The correlation of social support and family support with HIV-related stigma and depression in people living with HIV in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: HIV-related stigma and symptoms of depression (SOD) in people living with HIV (PLWH) remain public health challenges in many countries. This study determined the levels of support PLWH received from family and community and their impact on HIV-related stigma and SOD. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with PLWH at four outpatient clinics in four districts in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews. Social support and family support were measured using the Health Outcomes Research Social Support Survey and the Family Support Scale.

Internalized skin bias: validation study to explore the impact of the internalization of social stigma on those with hidradenitis suppurativa.

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic auto-inflammatory disease that is highly associated with adverse psychopathology and impaired body image. Previous studies show that patients with HS are also impacted by social stigma associated with their skin disease. Over time, these experiences can influence the way in which patients feel about themselves, leading to internalized skin bias (ISB). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the validity and reliability of the Internalized Skin Bias Questionnaire (ISBQ) in an HS population and to determine the association of this instrument with markers o

Destigmatizing borderline personality disorder with social justice and intersectional cultural humility: How researchers can construct and deconstruct stigma.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious psychiatric condition, especially stigmatized in women. Stigma is a social injustice, as it discredits and reduces the wholeness of a person to one of taint and discount. Psychological scientists play a uniquely powerful role in the stigmatization and destigmatization of BPD by constructing the meaning of BPD at each step of the research process. We discuss this powerful role and how to destigmatize BPD by incorporating an intersectionality framework that includes disability as a category of difference (as with gender, race, and sexuality). Stigma, social and structural vulnerability, and mental health among transgender women: A partial least square path modeling analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Existing literature suggests that transgender women (TW) may be at high risk for adverse mental health due to stress attributed to combined experiences of stigma and complex social and structural vulnerabilities. Little research has examined how these co-occurring experiences relate to mental health. We aimed to test a theoretically driven conceptual model of relationships between stigma, social and structural vulnerabilities, and mental health to inform future intervention tailoring. DESIGN/METHODS: Partial least square path modeling followed by response-based unit segmentation

From blame to belonging: Social and behavior change strategies to address infertility-related stigma in sub-Saharan Africa.

Infertility-related stigma remains a significant yet often overlooked issue in sexual and reproductive health programming, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Although awareness of infertility's prevalence and social, psychological, and health impacts is growing, efforts to address the associated stigma remain insufficient. Drawing on a synthesis of existing evidence, this commentary examines the multi-level nature of infertility-related stigma, highlighting its roots in social norms and structures that undermine the ability of individuals and couples to exercise their sexual and reproductive

Longitudinal associations among insomnia, stigma, social support, and depressive symptoms in tuberculosis: evidence from RI-CLPM and LGCM.

BACKGROUND: Depression is highly prevalent and severe in people with tuberculosis (PWTB), often linked to insomnia, stigma, inadequate social support, and other psychological factors. However, the longitudinal and dynamic relationships between depression and these factors remain unclear, as most existing evidence stems from cross-sectional studies. We therefore examined these associations using random intercept cross-lagged panel model (RI-CLPM) and latent growth curve models (LGCMs). METHODS: This study was conducted in three hospitals in China (West China Hospital, Guangyuan Mental Health C

Predictive factors for acceptance of a long-acting opiate substitution treatment studied through social representations and internalized stigma.

OBJECTIVES: Opioid use disorder is a public health problem worldwide with a treatment gap partially due to sociocultural representation and stigma. Taking the opportunity of an authorization to a subcutaneous (SC) injectable solution of buprenorphine, the first and only injectable treatment for opioid dependence available in France, we investigate potential obstacles to its implementation in France. METHODS: This study aimed to define the factors predicting the acceptance of a new SC form of opiate substitution treatment (OST) by comparing the social representations using an adapted version o

Narratives of Generativity and Resilience among LGBT Older Adults: Leaving Positive Legacies despite Social Stigma and Collective Trauma.

The aim of many adults in middle to old age is to be generative. Generativity is the concern older adults direct toward the wellbeing of future generations. Being generative results in positive well-being during later life and is especially important to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) older adults who have experienced lifelong discrimination. In this study, we identified stigmatizing social influences that both negatively and positively acted to inform understandings of generativity and the ability to leave a legacy for future generations. Using a narrative analysis met

Social support and maternal caregiving burden in families of children with Angelman syndrome in China: the mediating role of self-stigma.

BACKGROUND: Rearing a child with Angelman syndrome (AS) poses significant maternal burden. This study examines whether social support–including family, friends, and significant other dimensions–is associated with maternal caregiving burden among primary caregivers of children with AS in mainland China, and whether caregivers’ self-stigma mediates this relationship. METHODS: In the cross-sectional study, a total of 281 primary caregivers (263 mothers) of children with AS in China completed a questionnaire assessing sociodemographic factors, social support (MSPSS-12), self-stigma (ASS-22), and c

A topic modeling analysis of stigma dimensions, social, and related behavioral circumstances in clinical notes among patients with HIV.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize stigma dimensions, social, and related behavioral circumstances in people living with HIV (PLWHs) seeking care, using natural language processing methods applied to a large collection of electronic health record (EHR) clinical notes from a large integrated health system in the southeast United States. METHODS: We identified a cohort of PLWHs from the University of Florida (UF) Health Integrated Data Repository and performed topic modeling analysis using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to uncover stigma-related dimensions and related social and behavioral contexts.

