The Journal of adolescent health : official publication of the Society for Adolescent Medicine2020eng
PURPOSE: Peer relationship problems are associated with pain complaints; however, experimental data linking the two are lacking. The purpose of this study was to determine whether brief social exclusion influences pain processing in healthy adolescents.
METHODS: A total of 40 adolescents were randomly assigned to a social exclusion or social inclusion/control condition; they then completed a cold pressor task and provided pain ratings. Two weeks later, participants provided ratings for their memory for pain during the cold pressor (nanalyzed = 33).
RESULTS: Social exclusion had no immediate

Background and aims: There is evidence to suggest that biogenetic explanations for symptoms of mental disorders have become increasingly popular. Research suggests that such explanations provokes mixed blessings: biological explanations may reduce blame but also encourage prognostic pessimism and promote perceptions of pharmacological treatment over psychotherapy. The goal of this study was to evaluate the impact of different causal explanations on social anxiety disorder.Method: About 205 adults completed an experiment where they read a vignette describing an individual with social anxiety di

AIM: To explore the perception of social support in individuals living with a diabetic foot in order to influence future service delivery in management of similar individuals.
METHOD: A purposive sample of eight participants with a diabetic foot were recruited from a public podiatry service in Tasmania, Australia. A hermeneutic phenomenology qualitative approach was used with individual semi-structured interviews conducted using an interview guide designed to gain insight into five pre-determined measures of social support. Hybrid thematic analysis was used to produce the final results.

BACKGROUND: Traditional in-person cardiac rehabilitation has substantial benefits for cardiac patients, which are offset by poor attendance. The rapid increase in social media use in older adults provides an opportunity to reach patients who are eligible for cardiac rehabilitation but unable to attend traditional face-to-face groups. However, there is a paucity of research on cardiac patients' experiences and perspectives on using social media to support their health.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe cardiac rehabilitation patients' experiences in using social media in general

We examined how different types of mental illness elicited varying levels of predicted criminality and compared this with factors which might also elicit a negative response, specifically, a criminal history and social disadvantage. A sample of 243 participants undertook an anonymous, online experiment. Each participant was exposed to one of six vignettes: three involved mental illness (schizophrenia, depression/anxiety, or alcohol dependency); two in which socio-economic background was manipulated; and a control. The impact of mental illness, history of criminality and social disadvantage on

Discussing the medical importance of the topic, the necessity of cooperation with social-scientific disciplines is demonstrated. Reflecting some relevant psychological theories, an experimental concept for analysing the interpersonal communication with persons suffering from skin-diseases is developed. It is a purpose of this investigation, not only to get the estimations of persons with and without skin-diseases but also the opinion which the other group is supposed to have. It was assumed that the state of health in persons with dermatoses is depending on these supposed estimations by the so

OBJECTIVE: Chronic illness is interpreted not only in terms of personal symptoms, but also through broader systems of meaning concerning family continuity and future generations. The present research introduces Intergenerational Taint Perception (ITP), a psychological meaning system through which individuals understand their illness as having symbolic and relational implications for their family line and descendants, independent of confirmed biological transmission.
METHODS AND MEASURES: Across three studies with patient samples in China (total N = 942), we examined the emergence, structure,

OBJECTIVE: Emerging adults (18-25 years) report high instances of heavy episodic drinking and related problems; however, less is known about the relation of risk perception and alcohol-related outcomes, especially as it relates to social drinking in trans and gender diverse (TGD) individuals.
METHOD: To capture a realistic portrayal of real-time social drinking decision-making, we used the Collegiate-Simulated Intoxication Digital Elicitation (C-SIDE) to collect behavioral willingness ratings for alcohol in a variety of simulated situations from 273 18-25 year olds in the United States (187 c

PURPOSE: The present study was designed to investigate the perception of unilateral cleft lip (UCL) repair scar using an image of an adolescent and eye-tracking technology.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Frontal and oblique views of an image of an adolescent with a unilateral upper lip scar result of a corrective surgery. Eighty-five laypeople respondents were divided into three groups: Group A (15-44 years of age); Group B (45-59 years of age); and Group C (≥ 60 years of age). Gaze tracking was carried out to assess the location on the image of greatest fixation, to create dot maps and to follow the

