Integration of Multiple Social Cues in Williams Syndrome: Neural and Behavioral Evidence.

The study examined whether the social phenotype in Williams syndrome (WS) arises from atypical perception, attention, or executive function. Adults with WS (n=30) and neurotypical controls (n=32) completed a "Mind Reading" task requiring integration of facial emotions and gaze direction to infer desirability of concurrently presented objects. Participants with WS succeeded on direct gaze trials but performed near chance when disengagement from gaze direction was required. Perceptual (N170), attentional (P3), and emotional (LPP) neural response patterns were comparable between the groups. The d

Symmetry, averageness, and feature size in the facial attractiveness of women.

Female facial attractiveness was investigated by comparing the ratings made by male judges with the metric characteristics of female faces. Three kinds of facial characteristics were considered: facial symmetry, averageness, and size of individual features. The results suggested that female face attractiveness is greater when the face is symmetrical, is close to the average, and has certain features (e.g., large eyes, prominent cheekbones, thick lips, thin eyebrows, and a small nose and chin). Nevertheless, the detrimental effect of asymmetry appears to result solely from the fact that an asym

Direct and indirect estimation of adolescent sexual intercourse and contraceptive use in Rajasthan India: an application of the best friend methodology.

BACKGROUND: Existing estimates of adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) behaviors may be a gross undercount given the sensitivity of this behavior in Indian culture. The objective of this study was to estimate ASRH behaviors in Rajasthan, India using direct questions and the best friend approach that seeks to reduce social desirability bias. METHODS: We used population-based data of adolescents aged 15-19 in Rajasthan collected between September and December 2022. Data include whether the respondent and her closest female friend ever had a partner, ever had sex, ever used contracep

Adolescent girls' interpersonal vulnerability to depressive symptoms: a longitudinal examination of reassurance-seeking and peer relationships.

A transactional, interpersonal framework involving adolescents' reassurance-seeking and peer experiences may be useful for understanding the emergence of gender differences in depression prevalence during the adolescent transition. Sociometric nominations of peer acceptance/rejection and ratings of friendship quality provided by adolescents and their friends were used to measure peer experiences among 6th-8th-grade adolescents (N=520) over 3 annual time points. After controlling for age and pubertal development, significant but small prospective effects offered mixed support for hypotheses: (a

Variables associated with frequency of rumination in a boy with profound mental retardation.

The relationships between frequency of rumination in a boy with profound mental retardation and a variety of environmental, interpersonal, and temporal variables were investigated by collecting and analyzing data during all waking hours over a 4-week period. Low levels of rumination were associated with periods of special education programming (versus nonschool hours), individual attention (versus group activities and independent play), and time spent with caretakers who like the child (versus those who like him less). The findings also revealed a mealtime effect (decreasing rumination as time

Looking for the negative: Depressive symptoms in adolescent girls are associated with sustained attention to a potentially critical judge during in vivo social evaluation.

Attention biases toward negative stimuli are implicated in the development and maintenance of depression. However, research is needed to understand how depression affects attention biases as they unfold in a dynamic social environment, particularly during adolescence when depression rates significantly increase due to enhanced reactivity to social stress. To examine attention biases in a live, socially evaluative environment, 26 adolescent girls from the community gave a speech in front of a potentially critical judge and a positive judge while wearing mobile eye tracking glasses. Girls' depre

Kicking the (barking) dog effect: the moderating role of target attributes on triggered displaced aggression.

Sometimes aggression is displaced onto a target who is not totally innocent but emits a mildly irritating behavior called a triggering event. In three experiments, the authors examine stable personal attributes of targets that can impact such triggered displaced aggression (TDA). Lower levels of TDA were directed to targets whose attitudes were similar as compared to dissimilar to those of the actor (Experiment 1) and to targets who were ingroup as compared to out-group members (Experiment 2). Conceptually replicating the findings of Experiments 1 and 2, the manipulated valence of the target (

Colorism and Sexual Health: A Rapid Review.

Colorism is a skin-tone stratification system that privileges proximity to Eurocentric features and disadvantages darker skin tones and Afrocentric features. Although colorism is increasingly recognized as a gendered social determinant of health, its role in shaping sexual health among Black and Brown girls and women remains understudied. This rapid review synthesized peer-reviewed empirical evidence on the relationship between colorism, skin tone, and sexual health outcomes among girls and women. Searches were conducted in PsycINFO and PubMed between April and May 2026. After removing duplica

Blind spots of psychotherapists? Implicit and explicit mental illness stigma in psychotherapists, psychology students, and laypersons.

BACKGROUND: While explicit mental illness stigma in mental health professionals is often lower compared to laypersons, implicit mental illness stigma is not. However, implicit mental illness stigma may negatively affect treatment processes and outcomes, for example, via over-diagnosis, yet few studies examine such attitudes held by psychotherapists/clinical psychologists. We explored whether psychotherapists differ from psychology students and laypersons in their explicit or implicit mental illness stigma. METHODS: We created a Single Category Implicit Association Task to measure implicit sti

The Index of Consensual Sexual Sadism (ICSS): Scale development, validation, measurement invariance, and nomological network comparisons with everyday sadism.

