The association between macro-level structural discrimination and alcohol outcomes: A systematic review.

Alcohol consumption is a major risk factor for death and disability, disproportionately harming disadvantaged groups. While a positive association between interpersonal discrimination and alcohol use is established, structural discrimination's impact remains unclear. We conducted a systematic review of the association between macro-level structural discrimination and alcohol consumption or related health outcomes. We searched four databases and grey literature, identifying 25 eligible studies, which considered racism (n = 11), sexism (n = 7), heterosexism (n = 4), and intersectional discrimina

Discrimination against adolescents with chronic diseases: a systematic review.

UNLABELLED: Discrimination is a social construct that discredits individuals based on attributes deemed socially undesirable. Adolescence is a period of transition where individuals acquire skills, values, and experiences that prepare them for adulthood. Adverse experiences during adolescence could particularly affect these acquisitions. For adolescents, discrimination is an experience that can lead to social and health consequences. Our hypothesis is that adolescents with chronic disease are more likely to be exposed to discrimination than their healthy peers. This systematic review aimed to

The Supreme court judgment on caste-based prescriptions in prison manuals - tip of the iceberg.

The Supreme Court of India had, in a public interest litigation based on an article by journalist Sukanya Shantha in The Wire, sharply criticised existing prison manuals for several clauses reinforcing the age-old injustices of caste-based discrimination and segregation. The Court found ample evidence of this discrimination, both in prison manuals and in the administration of Indian prisons, and instructed the authorities to ensure corrections within three months. While the Court's verdict is commendable and much needed, these violations only reflect the discrimination prevalent in the larger

An Intersectional Examination of How Class, Marital Status, and Age Shape Discrimination Among Black Women Who Are Postpartum.

INTRODUCTION: Intersectionality posits that multiple social categories (eg, race, gender, class) interact to create systems in which people experience discrimination differently. Among Black women, limited work has explored intersections beyond race, pregnancy status, and gender. This study compares experiences of racism and discrimination by multidimensional social category, inclusive of socioeconomic status (SES), marital status, and age, among Black women who are postpartum. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional survey data from 197 self-identified Black women aged 18 years or older with a

Gambling harms, stigmatisation and discrimination: A qualitative naturalistic forum analysis.

People who experience gambling harms commonly experience stigmatisation, which is detrimental to psychological wellbeing, and a significant barrier to help-seeking. While there have been efforts to challenge stigmatisation, there is little empirical evidence available to inform such initiatives. To address this gap in knowledge, we conducted a thematic analysis of naturalistic data in the form of posts made on online support forums by people with experience of gambling-related harm, in order to understand how they are stigmatised, and to identify barriers to help-seeking. Five main themes were

Mental Health Outcomes of Discrimination among College Students on a Predominately White Campus: A Prospective Study.

Racial discrimination is a social stressor harmful to mental health. In this paper, we explore the links between mental health and interpersonal discrimination-related social events, exposure to vicarious racism via social media, and rumination on racial injustices using a daily diary design. We utilize data from a racially diverse sample of 149 college students with 1,489 unique time observations at a large predominantly White university. Results show that interpersonal discrimination-related social events predicted greater self-reported anger, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and loneliness bot

A short period of early life oxytocin treatment rescues social behavior dysfunction via suppression of hippocampal hyperactivity in male mice.

Early sensory experiences interact with genes to shape precise neural circuits during development. This process is vital for proper brain function in adulthood. Neurological dysfunctions caused by environmental alterations and/or genetic mutation may share the same molecular or cellular mechanisms. Here, we show that early life bilateral whisker trimming (BWT) subsequently affects social discrimination in adult male mice. Enhanced activation of the hippocampal dorsal CA3 (dCA3) in BWT mice was observed during social preference tests. Optogenetic activation of dCA3 in naive mice impaired social

The Associations among Perceived Courtesy Stigma, Health and Social Behaviours in Family Members and Friends of People Who Use Substances: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

Background: The stigma and discrimination experienced by individuals with an alcohol/substance use disorder often extends to the family members and friends who provide care, which is known as courtesy stigma. This courtesy stigma can lead to isolation, poor mental health and might impact the quality-of-care these individuals provide. The aim of this study was to examine the frequency of experienced courtesy stigma/discrimination in individuals in a family support service for a loved one's substance use, and to examine any cross-sectional associations with changes in mood, health- and social-re

Perceived ageism, perceived preferential treatment based on age, and activity engagement in later life: findings from the 45 and up study.

