in attention to social information among individuals with autism spectrum disorders. As social comparison involves the processing of social information, here we investigated the orientation towards and sensitivity to social vs. private comparisons in individuals with autism spectrum disorders. We compared the sensitivity to social vs. pri

Model syndromes for investigating social cognitive and affective neuroscience: a comparison of Autism and Williams syndrome.

Autism and Williams syndrome are genetically based neurodevelopmental disorders that present strikingly different social phenotypes. Autism involves fundamental impairments in social reciprocity and communication, whereas people with Williams syndrome are highly sociable and engaging. This article reviews the behavioral and neuroimaging literature that has explored the neurocognitive mechanisms that underlie these contrasting social phenotypes, focusing on studies of face processing. The article concludes with a discussion of how the social phenotypes of both syndromes may be characterized by

A comparison between socially anxious and depressive symptomatology in youth: a focus on perceived family environment.

The current study employed present-oriented self-report measures to compare groups of socially anxious, depressed, mixed socially anxious and depressed, and comparison youth on perceptions of the family environment, as assessed via the Family Environment Questionnaire (FEQ). Results indicated that the mixed and depressed groups rated their parents as being overly concerned with others' opinions, feeling ashamed of their performance, and restricting family sociability more than the socially anxious and comparison groups. With respect to the latter two groups, the socially anxious group rated th

A comparison of two self-report measures of children's social anxiety in clinic and community samples.

Examined the relations between the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory for Children (SPAI-C) and the Social Anxiety Scale for Children-Revised (SASC-R) in community (n = 178) and clinic (n = 57) samples. A large proportion of children exceeded the recommended SPAI-C and SASC-R cutoffs for suggesting clinically significant levels of social phobia and social anxiety in the community (37% SPAI-C and 20% SASC-R) and clinic (58% SPAI-C and 42% SASC-R) samples. A large proportion of children scoring in the clinical range on the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) exceeded the SASC-R and SPAI-C cutoff sc

Social comparison and adjustment to breast cancer: an experimental examination of upward affiliation and downward evaluation.

In a study designed to evaluate the divergence of social comparison activities under health threat, breast cancer patients (n = 94) were assigned randomly to listen to an audiotaped interview in which the target's psychological adjustment and disease prognosis were manipulated to reflect good, poor, and unspecified psychological and physical health status. Results supported hypotheses regarding downward self-evaluative and upward affiliative comparison activity, as well as predictions regarding the influences of comparison dimension. With regard to desire for affiliation, participants demonstr

Buspirone increases social investigation in pair-housed male mice; comparison with the effects of chlordiazepoxide.

Effects of buspirone (1, 5 and 10 mg/kg, i.p.) on the behaviour of adult male CD1 mice have been compared with those of chlordiazepoxide (1, 4 and 8 mg/kg, i.p.). Commencing at 30 min after injection, the behaviour of each mouse was examined by ethological procedures during 5 min social encounters with an untreated partner in the animal's home cage and in the more aversive situation of an unfamiliar neutral cage. In both test environments, buspirone at 1 and 5 mg/kg and chlordiazepoxide (CDP) at 1 and 4 mg/kg increased social investigation and some of its constituent elements, while decreasing

Neural signature underlying the effect of intranasal vasopressin on emotional responses to spontaneous social comparison.

Vasopressin, a key molecular regulator of social behavior, is implicated in promoting self-protective responses to threats against physical safety and resources. However, its role in defending against self-view threats-common in social interactions and critical to well-being-remains unclear. This study investigates the neural mechanisms through which vasopressin modulates self-protective responses to spontaneous social comparison. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled neuroimaging study, 48 healthy male participants were randomized to receive intranasal vasopressin or placebo. Participants the

Comparison of Emergency Department Patients with Salpingitis and Oophoritis with and without Documented Social Determinants of Health.

INTRODUCTION: Social determinants of health (SDoH) have emerged as a critical focus of research due to their significant impact on clinical outcomes; however, there is a gap in research specific to women's health. Understanding the factors underlying trends in gynecologic emergency diagnoses requires a more comprehensive examination of SDoH. In this study we characterize the demographic and clinical profile of patients with documented SDoH International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10), Z codes (Z55-Z65) who presented to the emergency department (ED) with salpingitis and ooph

Older Adults' Loneliness and Social Relationships in the Philippines: Comparison Between Rural and Urban Contexts.

This study compared patterns of association between social relationship measures and levels of loneliness for rural and urban older adults in the Philippines. We analyzed social relationship measures and loneliness scores (UCLA Three-Item Loneliness Scale) of a nationally representative sample of Filipino adults 60 years and older in the baseline survey of the 2018 Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Health in the Philippines (LSAHP) (n=4,704). The loneliness score was slightly higher for rural older adults (5.8) than for their urban counterparts (5.1; p=.0001). A significantly larger proportion

The Role of Social Networks on Depressive Symptoms: A Comparison of Older Koreans in Three Geographic Areas.