On the lowest rung of the ladder: How social exclusion, perceived economic inequality and stigma increase homeless people's resignation.

Despite the relevance of social exclusion and economic inequality for homelessness, empirical studies investigating how these issues relate to homeless people's psychological well-being are scarce. We aimed to fill this gap by conducting two quasi-experimental studies on homeless and non-homeless groups. The first study (N = 200) showed that homeless (vs. non-homeless) people presented higher levels of resignation, characterized by depression, alienation, helplessness, and unworthiness (Williams, 2009). The second study (N = 183) replicated the findings from Study 1 and showed that perceived e

Perceived social support and depression among people living with HIV in China: roles of stigma and adherence self-efficacy.

INTRODUCTION: People living with HIV (PLHIV) are a high-risk group for depression. In particular, the prevalence and burden of depression is higher and more severe among PLHIV in developing and less-developed countries. There is evidence that perceived social support has a positive impact on reducing the occurrence of depression, and high stigma and low adherence self-efficacy are barriers to the effectiveness of social support for depressed PLHIV. However, how these risks affect the effect of social support on depression still needs further identification. METHODS: Between 2017 and 2018, a t

Cochlear implant aesthetics and its impact on stigma, social interaction and quality of life: a mixed-methods study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Awareness of the benefits of cochlear implants is low, and barriers such as fear of surgery and ongoing rehabilitation have been noted. Perceived stigma associated with hearing loss also plays a key role, with many adults not wanting to appear old or be identified as a person with a disability. In effect, a cochlear implant makes deafness visible. New technologies have led to a smaller external profile for some types of cochlear implants, but qualitative assessments of benefit have not been explored. This study will examine cochlear implant aesthetics and cosmetics, and its impac

Human Tail: A Benign Condition Hidden Out of Social Stigma and Shame in Young Adult - A Case Report and Review.

A human tail is a rare congenital anomaly which mostly presents immediately after birth or in early childhood. Here, we are presenting a case of 17-year-old male who presented with 18-cm long tail, which was hidden till this age because of social stigma and shame. This is longest human tail reported of our knowledge. This patient presented to us because he started having difficulty, pain while sitting, and discomfort in daily activities because of long tail. We suspect there are far more cases of human tails in developing world which are hidden because of lack of knowledge, illiteracy, social

Perceived social support, coping, and stigma on the quality of life of people living with HIV in Nepal: a moderated mediation analysis.

Perceived social support, coping strategy, and internalized stigma have been linked with the quality of life (QOL) among people living with HIV (PLHIV). However, little is known about how these psychosocial factors interact with each other and affect QOL. This study incorporated a moderated mediation model to investigate whether coping strategy mediates the relationship between perceived social support and QOL, and to examine whether this mediating effect varies with the level of internalized stigma among PLHIV. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 599 PLHIV in Nepal. The multidimension

Social stigma and mental health among rural-to-urban migrants in China: A conceptual framework and future research needs.

There are over 100 million individuals in China who have migrated from rural villages to urban areas for jobs or better lives without permanent urban residency (i.e., "rural-to-urban migrants"). Our preliminary data from ongoing research among rural-to-urban migrants in China suggest that the migrant population is strongly stigmatized. Moreover, it appears that substantial numbers of these migrants experience mental health symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety, hostility, social isolation). While the population potentially affected is substantial (more than 9% of the entire population or about o

Independent Associations of Diabetes Stigma and Perceived Social Support with Depression and Anxiety Among Adults with Type 2 Diabetes.

Background/Objectives: Depression and anxiety are common among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and are associated with poorer clinical outcomes. Although diabetes stigma and perceived social support have been linked to psychological distress in T2DM, they have largely been investigated separately and with limited adjustment for potential confounders. This study aimed to examine whether diabetes stigma and perceived social support are independently associated with depression and anxiety after adjustment for sociodemographic and clinical confounders and, secondarily, to evaluate

The interplay of psychological distress, stigma, and social support in determining quality of life among Vietnamese people living with HIV.

INTRODUCTION: This study explores the intersection of psychological distress, stigma, and social support among Vietnamese people living with HIV (PLWH), focusing on their impact on quality of life (QoL). While antiretroviral therapy (ART) enhances survival, stigma and mental health issues persist, undermining QoL. Addressing these gaps in Vietnam is critical for improving comprehensive HIV care. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was employed at Thu Duc City Hospital from March to May 2024, involving 369 PLWH receiving ART. Data collection utilized validated tools to assess anxiety symptoms (GA
