Homeless persons' experiences of health- and social care: A systematic integrative review.

Homelessness is associated with high risks of morbidity and premature death. Many interventions aimed to improve physical and mental health exist, but do not reach the population of persons experiencing homelessness. Despite the widely reported unmet healthcare needs, more information about the barriers and facilitators that affect access to care for persons experiencing homelessness is needed. A systematic integrative review was performed to explore experiences and needs of health- and social care for persons experiencing homelessness. The following databases were searched: AMED, ASSIA, Acade

Integrating Social Media Monitoring Into Public Health Emergency Response Operations.

Social media monitoring for public health emergency response and recovery is an essential response capability for any health department. The value of social media for emergency response lies not only in the capacity to rapidly communicate official and critical incident information, but as a rich source of incoming data that can be gathered to inform leadership decision-making. Social media monitoring is a function that can be formally integrated into the Incident Command System of any response agency. The approach to planning and required resources, such as staffing, logistics, and technology,

Integrating intention and context: assessing social cognition in adults with Asperger syndrome.

Deficits in social cognition are an evident clinical feature of the Asperger syndrome (AS). Although many daily life problems of adults with AS are related to social cognition impairments, few studies have conducted comprehensive research in this area. The current study examined multiple domains of social cognition in adults with AS assessing the executive functions (EF) and exploring the intra and inter-individual variability. Fifteen adult's diagnosed with AS and 15 matched healthy controls completed a battery of social cognition tasks. This battery included measures of emotion recognition,

Predictors of gains in social functioning after cognitive remediation in schizophrenia: Results from the multicenter ISST (Integrated Social Cognition and Social Skills Therapy) trial.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) is an evidence-based behavioral intervention that enhances functional outcomes in schizophrenia patients by improving cognition. However, not all patients benefit equally from CRT, and predictors of real-world functional improvement are poorly understood. This study aimed to identify patient-related baseline predictors of functional improvement by evaluating two distinct CRT approaches targeting different types of cognition: social cognition (Integrated Social Cognition and Social Skills Training, ISST) and neurocognition (Neurocognitive Remediati

Diverse social environments and 10-year all-cause mortality in a cohort of historically excluded racial/ethnic older adults: A latent class analysis of social integration.

PURPOSE: The association between social integration and mortality in older adults from historically excluded groups may not align with the patterns observed in predominately white samples. We modeled latent groups of social integration and their association with 10-year all-cause mortality in a cohort of older adults from historically excluded racial/ethnic groups. METHODS: In a sub-sample of a national cohort study of older adults, we used latent class analysis to model social integration using ten item indicators spanning couple status, network characteristics, and neighborhood and communit

The role of housing stability in predicting social capital: Exploring social support and psychological integration as mediators for individuals with histories of homelessness and vulnerable housing.

Social capital is a collective asset important for individual and population well-being. Individuals who experience homelessness may face barriers in accessing social capital due to health challenges, small social networks, and social exclusion. Data from a 4-year longitudinal study was used to determine if housing stability predicted greater social capital and if this relationship was mediated by social support and psychological integration for a sample of 855 homeless and vulnerably housed participants living in three Canadian cities. Findings showed that housing stability was not associated

Sleep disturbance and longitudinal risk of inflammation: Moderating influences of social integration and social isolation in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study.

Both sleep disturbance and social isolation increase the risk for morbidity and mortality. Systemic inflammation is suspected as a potential mechanism of these associations. However, the complex relationships between sleep disturbance, social isolation, and inflammation have not been examined in a population-based longitudinal study. This study examined the longitudinal association between sleep disturbance and systemic inflammation, and the moderating effects of social isolation on this association. The CARDIA study is a population-based longitudinal study conducted in four US cities. Sleep d

Leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Integration of Social Determinants of Health in Emergency Medicine: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) are critical drivers of health disparities and patient outcomes. However, accessing and collecting patient-level SDOH data can be operationally challenging in the emergency department (ED) clinical setting, requiring innovative approaches. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review examines the potential of AI and data science for modeling, extraction, and incorporation of SDOH data specifically within EDs, further identifying areas for advancement and investigation. METHODS: We conducted a standardized search for studies published between 2015 and 2022,

Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) curriculum integration and sustainability: Social work and nursing faculty perspectives.

