The emergence of tolerance between distinct social groups is a central question in social evolution, with relevance to both nonhuman primates and early human societies. Ecological factors such as resource heterogeneity and social threats like bachelor male presence have each been proposed as drivers of intergroup proximity, but their combined effects remain unclear. We developed a spatially explicit agent-based model to examine how resource patchiness and bachelor threat jointly shape aggregation dynamics and intergroup tolerance among mixed-sex groups. In the model, groups forage across heter

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have been a persistent global challenge, with gonorrhea, caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, remaining an enduring threat. Despite its clinical and social importance, the historical evolution of gonorrhea-related knowledge and public perceptions in China have received limited scholarly attention. This paper addresses this gap by analyzing two interconnected threads: first, the formulation of medical knowledge, encompassing Traditional Chinese Medicine's (TCM) understanding of linzheng () and Western medicine's definition of gonorrhea; second, t

Chronic pain represents one of the most complex challenges of contemporary medicine. This narrative review critically analyzes the limitations of the traditional biomedical model in addressing chronic pain, highlighting how its reductionist vision is inadequate to effectively understand and treat this condition. The conceptual evolution of pain from a simple symptom to a codified "disease" is examined, highlighting the incongruities of this approach. The contribution of the bio-psycho-social model is discussed, recognizing its merits but also its applicative limits. Finally, the integration of

Physiological homeostasis is traditionally viewed as an individual process optimized through evolution to minimize the energetic costs of regulation. However, it remains unknown whether social proximity enhances the efficiency of homeostatic regulation, including in systems not traditionally viewed as socially sensitive. Glucose metabolism is one such system. In a set of preregistered experiments, we found that glucose homeostasis following a carbohydrate challenge is more efficient in a Social condition than an Alone condition, exhibiting lower perturbation amplitude and faster recovery (n =

We develop a site-bond percolation model, called PERCOVID, in order to describe the time evolution of all epidemics propagating through respiratory tract or by skin contacts in human populations. This model is based on a network of social relationships representing interconnected households experiencing governmental non-pharmaceutical interventions. As a very first testing ground, we apply our model to the understanding of the dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic in France from December 2019 up to December 2021. Our model shows the impact of lockdowns and curfews, as well as the influence of the

The HIV epidemic is similar to previous human epidemics, and our early responses to the HIV epidemic have likewise been similar. Furthermore, HIV is similar to other single-stranded RNA viruses in its evolution. Like other RNA viruses, HIV has a high mutation rate and thus evolves rapidly. This rapid evolution may make it difficult to develop a successful vaccine against HIV, and perhaps may also limit the usefulness of drugs because of the appearance of resistant mutants. However, most of the variation in HIV nucleotide sequences is neutral, not adaptive. Other viruses in the same retrovirus

Not only did COVID-19 give rise to a global pandemic, but also it resulted in an infodemic comprising misinformation, rumor, and propaganda. The consequences of this infodemic can erode public trust, impede the containment of the virus, and outlive the pandemic itself. The evolving and fragmented media landscape, particularly the extensive use of social media, is a crucial driver of the spread of misinformation. Focusing on the Chinese social media Weibo, we collected four million tweets, from December 9, 2019, to April 4, 2020, examining misinformation identified by the fact-checking platform

Online social networks have become primary means of communication. As they often exhibit undesirable effects such as hostility, polarization, or echo chambers, it is crucial to develop analytical tools that help us better understand them. In this paper we are interested in the evolution of discord in social networks. Formally, we introduce a method to calculate the probability of discord between any two agents in the multistate voter model with and without zealots. Our work applies to any directed, weighted graph with any finite number of possible opinions, allows for various update rates acro

There are important interactions between disease and organic evolution, between disease and cultural evolution, and between all three. Social behaviour influences disease and is influenced by it. Disease and disease mortality are woven into the complex of behavioural and physiological reactions to the stresses of overpopulation, which act to reduce population size. These principles are illustrated with reference to a number of diseases, including vitamin D imbalance, phenylketonuria, lactose intolerance, malaria, sickle cell anaemia, favism, plague, yellow fever, syphilis, ergot poisoning, kur

INTRODUCTION: Acoustic-verbal hallucinations (AVH) occur in children and adolescents without psychotic disorders. They are often associated with anxiety, thymic and behavioral disorders and a history of trauma, notably post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). AVH may be transient, but their persistence increases the risk of progression to a psychotic disorder. The aim of this study was to observe the links between markers of emotional and social cognition and the presence of AVH in children with PTSD, as well as the evolution of post-traumatic and psychotic symptoms.
METHODS: This was a prospec

Translating to the Community (T2C) is a social biorepository designed to advance new diagnostic tools and realign community-clinical processes, with the aim to mitigate the short- and long-term impacts of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) as well as prenatal alcohol exposure and its co-morbidities and behaviors. In this paper, we describe the evolution of this repository as a new translational partnership to advance a precision-medicine approach to FASD. Key to its evolution was a partnership between academic researchers, Indigenous communities, families, and a regional diagnostic clinic.

