Amelioration and deterioration: Social network typologies and mental health among female domestic workers in China.

Previous quantitative studies on the effects of social network types on mental health have obtained inconsistent or conflicting results, due to problems such as sample selection bias or crude measurement of variables. In this study, we avoided these problems by using appropriate statistical methodology to examine the effect of various forms of social network on the mental health of a sample of 987 Chinese female domestic workers. Thus, we measured social network types in terms of both network attributes (friend networks and family networks) and interaction channels (face-to-face, telephone, an

Guiding hand hygiene interventions among future healthcare workers: implications of knowledge, attitudes, and social influences.

BACKGROUND: Medical students in their clinical years play an important role in healthcare delivery, yet poor levels of hand hygiene (HH) compliance in this population raise the risk for propagating nosocomial infections. To date, there has been a lack of dedicated interventions showing sustainable improvements in HH in this population. METHODS: A multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted among 450 medical students in their clinical years (third to fifth years). A self-administered, pre-validated questionnaire based on the World Health Organization's "Knowledge" and "Perception" questio

Agreement between the fatty acid ethyl ester hair test for alcohol and social workers' reports.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social worker reports and the fatty acid ethyl ester (FAEE) test as a biomarker for heavy alcohol use. In 2005, a diagnostic program to detect excessive alcohol use by FAEE hair analysis in parents at high risk of having children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders was established. All cases submitted by Child Protective Services between May and December of 2007 (n = 172) were included comparing social worker reports with FAEE test outcome by odds ratio analysis. A subanalysis of mothers (n = 119), excluding fathers, was also

Digital trajectories of acculturation: social media practices among a sample of African female domestic workers.

Globalization and cross-cultural migration have intensified the movement of individuals across national and cultural boundaries, particularly among migrants employed in feminized labor sectors. Within these contexts, acculturation is shaped not only by face-to-face interactions but also by engagement with digital media. This study examines how and why African female domestic workers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) use social media and how these practices shape their acculturation experiences. Using a qualitative research design, the study draws on in-depth interviews with African female dome

Status and Influencing Factors of Social Media Addiction in Chinese Workers: Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Social media addiction (SMA) caused by excessive dependence on social media is becoming a global problem. At present, most of the SMA studies recruit college students as research participants, with very few studies involving workers and other age groups, especially in China. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the current status of SMA among Chinese workers and analyze its influencing factors. METHODS: From November 1, 2022, to January 30, 2023, we conducted an anonymous web-based questionnaire survey in mainland China, and a total of 5176 participants completed the questio

Using social practice theory in measuring perceived stigma among female sex workers in Mombasa, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Perceived stigma is a complex societal phenomenon that is harboured especially by female sex workers because of the interplay of a myriad of factors. As such, a precise measure of the contribution of different social practices and characteristics is necessary for both understanding and intervening in matters related to perceived stigma. We developed a Perceived Stigma Index that measures the factors that greatly contribute to the stigma among sex workers in Kenya, and thereby inform a framework for future interventions. METHODS: Social Practice Theory was adopted in the developmen

HIV risk and social networks among male-to-female transgender sex workers in Boston, Massachusetts.

Male-to-female transgender individuals who engage in sex work constitute a group at high risk for HIV infection in the United States. This mixed-methods formative study examined sexual risk among preoperative transgender male-to-female sex workers (N =11) in Boston. More than one third of the participants were HIV-infected and reported a history of sexually transmitted diseases. Participants had a mean of 36 (SD =72) transactional male sex partners in the past 12 months, and a majority reported at least one episode of unprotected anal sex. Qualitative themes included (a) sexual risk, (b) motiv

Social-environmental factors and protective sexual behavior among sex workers: the Encontros intervention in Brazil.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine the association of social-environmental factors with condom use and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among 420 sex workers participating in an STI/HIV prevention study in Corumbá, Brazil, to inform future intervention efforts. METHODS: Participants provided urine samples for polymerase chain reaction testing of chlamydia and gonorrhea and responded to multi-item scales addressing perceived social cohesion, participation in networks, and access to and management of resources. We conducted multivariate log-linear and negative binomial regression analyses

Mental health, burnout and job satisfaction among mental health social workers in England and Wales.

METHOD: A postal survey incorporating the General Health Questionnaire, Maslach Burnout Inventory, Karasek Job Content Questionnaire and a job satisfaction measure was sent to 610 MHSWs in England and Wales. Heavy users of an emergency department: psycho-social and medical characteristics, other health care contacts and the effect of a hospital social worker intervention.

A small proportion of the patients coming to emergency departments of general hospitals account for a substantial share of the department's resources by making repeated visits. Repeater behaviour is a complex product of many, sometimes concurrent factors. This study has focused on the medical and psycho-social factors. A group of patients with repeated visits to an emergency department of a middle-sized Stockholm hospital was studied in 1980. The repeater group had a heavier load of psycho-social problems than the source population. The repeater behaviour profile included: feeling of lonelines

Ethics, Empathy, and Attitudes: Exploring the Mediating Role of Empathy in Social Workers' Perspectives Toward Disability.

This study examines the relationships among professional ethical sensitivity, empathy, and attitudes toward individuals with disabilities among active social workers, specifically focusing on the mediating role of empathy as an "emotional bridge." Employing a cross-sectional correlational survey design, data were collected from 355 social workers. Participants completed validated scales measuring professional ethical sensitivity, empathic tendencies, and attitudes toward disability. A mediation analysis was conducted using Hayes' PROCESS Macro (Model 4) with 5000 bootstrap samples. The results

Acculturation, Social Support, and Healthcare Utilisation Among Indonesian Migrant Workers in Malaysia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Equitable healthcare access is a key aspect of health equity, yet migrants face substantial barriers. In Malaysia, migrant workers encounter structural and socio-economic barriers to healthcare. Acculturation and social support may influence healthcare utilisation, but their interrelated role remains unclear. This study examined associations between acculturation, social support, and healthcare utilisation among Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia, and whether social support was indirectly associated with the relationship between acculturation and healthcare utilisation. METHOD

Frontline Social Service Workers' Experiences Supporting Sexual and Reproductive Health of People Who Have Been Incarcerated.

BACKGROUND: Research on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care among women and gender-diverse people in prisons in Canada demonstrates gaps in access to health information and institutional barriers to care. Women and gender-diverse people leaving prison often access community supports provided by non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The experiences, needs and skills of staff at these organizations with respect to supporting client SRH are under-researched. METHODS: This study followed a community-based design involving four qualitative focus groups at partner organization sites, for a t
