Who knows about U = U? Social positionality and knowledge about the (un)transmissibility of HIV from people with undetectable viral loads.

"U = U" is the principle that HIV is untransmittable from people living with an undetectable HIV viral-load. Wide-spread knowledge about U = U is believed to produce public health benefit by reducing HIV-related stigma - promoting wellbeing for people living with HIV. Therefore, we examined the diffusion of U = U with respect to the social position of sexual and gender minority men (SGMM). Participants were SGMM recruited from 16 LGBTQ2S+ pride festivals across Canada. Social position was measured using an index assessing whether participants were (a) trans, (b) a person of colour, (c) Indigen

"What Has Kept Me Alive": Transgender Communities and Support.

Transgender (trans) people in the United States experience staggering marginalization. To survive, trans people turn to their communities for support. In this study, I use in-depth interviews with 10 trans people living in "Townsville" to explore the social support trans and LGBTQ communities provide to trans members. What types of support are available? How does this support enable survival? How do differences in communities influence support? I found four types of support: emotional, institutional, bodily, and financial. The focus and composition of communities determined the types of suppor

Performative Gratitude - A Barrier to Understanding the Needs of Older Migrants Experiencing Homelessness in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Canada's aging population faces a growing homelessness crisis, affecting groups such as older migrants. Older migrants experiencing homelessness may encounter intersecting forms of housing precarity, exclusion, and marginalization that shape their relationships with the host country and service systems. OBJECTIVE: Using a postcolonial lens, this study explores how older migrants experiencing homelessness navigate housing precarity and relate to the host country, with particular attention to the role of gratitude in their experiences of housing and support. METHODS: The study draw

Climate change-related weather emergencies, aging and inequalities among racialized older adults: An intersectional climate justice framework informed scoping review.

As global aging accelerates alongside intensifying climate disruptions, older adults face growing exposure to extreme weather events that threaten their health and well-being. Yet, the experiences of racialized older adults, categorized as those who are non-White or non-Indigenous who often inhabit the intersection of social and ecological shaped by social marginalization, economic disadvantage, and other factors remain insufficiently understood. Guided by an Intersectional Climate Justice lens, this scoping review examined how racialized older adults across diverse contexts experience and res

Weathering the STORM and Forecasting Equity for Older Black Women: Expanding Social Determinants of Health.

A strong body of evidence indicates that social determinants impact health. While this research has identified a range of risk factors for health, health equity goals require recalibration further "upstream" towards structural drivers of health and aging inequities. Recognizing how systems of power and chronic exposures are embodied and facilitate differential risks and opportunities is important for expanding research at the gender-race-age nexus. Specifically, adopting a structural aging approach can help contextualize health outcomes for older Black women. Drawing from previous research, we

[Severe marginality in the Como area. Homelessness phenomenon and nursing care.].

Homelessness is a growing problem. These people face huge inequalities and frequent hospitalizations, often lacking social support. The condition is one of extreme poverty and affects public health care costs. The risk of mortality and morbidity is high. Together with the synergy between health care institutions and targeted policies, Third Sector Associations are fundamental. The nurse is crucial in responding to the needs of the most fragile individuals by ensuring an integrated approach to care. The Como Services for Serious Marginalization are concerned with taking charge of and satisfying

Neglected diseases and ethnic minorities in the Western Pacific Region exploring the links.

Ethnic minority groups (EMGs) are often subject to exclusion, marginalization and poverty. These characteristics render them particularly vulnerable to neglected diseases, a diverse group of diseases that comprise bacteria, ecto-parasites, fungi, helminths and viruses. Despite the health policy relevance, only little is known of the epidemiological profile of neglected diseases among EMGs. We reviewed country data from Australia, Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam and found several overlaps between regions with high proportions of EMG population a

Spatial analysis of socioeconomic data and its relationship with illicit crops in Nariño-Colombia.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to eradicate poverty and promote sustainable development; however, socioeconomic disparities persist globally, particularly in Colombia. With a Gini index of 0.556 in 2022, Colombia ranks among the most unequal countries in Latin America, with its southwest region of Nariño facing severe socioeconomic challenges. Concurrently, Nariño registers the highest levels of coca cultivation in Colombia, accounting for 65% of national cocaine production, reflecting the region's precarious conditions. This study investigates the extent to which the spatial dis

Enabling spaces for (varied) co-existence.

