Person-related predictors of employment outcomes after participation in psychiatric vocational rehabilitation programmes--a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing recognition of the importance of psychiatric vocational rehabilitation (PVR) programmes in helping individuals with severe mental illnesses to find and secure jobs. However, little is known concerning the factors related to PVR outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This review identifies those person-related factors which most strongly influence employment outcomes after participation in PVR programmes. METHOD: Medline, Psychinfo, Pubmed and CINAHL were searched for studies using multivariate analysis of longitudinal data, which analysed employment outcomes after at least 6 mo

Effect of Atrial Septal Defect in Adults on Work Participation (from a Nation Wide Register-Based Follow-Up Study Regarding Work Participation and Use of Permanent Social Security Benefits).

Low work participation is well known in patients with chronic disease but has not been described in patients with atrial septal defect (ASD). In this nation-wide cohort study, we report the first long-term follow-up of use of permanent social security benefits and work participation in adults with ASD. All Danes born before 1994 and diagnosed with ASD from 1959 to 2013 (n = 2,277) were identified from the Danish medical registries. We used Cox proportional hazards regression to compare the risk of receiving permanent social security benefits in the ASD patients compared with an age- and gender

Engaging and retaining women in outpatient alcohol and other drug treatment: the effect of referral intensity.

Women with alcohol or other drug (AOD) problems experience a range of barriers to inpatient treatment. Although research in the general population shows that high-intensity referrals are more effective than low-intensity referrals at engaging and retaining individuals in outpatient AOD treatment, the impact of referral intensity has not been assessed for women only. To examine this issue, a secondary analysis was conducted using an existing data set that included a sample of 109 women. Although intensity of referral was not related to entry into or relapse during treatment, high-intensity refe

The relationship between agoraphobia, social phobia and blood-injury phobia in phobic and anxious-depressed patients.

This paper reports the results of principal components and stepwise discriminant analyses of anxiety, depression and fear scores for 74 phobic and anxious-depressed psychiatric patients. Factor analysis indicated a coherent agoraphobia factor, with less coherent blood-injury and social phobia factors. Discriminant analysis showed a high degree of correct classification of diagnosed agoraphobic, blood-injury and social phobic patients particularly for agoraphobia. A frequency distribution of the phobia scores indicated an all or nothing quality to agoraphobic fears. The results indicate that ag

The effectiveness of attached social workers in the management of depressed female patients in general practice.

There is a pressing need to evaluate the different forms of treatment for depressive illness encountered in general practice. This study consists of a controlled, randomized, clinical trial designed to investigate the effectiveness of social work intervention with depressed women. Eighty women aged between 18 and 45 were included and assessed initially by means of a psychiatric and social interview. Those ascertained to be suffering from 'acute' or 'acute on chronic' depression were randomly allocated to an experimental group who were referred to a social worker attached to a general practice

Home bittersweet home: the significance of home for occupational transformations.

BACKGROUND: The study illuminated how persons with psychiatric disabilities experienced the processes of change in a residential context. MATERIAL: Qualitative interviews with residents living in supported housing were conducted and analyzed using constant comparative analysis. DISCUSSION: Residential conditions appear to provide a complex structure that facilitates rehabilitative interactions, in which 'progressive tensions' arise between opposing values, such as authentic versus artificial, and independence versus dependence, both of which are important in the process of change. CONCLUSIO

Deprivation in the childhood of depressed women.

With recent developments in community psychiatric services, concern with prevention has become an urgent social, as well as medical challenge. Comprehensive investigation into causation must therefore be given systematic emphasis. This paper is an effort toward clarification of etiology, specifically of the depressive disorder, in terms of early childhood experiences. The work is based on social and psychiatric history data collected by experienced psychiatric social workers on two groups of subjects from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Collaborative Depression Studies under the

Clarifying the Behavioral Economics of Social Anxiety Disorder: Effects of Interpersonal Problems and Symptom Severity on Generosity.

Social anxiety disorder is associated with lower interpersonal warmth, possibly explaining its associated interpersonal impairment. Across two samples, we attempted to replicate previous findings that the disorder's constraint of interpersonal warmth can be detected via behavioral economic tasks. We also tested the test-retest stability of task indices. Results indicated that factors associated with social anxiety disorder (and not the disorder itself), such as the severity of social anxiety and more extreme interpersonal problems, lead to less generous behavior on the economic task examined.

Mentally ill women in a county jail.

We studied 101 inmates of a county jail for women who were randomly selected from those referred for psychiatric evaluation. Eighty-six percent had a history of psychiatric hospitalization; 94% had prior arrest records, 50% of these for felonies. More than half met the criteria for involuntary hospitalization. When arrested more than 40% were transients, and only 7% were employed. Seventy percent had histories of serious physical violence, more than 40% had engaged in prostitution, and 84% of those with children had demonstrated an inability to take care of them. Far fewer mentally ill women t

[Innovation and extermination--psychiatric research and "euthanasia" at the Heidelberg Psychiatric Clinic 1939-1945].

The history of German psychiatry is characterized not only by innovative thought in the tradition of Kraepelin and Jaspers, but also by the "euthanasia" program that resulted in the killing of more than 100,000 psychiatric patients and mentally handicapped people. Exemplified by the Psychiatric Department at the University of Heidelberg, the relation between psychiatric research and the systematic killing of patients during the time of National Socialism is analysed. The first part of the paper summarizes the historical background of the general condition of German psychiatry in the 1930s and

Social services case-management for long-term mental disorders: a randomised controlled trial.

Case management arose in the USA as a solution to the difficulties of providing community care to people with severe mental disorders. The basic principle of the approach is that a case manager takes responsibility for a client; arranges an assessment of need, a comprehensive service plan, delivery of suitable services, and monitoring and assessment of services delivered. The case-management approach has been widely accepted, to the extent that recent legislation has made case-management the cornerstone of community care in the UK. We did a randomised controlled trial to evaluate a social serv

Diagnosis and expectation for change: an inverse relationship?

The purpose of this study was a test the hypothesis that the use of psychiatric labels leads to reduced expectations for patient change and recovery. Thirty-nine staff members at a residential mental hospital were given a description of a patient and asked to indicate expected length of stay in the hospital, chance of readmission, chance of leading a normal life, and overall prognosis. A diagnosis of schizophrenia, paranoid type was included at the end of half of the descriptions and was omitted in the other half. It was found that staff working in the acute treatment areas were significantly
