Housing conditions during self-administration determine motivation for cocaine in mice following chronic social defeat stress.

RATIONALE: Stress exposure has a lasting impact on motivated behavior and can exacerbate existing vulnerabilities for developing a substance use disorder. Several models have been developed to examine how stressful experiences shape drug reward. These range from locomotor sensitization and conditioned place preference to the propensity for drug self-administration or responding to drug-predictive cues. While self-administration studies are considered to have more translational relevance, most of the studies to date have been conducted in rats. Further, many self-administration studies are cond

Impact of secondary health conditions on social role participation for a long-term physical disability cohort.

For people living with long-term physical disability (LTPD) social participation may involve managing physical impairments and secondary health conditions (SHCs) that are not due to the pathophysiology of the LTPD diagnosis itself. Prior research found a negative relationship between SHCs and participation in social roles in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). We expand on this research by investigating the influence of SHCs on participation in social roles for people with one of four LTPDs, controlling for co-variates. We (1) evaluated the associations between SHCs and participation in soci

Psychological and social factors in undergoing reconstructive surgery among individuals with craniofacial conditions: an exploratory study.

Objective : Reconstructive surgery to improve psychological well-being is commonly offered to children with craniofacial conditions. Few studies have explored the challenges of reconstructive surgery beyond the physical risks: poor treatment outcomes, infection, brain damage, and death. This qualitative study aims to understand the psychological and social implications such interventions can have for individuals with craniofacial conditions. Design : A total of 38 individuals between the ages of 12 and 61 with such craniofacial conditions as Sturge-Weber syndrome, Treacher Collins syndrome, Mö

Life course social and health conditions linked to frailty in Latin American older men and women.

BACKGROUND: Gender, social conditions, and health throughout the life course affect functional health in later life. This article addresses two specific hypotheses: i) life-course social and health conditions are associated with frailty; and ii) differential exposure and/or vulnerability of women and men to life-course conditions may account for gender differences in frailty. METHODS: Data originated from a cross-national survey of older adults living in five large Latin American cities. Frailty was defined as the presence of three or more of five criteria: unintentional weight loss (10 pound

[Hepatitis C virus infections among persons attending special clinics dealing with problems related to social conditions].

We have studied the prevalence of hepatitis C virus antibodies among 526 persons who attended an HIV diagnostic and counselling clinic and a clinic for sexually transmitted diseases in Oslo, Norway, during a 4-month period in early 1990. Possible risk factors for contracting hepatitis C virus infection were analysed and compared with results of the anti-hepatitis C virus test. The over-all prevalence rate of positive anti-hepatitis C virus tests was 7%. The prevalence rate was highest, 70%, among intravenous drug users (26/37). When intravenous drug users were excluded, only 2% of the remainin

Characterization of operant social interaction in rats: effects of access duration, effort, peer familiarity, housing conditions, and choice between social interaction vs. food or remifentanil.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: Social factors play a critical role in drug addiction. We recently showed that rats will abstain from methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and remifentanil self-administration when given a choice between the addictive drug and operant social interaction. Here, we further characterized operant social interaction by determining the effects of access duration, effort, peer familiarity, and housing conditions. We also determined choice between social interaction vs. palatable food or remifentanil. METHODS: We first trained single-housed male and female rats to lever-press fo

Social Determinants of Health and Incident Depressive Symptoms in Older Adults With Chronic Conditions: Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: While the role of social determinants of health (SDH) in physical health is well known, their longitudinal contribution to depressive symptoms in chronically ill adults remains understudied. Understanding how socioeconomic disadvantage compounds the psychological burden of chronic disease may inform preventive psychiatry in aging populations. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether key SDH were associated with the incidence of depressive symptoms among older adults with chronic disease across Europe. METHODS: Using data from waves 1-9 of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement

Work Conditions, Social Incorporations, and Foodborne Diseases Risk: Reflections About the (Non)Compliance of Food Safety Practices.

The number of foodborne diseases has increased in all continents, and efforts must be made to control this urgent and expressive public health problem. This article aims to present and discuss situations related to the compliance and noncompliance of food safety practices (FSPs) in light of Bourdieu's social theory. This qualitative study was conducted in commercial restaurants in two cities in São Paulo, Brazil. Participant observation was used in the restaurants, and notes referring to the kitchen workers and their bosses' work processes were registered in field journals. Thematic type conte

Marital status and cohabitation during pregnancy: relationship with social conditions, antenatal care and pregnancy outcome in France.

A survey of a representative sample of 5508 births in France in 1981 permitted the study of social characteristics of pregnant women, the medical care they received during their pregnancy and their pregnancy outcome, as a function of their marital status and whether or not they lived with the father of the child. Unmarried women living with the father (n = 412) like unmarried women living alone (n = 171), were more often younger, having their first baby and had a lower educational level than did married women living with the father (n = 4590). However, among the unmarried women, those living a

Improving diabetic control in adverse social conditions. A home blood glucose monitoring study in Soweto, South Africa.

In order to explore the feasibility of home blood glucose monitoring (HBGM) in Type 1 diabetics in developing countries, we introduced the technique to Type 1 patients below the age of 30 yr attending the Diabetic Clinic serving Soweto in South Africa. Despite initial problems, HBGM with visually-read strips was applied to 45 of the 64 young Type 1 diabetics identified ("HBGM group"). The remaining 19 were continued on urine glucose monitoring only ("HUGM group"), usually because of attendance and compliance problems. After 4 months' follow-up, glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1) fell from 10.5 +/

Structural conditions, social networks, and the HIV vulnerability among Indonesian male labour migrants and motorbike taxi drivers.

BACKGROUND: The Indonesian National AIDS report reveals that the percentage of HIV cases in the country is significantly higher in men compared to women, which is contrary to global AIDS data. Using a conceptual model of how social networks impact health, this paper describes how structural conditions, such as poverty, lack of job opportunities, and lack of income shaped the social networks of Indonesian men. It also describes how these social networks created opportunities for various social mechanisms, including social influence, peer pressure, and intimate contact, that facilitated HIV infe