Sexual sadism has long been of interest to scholars and clinicians in psychology, and most research on sexual sadism has focused on forensic samples. However, recently, research has uncovered the existence of sexual sadism in general populations. Measures designed to assess sexual sadism in the general population are lacking. To address this gap, we created the Index of Consensual Sexual Sadism (ICSS) and performed some initial psychometric testing of its structure, measurement invariance, validity (e.g., distinguishment from everyday sadism), and reliability. In this preregistered study, sepa

Patterns of aggression in the personality structure of depressed patients.

The personality characteristics of 208 depressed patients of both sexes were studied by means of a Swedish personality inventory--the KSP--when the patients had recovered from the depressive syndrome. The patients in the study were divided into unipolars, bipolars, neurotic-reactive and "unspecified", i.e. those patients who did not meet the criteria for inclusion in any of the aforementioned groups. Female patients scored higher on variables of anxiety and psychasthenia and male patients scored higher on variables indicating distance preference and hostility. Several traits, in particular tho

Alcohol and anxiety: subtle and obvious attributes of abuse in adults with social anxiety disorder and panic disorder.

Previous research has found a relation between social anxiety disorder and alcoholism but recent work found no differences in drinking levels among socially anxious individuals, dysthymics, and normal controls. Using a more sophisticated measure of substance abuse may further explicate the relation between social anxiety and drinking. We examined aspects of substance abuse in treatment-seeking individuals with social anxiety disorder or panic disorder (psychiatric control group) as well as nondisordered individuals (normal control group). We used the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory-

Development and validation of measures of social phobia scrutiny fear and social interaction anxiety.

The development and validation of the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) two companion measures for assessing social phobia fears is described. The SPS assesses fear of being scrutinised during routine activities (eating, drinking, writing, etc.), while the SIAS assesses fear of more general social interaction, the scales corresponding to the DSM-III-R descriptions of Social Phobia--Circumscribed and Generalised types, respectively. Both scales were shown to possess high levels of internal consistency and test-retest reliability. They discriminated betwee

Relational diversity and neighbourhood cohesion. Unpacking variety, balance and in-group size.

Ethnic diversity is typically measured by the well-known Hirschman-Herfindahl Index. This paper discusses the merits of an alternative approach, which is in our view better suited to tease out why and how ethnic diversity matters. The approach consists of two elements. First, all existing diversity indices are non-relational. From the viewpoint of theoretical accounts that attribute negative diversity effects to in-group favoritism and out-group threat, it should however matter whether, given a certain level of overall diversity, an individual belongs to a minority group or to the dominant maj

Gender minority stress in transgender people: a major role for social network.

BACKGROUND: Gender minority individuals, on average, experience higher rates of mental health problems. Mounting work suggests that gender minority stress (GMS) contributes to mental health outcomes in transgender/gender-nonconforming individuals. AIM: We assessed whether GMS decreased in transgender people after initiating gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT), and we identified social predictors and hormonal associations for GMS at 2 time points. METHODS: GMS was surveyed through self-report questionnaires tapping into proximal and distal stressors and coping constructs following the min

Evolution and social anxiety. The role of attraction, social competition, and social hierarchies.

If human social anxiety is not predominately about the fear of physical injury or attack, as it is in other animals, then, to understand human social anxiety (i.e., fear of evaluation), it is necessary to consider why certain types of relationships are so important. Why do humans need to court the good feelings of others and fear not doing so? And why, when people wish to appear attractive to others (e.g., to make friends, date a desired sexual partner, or give a good presentation), do some people become so overwhelmed with anxiety that they behave submissively and fearfully (which can be seen

Assessment of self-reported sexual behavior and condom use among female sex workers in India using a polling box approach: a preliminary report.

BACKGROUND: The accuracy of behavioral data related to risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections is prone to misreporting because of social desirability effects. Because computer-assisted approaches are not always feasible, a noncomputerized interview method for reducing social desirability effects is needed. The previous performance of alternative methods has been limited to aggregate data or constrained by the simplicity of dichotomous-only responses. We designed and tested a "polling box" method for case-attributable, multiple-response survey items in a low literacy population.

The role of dysphoric mood and gender in interpersonal responses to nondysphoric others.

There now exists a sizeable body of research on interpersonal responses to dysphoric individuals, yet relatively few studies have addressed responses of dysphoric individuals toward others. This study compared responses of dysphoric and nondysphoric individuals toward a nondysphoric person within same sex and opposite-sex dyads. Dysphoric and nondysphoric subjects did not differ in their desire for future interaction with their interactional partner. Dysphoric subjects reported a greater reduction in feelings of sadness, hostility, and impatience following the interaction, and among dysphoric

When transgressions become transparent: limiting family forms in assisted conception.

This article explores the social processes through which ideas about the family become translated into regulation and practice in assisted conception. Drawing on social problems literature, it is suggested that claims are made (by regulators, practitioners and others) about the desirability of certain family types and that forms of regulation occur when families transgress, in particularly obvious ways, the boundaries of those definitions. The apparently disparate examples of lesbian access to donor insemination and donor anonymity are brought together to illustrate the argument. It is also su