BACKGROUND: The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has funded grants to universities to provide training and conduct research on the dissemination of Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) to health care professionals. However, when it comes to integrating SBIRT content into an existing curriculum, difficulties can arise. When there is so much content already in the curriculum, adding more can be challenging. Additionally, some faculty believe that course curricula should be driven by the expertise and knowledge of faculty, not by oppor

Depression in later-life Puerto Rican primary care patients: the role of illness, stress, social integration, and religiosity.

BACKGROUND: Older Puerto Ricans belong to two rapidly growing demographic groups known to have high rates of depression: the aging and Hispanic populations. Studies of depression in Puerto Ricans have primarily focused on the impact of demographic factors and health. This study expands previous research, examining the relationships between depression and social stressors, social support, and religiosity, for Puerto Rican primary care patients aged 50 and older. PATIENTS: Participants included 303 Puerto Ricans from six primary care clinics in a northeastern city. METHODS: Patients completed

Academic and social integration on campus among sexual minority students: the impacts of psychological and experiential campus climate.

A heterosexist campus climate can increase risk for mental health problems for sexual minority students; however, the relationship between campus climate for sexual minorities and academic outcomes remains understudied. Using a sample of sexual minority respondents extracted from a campus climate survey conducted at a large university in the Midwest, we examine relationships between multiple dimensions of psychological and experiential campus climate for sexual minorities with academic integration (academic disengagement, grade-point average [GPA]) and social integration (institutional satisfa

Integrated Care for Serious Mental Illness, Physical Health Needs, and Social Services.

As health care transitions from fee-for-service (FFS) to value-based care (VBC), models that effectively integrate mental and physical health are essential, particularly considering the unsustainable rise of health care expenditures and less-than-desired outcomes of FFS. Mental health represents a significant and growing component of health care. Mental Health Cooperative (MHC), a Tennessee-based integrated health care system, has implemented a patient-centric integrated care model that addresses both behavioral and physical health needs for patients with behavioral health severe mental illnes

Impact of a university teaching of integrative medicine on the social representations of undergraduate medical students.

Integrative medicine, need to be inoffensive, effective, and of quality (World Health Organization). In 2010, the American Society of Teachers of Family Medicine approved 19 competencies for teaching integrative medicine to residents. In 2018, the University of Rennes created a course: "Integrative Medicine and Complementary Therapies". Up until then, the only feedback from the courses was the students' opinions. We investigated the impact on medical students' social representation. We performed a sociological analysis of students' social representations before and after the course. The social

Multi-user upper limb rehabilitation training system integrating social interaction.

COVID-19 causes persistent symptoms such as weakness and myasthenia in most patients. Due to the cross-infection of COVID-19, the traditional face-to-face rehabilitation services are risky for the elderly. To ensure that the elderly in urgent need of rehabilitation services receive training while minimizing the disturbance of the COVID-19 pandemic on their social activities. We have improved the existing virtual upper limb training system, and added a social factor to the system. Seniors with upper limb rehabilitation needs can use the system to compete or collaborate with others for training.

Social cognition in Parkinson's disease: a comprehensive systematic review and integrative conceptual framework.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized not only by motor symptoms but also by non-motor impairments, including deficits in social cognition (SC), defined as the ability to recognize, interpret, and respond to others' emotions, intentions, and behaviors. This systematic review synthesizes evidence on SC in PD, focusing on three core aspects: emotion recognition, empathy/Theory of Mind (ToM), and social problem-solving. METHODS: We included 191 behavioral and neuroimaging studies based on a PRISMA-guided search of four databases. RESULTS: The literature review findings reveale