BACKGROUND: Engagement in physical, social, and civic activities is central to successful aging. While age discrimination is known to negatively impact older adults' health, less is understood about how perceptions of age discrimination and preferential treatment interact with physical functioning to influence engagement. This study examined how these social perceptions interact with physical functioning to predict engagement among older Australians. METHODS: Data were drawn from Wave 4 of The 45 and Up Study (N = 11,719), a population-based cohort of adults aged 59-102 years. Engagement outc

Identifying Subgroups of Intersectional Stigma, Discrimination, and the Association with Mental Health Outcomes Among HIV-Positive Men Who Have Sex with Men: A Latent Class Analysis.

This study aimed to (1) identify latent classes of stigma and discrimination experiences among men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV; (2) examine the associations between class membership and mental health outcomes, and (3) investigate the moderating effects of social support and resilience. The study used the baseline (N = 224) and six-month follow-up data (N = 118) from a longitudinal cohort study on HIV and hypertension among African American and Asian Pacific American MSM in Hawai'i and Philadelphia from 2019 to 2023. Latent class analysis was conducted to characterize the patter

Links between ethnic discrimination, mental health, protective factors, and hair cortisol concentrations in asylum seekers living in Germany.

Objective: Asylum seekers often experience ethnic discrimination on the flight or in the host country, which may be associated with chronic stress and impaired mental health. Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, a known physiological correlate of chronic stress, can be assessed using hair cortisol concentrations (HCC). The present study aimed to investigate how different forms of perceived ethnic discrimination are associated with mental health outcomes, HCC, and protective factors in asylum seekers living in Germany. Methods: Somatic symptoms (PHQ-15), symptoms of posttrau

Ableism at the Bedside: People with Intellectual Disabilities and COVID-19.

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities have a higher risk of mortality from COVID-19 than the general population. Providers may assume that this is due to the burden of comorbidities for this population; however, the disparity in mortality persists even when controlling for comorbidities. We review the current policies and practices that may be contributing to this higher level of mortality. We contend that pervasive ableism among medical providers leads to a variation in the medical care options that are provided to people with intellectual disabilities and their families. Du

Medial prefrontal cortex neurons integrate amygdala and hypothalamic oxytocin signals to mediate stress-induced social alterations.

The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), a critical hub for social regulation, is highly vulnerable to stress. While mPFC dysfunction underlies stress-induced social alterations, the precise circuit mechanisms underlying remain elusive. Given mPFC's integration of stress signals from key nodes like the basolateral amygdala (BLA) and paraventricular hypothalamus (PVN), we hypothesized that enhanced BLA and PVN inputs disrupts mPFC's circuit dynamics, mediating social alterations after stress exposure. Here, using longitudinal in vivo Ca²⁺ imaging during repeated restraint stress, we observed post-s

A nationally representative survey of the impact of discrimination towards people with mental health problems: SANE's 2025 National Stigma Report Card.

AIMS: Reducing stigma and discrimination has been a priority in many national mental health policies for decades. Focusing efforts requires us to understand where this has the greatest impact on people with mental health problems. In 2024, we conducted a nationally representative survey that aimed to assess the burden of discrimination (as a product of frequency and impacts of experiences). Secondary aims were to quantify the types of discrimination experienced in different life domains and the sociodemographic and mental health problem characteristics of those experiencing higher burden. Intersectional Discrimination in HIV Healthcare Settings Among Persons with Diagnosed HIV in the United States, Medical Monitoring Project, 2018-2019.

Experiences with stigma and discrimination in healthcare settings are associated with negative health outcome for persons with HIV (PWH). PWH may experience discrimination due to the intersection of multiple marginalized social identities. Describing these experiences is important for informing interventions and strategies to reduce stigma and discrimination. We report experiences with discrimination in HIV healthcare settings attributed to multiple characteristics, e.g., sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, income, or social class, and/or injection drug use, among a nationally representative s
