Associations among social isolation, living alone, and cardiovascular mortality: The Otassha study.

OBJECTIVES: Living alone is potentially associated with cardiovascular mortality; however, the effects of social interactions have not been fully considered. This study examined whether social isolation and living alone were independently associated with cardiovascular mortality and whether living alone modified the association between social isolation and cardiovascular mortality in community-dwelling older adults. STUDY DESIGN: Community-dwelling older adults residing in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo, who participated in the postal survey, were enrolled. Social isolation was defined based on the fre

Loneliness, social isolation, and health-related quality of life in older adults.

Social variables have been associated with health status, especially in older people. However, it is unknown how loneliness and social isolation are differentially associated with physical and mental components of health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We aimed to examine this association, overall and by sex. We used data obtained from 1808 community-dwelling individuals older than 65 years participating in the Seniors-ENRICA 2 cohort. Baseline phase was conducted between December 2015 and June 2017, and then a two-year follow-up period was considered. Loneliness was assessed using the three-

Loneliness, Social Isolation, and Chronic Disease Outcomes in Adults: A Systematic Review.

Social disconnection, including loneliness and social isolation, is increasingly recognized as an important social determinant of adult health, but its relationship with chronic disease-related outcomes remains dispersed across disease areas and study designs. This systematic review aimed to synthesize evidence on the associations of loneliness and social isolation with chronic disease-related outcomes among adults in community, primary care, outpatient, registry-based, and population-based settings. Social Isolation and Health Outcomes in Japan: A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Social isolation is an important social determinant of health, but its relationship with health-related outcomes remains incompletely understood. This study examined whether structural social isolation is associated with subjective health, symptom burden, chronic disease diagnoses, and healthcare-seeking behaviors in a nationwide Japanese population. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional study using data from the 2024 Japan coronavirus disease 2019 and Society Internet Survey, including adults aged 18-79 years. Social isolation was assessed using the Lubben Social N

Pharmacological rescue of isolation-induced social and neurochemical deficits in Drosophila melanogaster.

Social isolation (ISO) is a major risk factor for mood disorders, reflected in disrupted neurochemistry and social behavior. To test whether five days of ISO induce a depression-like state in male Drosophila melanogaster, we measured brain monoamines and social interaction networks (SINs), focusing on dopamine (DA) and octopamine (OA), key regulators of motivation and reward. ISO reduced DA, OA, and tyramine (TA) while increasing acetylcholine, and produced disorganized SINs marked by weaker, shorter interactions, reduced clustering and centrality, and hyperactive, uncoordinated locomotion. Repeated low doses of lipopolysaccharide exacerbate behavioral changes induced by social isolation.

Social isolation (SI) due to Coronavirus disease 2019 had a substantial impact on mental health, increasing cases of major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety. Young individuals are notably affected, as research indicates that inflammatory responses can trigger mental health disorders, with chronic stress worsening this effect. Thus, the primary objective of this study was to investigate the combination of SI with repeated low doses of an inflammation inducer in young mice on behavioral and molecular changes in adulthood. For this, young Swiss male mice were housed in groups or isolated and

Prevalence and Correlates of Social Isolation Among Older Adults in Subsidized Housing.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Social isolation is an increasing public health concern. Older residents in subsidized housing may be susceptible to isolation given high rates of chronic illness/disabilities, low income, and living alone. This cross-sectional study examined correlates of social isolation among over 3,000 older adults from nearly 100 subsidized housing communities across the United States. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Respondent Lubben Social Network Scale-6 scores, demographic data, and health information were collected in 2019 by a nonprofit housing organization and linked to the

Preference for solitude paradox: The psychological influence of social isolation despite preference.

BACKGROUND: Although a preference for solitude (PS) may mitigate the negative effects of social isolation (SI) owing to the enjoyment of time alone, its impact on mental health and its underlying factors remain unclear. METHODS: An Internet survey was conducted with 9000 individuals aged 20-79 years in September 2023 and the analyses were performed across three generations. SI was defined as contact with non-cohabitating family members or relatives and friends/neighbors less than once a week. The PS scale, which was used to assess whether a person preferred spending time alone, stratified res

Neighborhood, social isolation and mental health outcome among older people in Ghana.

OBJECTIVE: Loneliness and living alone have been strongly related to mental health but limited empirical evidence of these relationships exists among older people in Ghana. We examine the pathways of independent and interactive impacts of loneliness and living alone on psychological distress (PD) risk among older people in Ghana and to investigate whether the associations are moderated by neighborhood characteristics. METHODS: Data were analyzed for 1200 community-dwelling adults aged ≥50 years from a 2016/2017 Aging, Health, Psychological Wellbeing and Health-seeking Behavior Study. Mental h

Increased drinking following social isolation rearing: implications for polydipsia associated with schizophrenia.

Primary polydipsia, excessive drinking without known medical cause, is especially associated with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. We used animal models of schizophrenia-like symptoms to examine the effects on schedule-induced polydipsia: post-weaning social isolation rearing, subchronic MK-801 treatment (an NMDA-receptor antagonist) or the two combined. Male, Sprague-Dawley rats reared in groups or in isolation beginning at postnatal day 21 were further divided to receive subchronic MK-801 (0.5 mg/kg twice daily) or saline for 7 days beginning on postnatal day 62. Following a 4-day withdrawal pe

Effects of social isolation and environmental enrichment on atherosclerosis in ApoE-/- mice.

Social support and a stimulating environment have been suggested to reduce stress reactions and cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to assess the role of environmental enrichment and social interaction for development of atherosclerosis in atherosclerosis prone mice. Male ApoE-/- mice were divided into four groups and followed during 20 weeks: (i) enriched environment (E, n=12), (ii) deprived environment (ED, n=12), (iii) enriched environment with exercise (E-Ex, n=12) and (iv) socially deprived by individual housing (SD, n=10). Plasma lipid and cytokine concentrations were measured

Proximity to high streets, social isolation and social support in British adolescents: A longitudinal analysis of sociospatial influences on social connectedness using geospatial data.

High streets have been shown to be central to socio-economic activity, given their diverse residential, leisure, and commercial activities. This study explores the link between adolescent social isolation and proximity to, and land use mix in, high streets. Hypothesising that greater distance from high streets might increase social isolation, measured via social activities, friend contact frequency, and social support, we used multilevel modelling with data from the Millennium Cohort Study. We did not observe a relationship between proximity to high streets and these social isolation indicator

Social Isolation and Social Support Influence Health Service Utilisation and Survival after a Cardiovascular Disease Event: A Systematic Review.

Both cardiovascular disease (CVD) and social health carry high health and economic burdens. We undertook a systematic review to investigate the association between social isolation, low social support, and loneliness with health service utilisation and survival after a CVD event among people living in Australia and New Zealand. Four electronic databases were systematically searched for the period before June 2020. Two reviewers undertook the title/abstract screen. One reviewer undertook a full-text screen and data extraction. A second author checked data extraction. Of 756 records, 25 papers m

Using Mobile Sensing to Test Clinical Models of Depression, Social Anxiety, State Affect, and Social Isolation Among College Students.

BACKGROUND: Research in psychology demonstrates a strong link between state affect (moment-to-moment experiences of positive or negative emotionality) and trait affect (eg, relatively enduring depression and social anxiety symptoms), and a tendency to withdraw (eg, spending time at home). However, existing work is based almost exclusively on static, self-reported descriptions of emotions and behavior that limit generalizability. Despite adoption of increasingly sophisticated research designs and technology (eg, mobile sensing using a global positioning system [GPS]), little research has integr