For people in homelessness, access to social services may appear difficult and alienating, which often contributes to poor health and a risk of accelerated marginalization. Historically, day centres for people in homelessness have been characterized by an emphasis on providing refuge and momentary restitution, accommodating urgent basic needs. In this article, we present a case study of the design of a new day centre in Denmark that aspires to move beyond the historical place-for-being. Rather, the new day centre is to be a place-for-being-and-becoming, focusing on bridging the varied needs of

Conceptual knowledge and sensitization on Asperger's syndrome based on the constructivist approach through virtual reality.

The immense capabilities provided by virtual reality for enhancing empathy and altering social behaviors, make it possible to use virtual reality for the promotion of the understanding between individuals. A social issue that needs to be addressed is the discrimination and marginalization of people with Asperger's syndrome (AS) from the working force, stemming from the lack of recognition and justification of their oddities. In this paper, the effectiveness of a virtual reality simulation, raising awareness on this specific issue, is evaluated. Awareness is a term used in this research to refe

Parenting and social support: Caregiver strain in social context for low-income Black mothers.

Parents of children with mental health needs experience unique caregiver strain. Black mothers report reducing employment and missing workdays due to their children's behavioral difficulties and concern regarding their greater probability (compared with White children) of being diagnosed with behavioral problems, particularly their sons. Research highlights social support as a cultural asset serving a protective role in Black families. Literature on caregiver strain and support has been primarily limited to surveys that do not adequately capture the complexity, context, richness, and nuance of

Social network assessment in community-dwelling older persons: results from a study of three European populations.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In clinical practice, the status of living alone is often used as the only measure describing an older person's social network. We evaluated whether additional use of a brief social network measure provides relevant additional information in relation to social support and engagement. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey of 6982 community- dwelling adults 65 years or older living in London, UK; Hamburg, Germany; and Solothurn, Switzerland. Data were collected using the self-administered multidimensional Health Risk Appraisal Questionnaire. Multivariate models were used to analy

Evaluating associations between social risks and health care utilization in patients with chronic low back pain.

INTRODUCTION: Care and outcomes for patients with chronic low back pain (cLBP) are influenced by the social risk factors that they experience. Social risk factors such as food insecurity and housing instability have detrimental effects on patient health and wellness, healthcare outcomes, and health disparities. OBJECTIVES: This retrospective cross-sectional study examined how social risk factors identified in unstructured and structured electronic health record (EHR) data for 1,295 patients with cLBP were associated with health care utilization. We also studied the impact of social risk facto

The symbolic meanings and experience of place among residents in public housing awaiting relocation in Baltimore, Maryland.

Public housing in the United States is often depicted as areas of decay and using racialized tropes about low-income communities of color. Despite these negative portrayals, residents of public housing often characterize their place as meaningful homes where they engage in place-making and community-building to challenge their social marginalization. The presence of strong connections to community and place among residents may help explain why public housing redevelopment programs focused on demolition and forced relocation have led to mixed results for improved mental and social well-being. Dietary Intake and the Neighbourhood Environment in the BC Generations Project.

Poor diet is a major risk factor for many chronic diseases including cancer. Understanding broader contextual factors that influence dietary intake is important for making tangible progress towards improving diet at the population level. This study investigated neighbourhood social and built environment factors and fruit and vegetable intake among ~28,000 adults aged 35−69 years within the BC Generations Project. Daily fruit and vegetable intake was categorized according to guidelines (≥5 servings/day vs. <5 servings/day). Geospatial characteristics included walkability, greenness, marginaliza

Advancing Nursing Practice and Health Equity for Marginalized People Living With HIV in Canada: An Intersectionality-Informed Policy Commentary.

Despite substantial advances in HIV treatment, persistent structural barriers and inequitable policy frameworks continue to disproportionately affect marginalized populations, perpetuating poor health outcomes. This article critically examines how public health policies and institutional practices fail to account for intersecting social identities, exacerbating compounded disadvantage among groups such as men who have sex with men, transgender individuals, sex workers, people who inject drugs, and racialized populations. Using Hankivsky Intersectionality-Based Policy Analysis framework, the an
