Brain connectomics predict response to treatment in social anxiety disorder.

We asked whether brain connectomics can predict response to treatment for a neuropsychiatric disorder better than conventional clinical measures. Pre-treatment resting-state brain functional connectivity and diffusion-weighted structural connectivity were measured in 38 patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) to predict subsequent treatment response to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). We used a priori bilateral anatomical amygdala seed-driven resting connectivity and probabilistic tractography of the right inferior longitudinal fasciculus together with a data-driven multivoxel pattern a

Social Anxiety, Affect, Cortisol Response and Performance on a Speech Task.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety is characterized by increased emotional reactivity to social stimuli, but results of studies focusing on affective reactions of socially anxious subjects in the situation of social exposition are inconclusive, especially in the case of endocrinological measures of affect. SAMPLING AND METHODS: This study was designed to examine individual differences in endocrinological and affective reactions to social exposure as well as in performance on a speech task in a group of students (n = 44) comprising subjects with either high or low levels of social anxiety. Measures of

Cognitive Flexibility and Social Responsiveness in Children and Adolescents with Tourette Syndrome.

This study examined cognitive flexibility and social responsiveness in children and adolescents with Tourette Syndrome (TS). Thirty one subjects with TS were compared to 32 age-matched healthy controls. Assessments included semi-structured interviews to assess psychopathology, parent-rated Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) and a brief neuropsychological battery selected as measures of cognitive flexibility. Completion time for both Trail Making Tests (TMT-A and TMT-B) were significantly longer for TS group than controls, however the difference in perseverative errors on Wisconsin Card Sorting

Predictors of response to an attention modification program in generalized social phobia.

OBJECTIVE: At least 3 randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind studies have supported the efficacy of computerized attention modification programs (AMPs) in reducing symptoms of anxiety in patients diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. In this study we examined patient characteristics that predicted response to AMP in a large sample of individuals diagnosed with generalized social phobia. METHOD: The sample comprised 112 individuals seeking treatment for generalized social phobia who completed a randomized clinical trial comparing AMP (n = 55) with a placebo condition (i.e., attention contr

Adaptive plasticity of mammalian sperm production in response to social experience.

Sperm competition theory predicts that males should invest prudently in ejaculates according to levels of female promiscuity. Males may therefore be sensitive to cues in their social environment associated with sexual competition, and tailor investment in sperm production accordingly. We tested this idea experimentally for the first time, to our knowledge, in a mammal by comparing reproductive traits of male house mice (Mus musculus domesticus) that had experienced contrasting encounter regimes with potential sexual competitors. We found that daily sperm production and numbers of sperm in the

Stigma in the time of influenza: social and institutional responses to pandemic emergencies.

This article examines the role of stigma in social and institutional responses to infectious disease emergencies, to better understand and minimize these dynamics in the event of a pandemic of virulent influenza. In addition to their impact on human suffering, fear and stigma can seriously delay detection and treatment efforts, cooperation with contact tracing and isolation measures, and the effective distribution of resources for the prevention and control of infectious diseases. These dynamics are illustrated by the Indian plague epidemic of 1994, which occurred in a region where H5N1 influe

Social support as a predictor of response to group therapy for complicated grief.

This study investigated the effect of perceived social support on the outcome of group therapy for patients who experienced complicated grief following a variety of death losses. One hundred and seven psychiatric outpatients, who received either interpretive or supportive group therapy, rated their perceptions of social support from three sources (family, friends, and a special person) prior to treatment onset. For patients in both forms of therapy, perceived social support from friends was directly associated with favorable treatment outcome. In contrast, perceived social support from family

Social status, health status and therapy response in heroin addicts.

This study identified the impact of heroin compared to other drugs of abuse on the social, nutritional and health status of addicts, and assessed their response to detoxification. A total of 243 heroin addicts and 66 non-heroin addicts were included in the study. Heroin and non-heroin addiction had similar impact on social and nutritional status, but heroin addicts were seven times more likely to develop hepatitis B or C infection. Non-heroin addicts were more prone to develop depressed cellular immunity. The number of relapses was twice as high for heroin addicts who experienced more unpleasa

Hormonal evidence for altered responsiveness to social stress in major depression.

In patients with major depression, abnormalities in baseline cortisol secretion and resistance to negative feedback are well established. However, it is unclear if patients with major depression have alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) response to stressors. While other challenges to the HPA axis have used endocrine stimuli such as insulin-induced hypoglycemia, we now report of the response to a social stressor in patients with major depression and matched control subjects. We used the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), a public speaking task followed by mental arithmetic cha

Trait hostility and ambulatory cardiovascular activity: responses to social interaction.

This study examined trait hostility and social interaction in relation to ambulatory cardiovascular activity in 40 male and 39 female undergraduates. Participants wore an ambulatory blood pressure monitor and completed diary entries while engaged in everyday activities. Diary reports indicating that participants had been talking were used to identify cardiovascular readings taken during social interaction. Interaction effects for overall diastolic blood pressure and heart rate levels indicated that hostility was positively associated with these variables in men only. In addition, hostility was

Expressed emotion, social skill, and response to negative affect in schizophrenia.