The evolutionary transition to eusociality in the solitary ancestors of social insects, like ants, termites, wasps and bees, may have been initiated by an environmental induction of group living. Plasticity in social behaviour in response to the environment can be found in facultatively social insects. However, it is currently unknown which environmental cues trigger the individual decision of an insect to nest solitarily or socially. Such environmental cues could be identified by exposing individuals of a facultatively social insect to experimentally manipulated cues in a controlled environme

While empirical evidence highlights the importance of punishment for cooperation in collective action, it remains disputed how responsible sanctions targeted predominantly at uncooperative subjects can evolve. Punishment is costly; in order to spread it typically requires local interactions, voluntary participation, or rewards. Moreover, theory and experiments indicate that some subjects abuse sanctioning opportunities by engaging in antisocial punishment (which harms cooperators), spiteful acts (harming everyone) or revenge (as a response to being punished). These arguments have led to the co

Although much depression may be dysfunctional, the capacity to experience normal depressive symptoms in response to certain adverse situations appears to have been shaped by natural selection. If this is true, then different kinds of situations may evoke different patterns of depressive symptoms that are well suited to solving the adaptive challenges specific to each situation. The authors called this the situation-symptom congruence hypothesis. They tested this hypothesis by asking 445 participants to identify depressive symptoms that followed a recent adverse situation. Guilt, rumination, fa

The basolateral amygdala complex (BNC) plays an important role in learning, memory, motivation, and social behaviour, with its dysfunction implicated in a wide variety of psychiatric disorders. Despite being one of the most intensely researched areas of the brain, much is still unknown about its microanatomical structure and function, relationships and evolutionary origins. In this review, we offer a multidisciplinary approach through the lens of comparative anatomy and evolutionary developmental studies to provide a better understanding of the anatomical and functional relationship between th

BACKGROUND: Cetacean brain size expansion is an enigmatic event in mammalian evolution, yet its genetic basis remains poorly explored. Here, all exons of the seven primary microcephaly (MCPH) genes that play key roles in size regulation during brain development were investigated in representative cetacean lineages.
RESULTS: Sequences of MCPH2-7 genes were intact in cetaceans but frameshift mutations and stop codons was identified in MCPH1. Extensive positive selection was identified in four of six intact MCPH genes: WDR62, CDK5RAP2, CEP152, and ASPM. Specially, positive selection at CDK5RAP2

Social support usually decreases following HIV diagnosis, and decreased support is related to worsening mental health. We investigated the evolution of social support after HIV diagnosis and its relationship to anxiety, depression, and resilience, and sought to develop a social support prediction model. There were 119 newly diagnosed Spanish speakers who participated in this longitudinal study, completing measures of social support, internalized stigma, disclosure concerns, degree of disclosure, coping, anxiety, depression, and resilience. Bivariate associations and multiple regression analyse

Fear and avoidance of individual phobic situations were measured in 1168 patients with panic disorder suffering current attacks. Correlation and principal-components analyses give components of agoraphobia, illness phobia, and social phobia in panic disorder. Agoraphobia does not stand out so clearly as illness phobia and social phobia as a separate factor; 'fear of open spaces' shows some separation from other agoraphobic situations. Frequency of panic attacks and changes associated with their remission have no special relationship to agoraphobia. Closer attention to social and illness phobia

Stone formation in the urinary tract affects about 5-10% of the population in industrialized countries, although it is very rare in other countries such as Greenland or Japan. The high incidence and recurrence rate contribute to making the urolithiasis a serious social problem. Nowadays, urolithiasis must be considered a 'disease in evolution' for several reasons, such as epidemiological changes, evolution of the methods used for diagnosis, and the treatment and prophylaxis of the population considered 'at risk' of stone disease. Some features of stone disease have changed over the last few ye