The purpose of this study was to examine the correlates of depressive symptoms among older Korean adults in three geographic locations with varying densities of the Korean population: mainland Korea (mostly Koreans), New York metropolitan area (high Korean density), and west central Florida (low Korean density). The study focused on the role of family and friend networks. Data were drawn from three sources: (1) a multistage national sample of Koreans in South Korea (n = 403); (2) a survey conducted in the western/central Florida area that used a variety of culturally sensitive sampling strateg

Psychosocial roots of paranoid ideation: The role of childhood experiences, social comparison, submission, and shame.

BACKGROUND: Social experiences have a significant impact on cognitive functioning and appraisals of social interactions. Specifically, recalls of antipathy from parents, submissiveness, and bullying during childhood can have a significant influence on paranoid ideation later in life. METHOD: Multiple hierarchical regression analysis was performed on a sample of 91 patients diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in remission and active phase, their first-degree relatives (n = 32) and unaffected controls (n = 64). OBJECTIVES: Exploring the impact of distal (events from childhood) and proximal f

An Experimental Comparison of Techniques: Cognitive Defusion, Cognitive Restructuring, and in-vivo Exposure for Social Anxiety.

BACKGROUND: One of the primary differences between Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for anxiety is the approach to managing negative thoughts. CBT focuses on challenging the accuracy of dysfunctional thoughts through cognitive restructuring exercises, whereas ACT attempts to foster acceptance of such thoughts through cognitive defusion exercises. Previous research suggests that both techniques reduce the distress associated with negative thoughts, though questions remain regarding the benefit of these techniques above and beyond exposure to feared

Anxiety-promoting parenting behaviors: a comparison of anxious parents with and without social anxiety disorder.

While parenting behaviors among anxious parents have been implicated in the familial transmission of anxiety, little is known about whether these parenting behaviors are unique to specific parental anxiety disorders. The current study examined differences in the use of five specific parenting behaviors (i.e., warmth/positive affect, criticism, doubts of child competency, over-control, and granting of autonomy) in anxious parents with (n = 21) and without (n = 45) social anxiety disorder (SAD) during a 5-minute task with their non-anxious child (aged 7-12 years, M = 9.14). Premorbid adjustment in first episode schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders: a comparison of social and academic domains.

OBJECTIVE: Recent evidence suggests that premorbid adjustment in schizophrenia and related disorders can be separated into social and academic domains. In this paper, we examine the correlates of and prognostic significance of social and academic premorbid adjustment in a sample of 113 patients. METHOD: Premorbid adjustment, symptoms and cognitive functioning were assessed at presentation for treatment and symptoms were re-assessed after a year of treatment. RESULTS: Females and those with a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder were found to have better premorbid adjustment in the academic

Social "status" and biological "status": a comparison of grave goods and skeletal indicators from Pontecagnano.

Comparison of funerary treatment and skeletal biology can be very informative about the interplay of social status and meanings and actual life conditions in ancient communities, but such comparison is rarely done, due in part to the disciplinary separation of bioanthropology and social archaeology in many archaeological traditions. In this paper, we analyze relations between skeletal pathologies and grave goods in a sample of 94 individuals from Pontecagnano (Salerno, Italy, seventh-third centuries BC). The results show that the relationship between health, activity, and social status as expr

"My friends are better parents than me": Comparison and shaming, social support, and parental burnout.

Parental burnout has gained global attention in recent years due to its effects on family functioning and the well-being of both parents and children. While numerous risk and protective factors have been identified, limited research has examined how group dynamics relate to parental burnout. Our current cross-sectional, cross-cultural study investigated the associations and underlying mechanisms linking perceived social support, parents' personal social comparison, and critical comparison and shaming by family members (CCS) to parental burnout. The sample included 1,373 parents from the United

Comparison of social cognitive functioning in schizophrenia and high functioning autism: more convergence than divergence.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with schizophrenia and individuals with high-functioning autism (HFA) seem to share some social, behavioral and biological features. Although marked impairments in social cognition have been documented in both groups, little empirical work has compared the social cognitive functioning of these two clinical groups. METHOD: Forty-four individuals with schizophrenia, 36 with HFA and 41 non-clinical controls completed a battery of social cognitive measures that have been linked previously to specific brain regions. [Outcome after Guillain-Barré syndrome: comparison of motor function status and changes in social life].

Effects on the motor function and social life of the patients after Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) were studied. A letter of inquiry was sent to the patients in November 2001; 98 patients responded validly. The questionnaire had questions with 3 possible answers related to situations at work, at home, and about leisure activities. The Hughes functional grade, which evaluates physical conditions, and arm disability scale scores were assessed. Although the assessments showed good recovery in most patients who had had a job, 31% had to quit work, and 17% had to discontinue their leisure activities