The social skills and social perception of schizophrenia patients in response to negative affect was examined as a function of family expressed emotion (EE). Patients participated in a role-play test, a social perception test, and a problem-solving discussion with a family member and were assessed on several measures of symptomatology. EE of family members was evaluated with the Camberwell Family Interview. On the role-play test, patients with less critical relatives became more assertive in response to increased negative affect from a confederate portraying either a family member or friend, b

Social support, threat, and coping responses and effectiveness in the functionally disabled.

A causal model based on Lazarus' (1966) cognitively oriented theory of psychological stress and coping was tested in a functionally disabled population to determine the effects of social support variables, threat appraisal, and coping responses on coping effectiveness. Social support variables (perceived availability of social support, perceived effectiveness of social support, and personal constraints to the use of social support) were hypothesized to effect coping responses both directly and through the variable of threat appraisal. Coping responses (use of social support, cognitive reapprai

Voluntary wheel running ameliorates abnormalities in social behavior induced by social isolation: Involvement of neural and neurochemical responses.

Social isolation (SI) can lead to devastating behavioral effects. Increasing evidence has demonstrated that physical activity can improve sociability and brain functions, but whether voluntary exercise can ameliorate SI-induced abnormalities in social behavior and its underlying neuronal mechanisms remains unknown. The present study found that SI during adulthood increased aggression in the resident-intruder test and motivation for social exploration in the three-chamber test. Voluntary wheel running (VWR) could reverse the alterations in social behavior induced by SI in male mice. In addition

How Response Styles Moderate the Relationship between Daily Stress and Social Interactions in Depression, Social Phobia, and Controls.

INTRODUCTION: Stress and social isolation are potent predictors of negative health outcomes and are impacted in mood and anxiety disorders. Difficulties in social interactions have been particularly noted in people diagnosed with major depression disorder (MDD) and social phobia (SP). It remains poorly understood, however, how these variables interact on a moment-to-moment basis and which variables moderate this relationship. Psychological flexibility, or the ability to be open to experiences while maintaining engagement in valued activities, may help moderate the relationship between stress a

The joint influence of emotional reactivity and social interaction quality on cardiovascular responses to daily social interactions in working adults.

OBJECTIVE: Social interaction quality is related to cardiovascular functioning. Trait emotional reactivity may amplify cardiovascular responses to social interactions, but is often examined as a tendency to react to negative events. We took a broader approach by examining the joint effects of positive and negative emotional reactivity and social interaction quality on ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) and heart rate (HR) responses to daily social interactions. METHODS: Participants were part of a larger study on BP and cardiovascular health (N = 805; MAge = 45.3; 40.1% male). Participants compl

Neural responses to social threat and predictors of cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy in social anxiety disorder.

Previous research has often highlighted hyperactivity in emotion regions to simple, static social threat cues in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Investigation of the neurobiology of SAD using more naturalistic paradigms can further reveal underlying mechanisms and how these relate to clinical outcomes. We used fMRI to investigate responses to novel dynamic rejection stimuli in individuals with SAD (N=70) and healthy controls (HC; N=17), and whether these responses predicted treatment outcomes following cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). Both HC and SA

Brain responses and approach bias to social alcohol cues and their association with drinking in a social setting in young adult males.

Alcohol is mainly consumed in social settings, in which people often adapt their drinking behaviour to that of others, also called imitation of drinking. Yet, it remains unclear what drives this drinking in a social setting. In this study, we expected to see stronger brain and behavioural responses to social compared to non-social alcohol cues, and these responses to be associated with drinking in a social setting. The sample consisted of 153 beer-drinking males, aged 18-25 years. Brain responses to social alcohol cues were measured during an alcohol cue-exposure task performed in an fMRI scan

Comorbid social withdrawal (hikikomori) in outpatients with social anxiety disorder: clinical characteristics and treatment response in a case series.

BACKGROUND: Severe social withdrawal (called hikikomori, and defined as isolation lasting more than six months and not due to an apparent mental disorder) has drawn increasing public attention in Japan. It is unclear whether hikikomori is merely a symptom or syndrome of social withdrawal. AIM: To evaluate this phenomenon in relationship to social anxiety disorder (SAD), as few previous studies have. METHODS: One hundred and forty-one consecutive patients with SAD diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria by a semi-structured interview were treated with a combination of psychotherapy, pharmacoth

Leader and organizational stakeholder perspectives on healthcare responsibility for addressing Social and Digital Determinants of Health (SD-DOH) in the United States: a scoping review and qualitative evidence synthesis.

BACKGROUND: U.S. health systems are increasingly expected to address social and digital determinants of health (SD-DOH) as part of equity-oriented transformation. While prior research documents growth in equity-oriented initiatives, less is known about how leaders and stakeholders frame healthcare organizations' responsibilities for this work, and whether those responsibility perspectives align with observed equity-oriented action. To address this gap, this study integrates two complementary conceptual lenses: (1) four strategic levers used by health systems to address SD-DOH: enabling service

On dying alone in prison and the social responsibility of medicine: a pilot interview study of physicians caring for terminally ill incarcerated patients in Austria and the United States.

BACKGROUND: This group of physicians is difficult to reach and small in number. While studies of palliative care and end-of-life (EOL) issues in prison have increased, especially in the United States and since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, they are still limited due to the constraints of carrying out research in carceral contexts. At present, there is very little knowledge of the experiences of physicians providing EOL care in prisons. The aim of this pilot study was to examine the experiences of doctors caring for terminally ill patients inside prisons. METHODS: Three exp
