Health inequalities according to educational level in different welfare regimes: a comparison of 23 European countries.

The object of this study was to determine whether the magnitude of educational health inequalities varies between European countries with different welfare regimes. The data source is based on the first and second wave of the European Social Survey. The first health indicator describes people's mental and physical health in general, while the second reports cases of any limiting longstanding illness. Educational inequalities in health were measured as the difference in health between people with an average number of years of education and people whose educational years lay one standard deviati

Inadequate socialisation, inactivity, and urban living environment are associated with social fearfulness in pet dogs.

Problematic behaviours are severe welfare issues for one of the world's most popular pets, the domestic dog. One of the most prevalent behavioural problem that causes distress to dogs is social fearfulness, meaning fear of conspecifics or unfamiliar people. To identify demographic and environmental factors associated with fear of dogs and strangers, logistic regression was utilised with a large dataset of 6,000 pet dogs collected through an owner-filled behavioural survey. Social fearfulness was associated with several factors, including urban environment, poor socialisation during puppyhood,

Social genetic insurance: A life-cycle perspective.

Temporal risk aversion can justify a social genetic insurance scheme, even in the absence of reclassification risk. I model individuals who take a genetic test in period 0 and may become ill in period 2. I show that redistributing from low-risk to high-risk individuals in period 1 can increase social welfare, even when the high-risk are not financially penalized. Temporally risk-averse individuals value reductions in the risk to their lifetime utility brought by illness, such as increased morbidity and mortality. A social insurance can achieve this by taxing the low-risk and subsidizing the hi

Using welfare technology for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Expectations, experiences, and challenges of intellectual disability nursing students during clinical placement.

PURPOSE: Little is known about how welfare technology (WT) is used in welfare services for people with intellectual disabilities. This study aimed to explore expectations, experiences, and challenges concerning the use of WT for people with intellectual disabilities among bachelor-level intellectual disability nursing students during clinical placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A written reflection assignment (four open questions about using WT) was collected from 100 intellectual disability nursing students (30 males, 70 females). Four focus group discussions were also performed with 13 intell

Qualitative analysis of selected literature sources addressing the issue of homelessness.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this article is to answer the main research question, which reads: "How is the issue of homelessness presented in the relevant literature?" Basic terms related to homelessness and homeless people are defined at the beginning of the article. Homelessness is a complex social problem, with many factors contributing to its origin and development that can, in principle, be divided into objective and subjective factors. METHODS: A qualitative research strategy was chosen to address the main research question. Analysis of documents using content analysis was used as the

Physical Exercise, Social Interaction, Access to Care, and Community Service: Mediators in the Relationship Between Socioeconomic Status and Health Among Older Patients With Diabetes.

The differences in socioeconomic status (SES) will cause a disparity in the health of the elderly. Taking diabetes as an example, previous studies have focused on risk factors of diabetes, while the relationship and mechanism between SES, multi-faceted factors, and the health of older patients with diabetes are not well-understood. This study aims to investigate the association between SES and health in older patients with diabetes and the interrelated mediators between them. Based on the data of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) in 2018, structural equation modeling (S

Gender Disparity Among Homeless People: Evidence From a Territory-Wide Survey in Hong Kong.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined gender differences and their impact on the livelihoods of the homeless population in Hong Kong, exploring variables such as homeless duration, mental health, social relationships, economic status, risky behavior, and welfare assistance utilization. BACKGROUND: Gender inequalities worsen the health vulnerabilities of homeless women. While existing studies have focused on Western contexts, there is a lack of understanding in non-Western settings, especially in East Asian regions with a strongly patriarchal culture like Hong Kong. METHODS: Based on gender socializ

Loneliness among older adults in Europe: time to integrate health and social care.

Loneliness is a major concern for public health in contemporary societies. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to loneliness because of their reduced social connections following life changes, such as retirement. Loneliness is often investigated and discussed together with social isolation. While social isolation implies an actual lack of social connections, loneliness implies a perceived deficit of social relations regardless of the real amount of social contacts. However, since living alone may lead to loneliness, individuals can experience both loneliness and social isolation together.

Health problems and health care for adolescents in residential facilities in Quebec.

The health problems of 160 adolescents in four residential facilities of the Quebec social welfare court were studied. At the time of admission 44% had at least one problem requiring consultation with a specialist and 80% had an average of two problems requiring primary care. The medical records of 106 youngsters in two re-education centres were also reviewed and similar results were noted. The health services available, particularly physical examination and laboratory testing at the time of admission and arrangements for referral and follow-up were judged to be insufficient in most centres. A

Understanding Behavioural Development of Calves in Natural Settings to Inform Calf Management.

One important type of animal welfare concern is "natural living" (i.e., that animals are able to express natural behaviours that are important to them, and to engage with aspects of the natural world that they find important). The aims of this narrative review were to describe the behavioural development of calves (Bos taurus) in natural settings and use this to identify characteristics of natural systems that may be important to consider relative to this natural living conception of animal welfare. At birth, calves are licked by their mothers and soon stand to suckle for colostrum, and during

The Sustainability of Keeping Birds as Pets: Should Any Be Kept?

