Professional value of the advanced palliative and hospice social work certification: Findings from a national survey of palliative social workers.

BACKGROUND: The Advanced Palliative Hospice Social Work Certification (APHSW-C) is the first exam-based credential to define and objectively verify standardized competencies for palliative and hospice social workers in the United States. As the certification reaches its first five-year milestone, little is known about how certificants perceive its professional value, impact on professional identity, and recognition by healthcare institutions. OBJECTIVES: To examine how those holding the APHSW-C perceive the certification's impact on their professional identity, interprofessional recognition,

A social-semantic working-memory account for two canonical language areas.

Language and social cognition are traditionally studied as separate cognitive domains, yet accumulative studies reveal overlapping neural correlates at the left ventral temporoparietal junction (vTPJ) and the left lateral anterior temporal lobe (lATL), which have been attributed to sentence processing and social concept activation. We propose a common cognitive component underlying both effects: social-semantic working memory. We confirmed two key predictions of our hypothesis using functional MRI. First, the left vTPJ and lATL showed sensitivity to sentences only when the sentences conveyed s

Working memory capacity in social anxiety disorder: Revisiting prior conclusions.

In one of the few studies examining working memory processes in social anxiety disorder (SAD), Amir and Bomyea (2011) recruited participants with and without SAD to complete a working memory span task with neutral and social threat words. Those with SAD showed better working memory performance for social threat words compared to neutral words, suggesting an enhancement in processing efficiency for socially threatening information in SAD. The current study sought to replicate and extend these findings. In this study, 25 participants with a principal diagnosis of SAD, 24 anxious control (AC) par

Adolescent social defeat decreases spatial working memory performance in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent social stress is associated with increased incidence of mental illnesses in adulthood that are characterized by deficits in cognitive focus and flexibility. Such enhanced vulnerability may be due to psychosocial stress-induced disruption of the developing mesocortical dopamine system, which plays a fundamental role in facilitating complex cognitive processes such as spatial working memory. Adolescent rats exposed to repeated social defeat as a model of social stress develop dopaminergic hypofunction in the medial prefrontal cortex as adults. To evaluate a direct link bet

Diagnostic work-up of socially unacceptable snoring. II. Sleep endoscopy.

In the diagnostic work-up of socially unacceptable snoring (SUS) with or without a history suggestive of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS), information on the severity of the pathology as well as on local and general causative factors is needed. In part I of this study, we reported on the findings recorded in 380 patients by means of sleep registration. In this part, our emphasis is on analysis of the local contributing factors. In 340 of the 380 patients sleep endoscopy was performed to establish the level(s) of obstruction as accurately as possible. Sleep endoscopy was performed follo

The joint influence of emotional reactivity and social interaction quality on cardiovascular responses to daily social interactions in working adults.

OBJECTIVE: Social interaction quality is related to cardiovascular functioning. Trait emotional reactivity may amplify cardiovascular responses to social interactions, but is often examined as a tendency to react to negative events. We took a broader approach by examining the joint effects of positive and negative emotional reactivity and social interaction quality on ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) and heart rate (HR) responses to daily social interactions. METHODS: Participants were part of a larger study on BP and cardiovascular health (N = 805; MAge = 45.3; 40.1% male). Participants compl

Emotion as a Skill: A Practical Methodology for Coping with Emotional Risks in Social Work.

Emotional risks are ubiquitous in social work practice and pose significant threats to the health and well-being of practitioners and clients. Emotional skills are recognized as the best practice approach for coping with these risks. However, existing research on emotional skills is almost all from the fields of medicine, education, and psychology, and little attention is paid to it in the social work literature. To address this gap, the study explored Chinese social workers' experiences and perceptions of using emotional skills in practice through semistructured interviews (N = 28). The study

A Social Work Perspective on Preparing for Retirement in Spain: Beyond the Economic Approach.