Despite the key role that decoding of social-perceptual cues from faces plays in interpersonal communication, it is only recently that the potential of prefrontal cortex damage to disrupt this ability has been recognized. In fact, few studies to date had assessed whether the ability to identify the state of mind of others from the whole or part of the face is disrupted after prefrontal cortex damage and whether these two abilities are associated and share overlapped neural systems. In the present study, 30 patients with focal prefrontal lesions and 30 matched control subjects were assessed on

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Objectively measure the ability of facial reanimation surgery to normalize the appearance of facial paralysis using eye-tracking technology.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective randomized controlled experiment.
METHODS: An eye-tracker system was used to record the eye-movement patterns, called scanpaths, of 86 naïve observers gazing at pictures of paralyzed faces (House-Brackmann IV-VI), smiling and in repose; before and after facial reanimation surgery; as well as normal, nonparalyzed faces. Observers gazed at each face for 10 seconds. Fixation durations for all predefined faci

BACKGROUND: Social cognition is an important aspect of social behavior in humans. Social cognitive deficits are associated with neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. In this study we examine the neural substrates of social cognition and face processing in a group of healthy young adults to examine the neural substrates of social cognition.
METHODS: Fifty-seven undergraduates completed a battery of social cognition tasks and were assessed with electroencephalography (EEG) during a face-perception task. A subset (N=22) were administered a face-perception task during functional magn

The perception of eye gaze plays a pivotal role in human social interactions, which even occurs outside conscious awareness. However, whether such nonconscious gaze perception is susceptible to top-down cognitive processes, like working memory (WM), remains unclear. Using a delayed match-to-sample paradigm, we investigated the WM modulation on the perception of eye gaze rendered invisible through the continuous flash suppression (CFS) technique. Our results revealed that the suppressed eye gaze gained prioritized access to consciousness when its direction matched that of the face held in WM. T

Digital platforms have become a dominant source of ophthalmic health information, shaping how patients understand visual symptoms, form treatment expectations, and make decisions before clinical evaluation occurs. Although increased access to online content has the potential to improve patient engagement and reach underserved populations, ophthalmology remains uniquely vulnerable to misinformation due to its visually driven nature, reliance on image-based interpretation, and limited availability of high-quality, evidence-based, ophthalmic content within high-engagement digital spaces. Across p

BACKGROUND: In November 2018, a Chinese researcher reported that his team had applied clustered regularly interspaced palindromic repeats or associated protein 9 to delete the gene C-C chemokine receptor type 5 from embryos and claimed that the 2 newborns would have lifetime immunity from HIV infection, an event referred to as #GeneEditedBabies on social media platforms. Although this event stirred a worldwide debate on ethical and legal issues regarding clinical trials with embryonic gene sequences, the focus has mainly been on academics and professionals. However, how the public, especially

Although the fear of being scrutinized by others in a social context is a key symptom in social anxiety disorder (SAD), the neural processes underlying the perception of scrutiny have not previously been studied by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We used fMRI to map brain activation during a perception-of-scrutiny task in 20 SAD patients and 20 controls. A multi-dimensional analytic approach was used. Scrutiny perception was mediated by activation of the medial frontal cortex, insula-operculum region and cerebellum, and the additional recruitment of visual areas and the thalamus

BACKGROUND: For sustainable and healthy relationships with pets, attributing some degree of human abilities to the pet (anthropomorphization) might be necessary. We hypothesize that the tendency to anthropomorphize pet animals is related to relationship behaviors (communication and making up) and the experience of social support. Perceiving the pet in a human social role (e.g., family member or friend) might mediate this relationship.
METHOD: Associations were tested in a mixed sample of cat and dog owners by means of multiple linear regression, moderation, and (moderated) mediation analyses.

BACKGROUND: Depression can be debilitating, as well as a risk factor for self-harm and suicide. Social rank theory (SRT) suggests depression stems from feelings of defeat and entrapment that ensue from experiencing oneself to be of lower rank than others. This study aims to review the literature investigating the relationship between self-perceptions of social rank and depressive symptoms or suicidal ideation/behaviour.
METHODS: A keyword search of three psychological and medical databases was completed (Psychinfo, Medline, Web of Knowledge). Studies were quality assessed using established cr