We describe a wide range of unethical and unsustainable practices inherent to the trading and keeping of pet birds. At present, biodiversity and wild bird populations are being greatly harmed and many individual birds have poor welfare. Wild-caught birds should not be sold to the public as pets, or to breeding establishments for several reasons, including because 75-90% of wild-caught birds die before the point of sale and taking birds from the wild has negative effects on biodiversity. The housing provided for pet birds should meet the needs of birds of that species and allow good welfare, fo

Determinants of Quality of Life Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults in Urban South India: A Community-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Population ageing poses significant public health challenges, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. India's ageing population is rapidly increasing, posing challenges to quality of life (QoL) because of declining physical, functional, and psychological well-being. This study aimed to assess QoL and identify its determinants among the older urban population in Visakhapatnam, India. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 400 older adults (≥60 years) selected by simple random sampling from the electoral roll of an urban field practice area in Vi

Challenges and Solutions in Evaluation Technical Assistance During Design and Early Implementation.

This case study discusses two federal grant initiatives and the evaluation technical assistance (ETA) provided to the grantees. One program is a multiphase program funded by the Children's Bureau (CB) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families. The program funded communities interested in preventing homelessness among youth and young adults with child welfare histories. The funder, grantees, and ETA provider call it Youth At-Risk of Homelessness (YARH). Six federal agencies-the U.S. Departments of Education, Health and Human Services, and

Childhood abuse history, secondary traumatic stress, and child welfare workers.

Social workers are exposed to trauma vicariously through the trauma of their clients. This phenomenon, called secondary traumatic stress, vicarious traumatization, or compassion fatigue, presents a risk of negative personal psychological consequences. Based on a sample of 166 child welfare workers and using standardized measures, the study findings document the link between a personal history of primary trauma, childhood abuse or neglect, and the heightened risk for secondary traumatic stress in child welfare workers.

Victims or perpetrators? Young mothers who survived intimate partner violence and their involvement with the child welfare system in Ontario.

Adolescent and young adult mothers investigated by child welfare experience multiple challenges, including high concentrations of poverty, housing instability, social isolation, mental health issues, and intimate partner violence (IPV). However, little is known about the lived experiences of young mothers involved with the child welfare system who have also encountered IPV. This study begins to address this gap by analyzing interview data of young mothers who had child welfare involvement in Ontario while pregnant or parenting and who noted experiencing IPV (n = 10). Interpretative phenomenolo

Vocal correlates of arousal in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops spp.) in human care.

Human-controlled regimes can entrain behavioural responses and may impact animal welfare. Therefore, understanding the influence of schedules on animal behaviour can be a valuable tool to improve welfare, however information on behaviour overnight and in the absence of husbandry staff remains rare. Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops spp.) are highly social marine mammals and the most common cetacean found in captivity. They communicate using frequency modulated signature whistles, a whistle type that is individually distinctive and used as a contact call. We investigated the vocalisations of ten do

Psychiatric referrals from the police.

This is a study of one mode of inception into psychiatric care in Birmingham. Mentally disturbed people coming to the attention of the police are referred to a mental welfare officer and assessed by him, usually in a police station. The mental welfare officer may then refer for a psychiatric decision with regard to further management, and the patient is examined by the doctor in the police station. The annual frequency of use of this referral system was studied from 1962-73 inclusive. It is shown that there was an increase in referral over the years and that such referral from the police becam

Values Beyond "Health" in Budget-Constrained Healthcare Systems.

OBJECTIVES: Most current methods to value healthcare treatments only incorporate measures such as quality-adjusted life-years, combining gains in health-related quality of life and life expectancy in specific ways. Failure of these methods to recognize other dimensions of value has led to calls for methods to include additional values that are associated with the healthcare treatments but not captured directly by quality-adjusted life-years. This article seeks to provide methodologically sound ways to incorporate additional health-related outcomes, focusing on budget-constrained healthcare sys

Social surveys of old age in Great Britain, 1945-58.

In Great Britain, since the end of the Second World War, the problems of old age have tended to supersede those of poverty and unemployment as the object of social studies. The following article assesses some of the most important findings of 33 surveys conducted between 1945 and 1958 investigating the social needs and circumstances of old people. The fact emerges that family ties are stronger than is perhaps realized and that most of the aged live a reasonably secure life within their families. It is pointed out, however, that a small minority exists whose distress is evident and who do not se

Spatiotemporal dynamics of equine group formation reveal the gradual emergence of social cohesion.

Stable social relationships are essential for horse welfare, yet domestic management often involves regrouping unfamiliar individuals, potentially causing social stress. Fine-scale dynamics of social integration remain poorly quantified due to limitations of observational sampling. Using ultra-wideband real-time positioning, we tracked the development of spatial and social relationships in two newly formed equine groups (n = 19) over 2-12 months. Inter-individual distances decreased significantly, with time spent within 3 m of conspecifics increasing from 1.2 to 27.3% within two months, demons