Population aging and labor market transformations pose urgent challenges in Spain that require a critical review of retirement preparation from a social work perspective. This article analyses such preparation through a qualitative policy analysis and narrative literature review based on legislation and reforms of the pension system in Spain (2011-2026). Drawing on the cultural biology framework of Humberto Maturana and Ximena Dávila, it examines how prevailing approaches prioritize financial sustainability and the extension of working life, whilst relegating the relational, emotional and comm

Understanding social work's role in abortion care: A comprehensive scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Social workers have played a crucial role in abortion care for decades, addressing clients' diverse abortion care needs. Social workers have ethical duties to provide unimpeded access to information and supports to clients, in pursuit of social justice. This scoping review comprehensively synthesizes published literature on social work's role in abortion care. METHODS: The review adhered to Arksey and O'Malley's five-stage framework. The following databases were searched for literature published between 1973-2023: PsycINFO, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Social Work Abstracts, Social Services A

A syndrome centered on the dysregulation of behavioral rhythms (DBR) is discussed. Recent pandemic brought to observe: (1) Having a DBR affecting sleep patterns, eating habits, and social interactions, before the lockdown period, was a determinant for depressive episodes during the lockdown; (2) In tighter lockdowns, DBR triggered depressive episodes in bipolar patients; (3) DBR in healthcare workers under pressure was a determinant of burnout; (4) DBR influenced the course of chronic diseases by altering immune responses. In addition, it was found that scoring positive on the Mood Disorder Qu

The Impact of Work Characteristics on Social Distancing: Implications at the Time of COVID-19.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) continues to spread globally. While social distancing has attracted attention as a measure to prevent the spread of infection, some occupations find it difficult to implement. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relationship between work characteristics and social distancing using data available on O*NET, an occupational information site. A total of eight factors were extracted by performing an exploratory factor analysis: work conditions, supervisory work, information processing, response to aggression, specialization, autonomy, interaction outside

The impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on surrogacy in India: The role of social work.

The impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic have been catastrophic internationally, with alarming rates of cases and deaths, as well as travel bans and countrywide lockdowns. While many industries are experiencing the deleterious effects of Covid-19, international surrogacy is facing enormous ethical challenges resulting from the pandemic. Drawing on the first author's reflections on research with Indian surrogate mothers, coupled with contemporary literature, this paper highlights the impacts of Covid-19 on surrogacy in India, particularly regarding the strict lockdown laws intended to protect civil

Distinct Effects of Social Stress on Working Memory in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Stress might exaggerate the compulsion and impair the working memory of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This study evaluated the effect of stress on the cognitive neural processing of working memory in OCD and its clinical significance using a "number calculation working memory" task. Thirty-eight patients and 55 gender- and education-matched healthy controls were examined. Stress impaired the performance of the manipulation task in patients. Healthy controls showed less engagement of the medial prefrontal cortex and striatum during the task under stress versus less stress,

Caste-, work-, and descent-based discrimination as a determinant of health in social epidemiology.

Social epidemiology explores health in the context of broad social determinants of health, where the boundary lines between health and politics appear increasingly blurred. Social determinants of health such as caste, discrimination, and social exclusion are inherently political in nature, hence it becomes imperative to look at health through a broader perspective of political philosophy, ideology, and caste that imposes enormous obstacles to a person's full attainment of civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. Caste is descent based and hereditary in nature. It is a character

Social Work-Supported Strategies to Reduce Postoperative Readmissions in Orthopedic Surgery: A Narrative Review.

Postoperative readmissions in orthopedic surgery remain a persistent cause of patient morbidity and increased healthcare costs, many of which are preventable through improved care coordination. Social workers are uniquely positioned to address psychosocial and structural barriers influencing postoperative recovery. This narrative review examined peer-reviewed literature published between 2000 and 2025 using PubMed, Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and Google Scholar. Eligible studies included U.S.-based articles evaluating social work roles in discharg

Social jetlag and sleep debts are altered in different rosters of night shift work.

BACKGROUND: Night and shift work are suspected to cause various adverse effects on health and sleep. Sleep deprivation through shift work is assumed to be compensated on free days. So far it is not clear how different shift systems and shift lengths affect sleep structure on work and free days. Especially working night shifts disrupts the circadian rhythm but also extended working hours (12h) might affect sleep characteristics. Hitherto, the magnitude of sleep debt, social jetlag, and Locomotor Inactivity During Sleep (LIDS) in different shift systems is unknown. METHODS: Here, we investigate
