As humans rely on social groups for survival, social motivation is central to behavior and well-being. Here we define social motivation as the effort that initiates and directs behavior towards social outcomes, with the goal of satisfying our fundamental need for connection. We propose an integrated framework of social motivation which emphasizes the maintenance of optimal connection levels through effort exertion, regulating social approach and avoidance, which allow interpersonal synchrony. Together, these behaviors serve as basic building blocks of social behavior, and give rise to behavior

Previous studies failed to show clear differences between people with social phobia and non-anxious individuals regarding the specificity and affective intensity of their autobiographical memories for social events. However, these studies did not assess the subjective experience associated with remembering. In this study, people with social phobia and non-anxious control participants recalled social and non-social events, and rated the phenomenal characteristics of their memories. The memories of people with social phobia for social events contained fewer sensorial details but more self-refere

Social environmental factors frequently play an important role in early-life. It is reported that isolation increases vulnerability to develop alcohol use disorder. We investigated the effects of re-socialization on high alcohol preference and anxiety behaviors, induced by early-life social isolation (SI), and its possible underlying mechanism in male Wistar rats. On the 21st postnatal day, animals were either housed in groups of (CON) or isolated (SI-1) for the first stage (3 weeks). Afterwards, the SI-1 group were divided into two groups: re-socialization with socially housed rats (Re-SH) an

Families of color often face daily racist incidents that lead to dynamic interactions and race-based messaging between parents and children; however, few studies have examined this phenomenon in Asian American families. Using 60 days of daily-diary data from a national sample of 108 adolescents (53.7% girls; range = 11-18-year-old; Mage = 14.8 years, SDage = 1.7, 29.6% low-income), this study examined (a) how different forms of parental racial-ethnic socialization (PRES) moderated associations between racial-ethnic discrimination (RED) and Asian American adolescents' psychosocial well-being an

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate parenting factors that contribute to their children's distress during wartime. Parental distress, war-related dialogue styles, and emotional socialization were examined as potential predictors of children's traumatic stress.
METHOD: The study included 404 Israeli parents and their children (under 18), utilizing self-report questionnaires and parent-reported measures. Key constructs measured included parental distress (anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, perceived stress), war-related dialogue styles (modulated disclosure, unf

OBJECTIVE: Determine if retrospectively-reported caregiver emotion socialization (ES) from adolescence moderates the relation of current distress (stress, anxiety, depressive symptoms) to caregiver emotional support seeking during the college transition.
PARTICIPANTS: Students (n = 520) at a public Midwestern university returning to in-person learning during the 2021-2022 academic year.
METHOD: Using a cross-sectional design and previously validated questionnaires, participants self-reported current distress, attachment to caregivers, and caregiver emotional support seeking, and retrospectiv

This study investigates the mediating role of mothers' emotion socialization practices and emotion regulation difficulties in the relationship between maternal attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptom levels and their children's ADHD symptom levels. The study included 90 children (M = 9.71 years, SD = 1.33) diagnosed with ADHD and their mothers. Mothers completed Adult Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder Self-Report Scale, Borderline Personality Inventory, DSM-IV Based Disruptive Behavior Disorders Rating Scale, Coping with

Mothers adopt various emotion socialization strategies and sometimes exhibit contradictory responses. Thus, it is essential to understand how mothers differentiate in their use of emotion socialization strategies, and whether a set of emotion socialization responses is associated with individual differences in emotion regulation, mental health, and parental sense of competence during toddlerhood. Therefore, we used a person-centred approach to identify mothers' emotion socialization responses and then compared mothers based on the aforementioned characteristics. The mothers (N = 680) with todd

Current theoretical models predict a negative relationship between social anxiety and performance on measures of social cognition, yet there appears to be relatively little research that directly examines this relationship and the potential interaction of sex. Two samples of undergraduates self-reporting either a high (n=27; 59% female) or low (n=29; 62% female) level of social anxiety on the abbreviated Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory completed two social cognition measures: the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (Eyes Test) and The Awareness of Social Inference Test-Parts 2 and 3). The present study examined the interpersonal lives of individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD). According to evolutionary and interpersonal theories, we construed the interpersonal world using the social rank and the affiliation psychological systems. Two studies assessed measures of social rank, affiliation, social anxiety and depression among a population of treatment-seeking individuals with SAD. In study 1, individuals with SAD without major depressive disorder (MDD; n=42) were compared to healthy controls (n=47). In study 2, individuals with SAD and MDD (n=45) were compared to indiv

Social capital is the social structure which facilitates the actions of individuals, stimulates production and allows for success. Poverty maintains basic needs unmet (food, health, autonomy) over time and unvoluntarily. Social exclusion does not allow individuals to participate in society. The following dimensions are assessed: financial poverty, social inclusion, employment, health and education. Social participation, work integration, empowerment, self-esteem, and personal achievement should be promoted. In Europe 15% of people is exposed to poverty; in Spain corresponding figures are 13.4%

Teachers and parents of a sample of 1774 students at three grade levels (4th, 6th and 8th grades) were asked to judge the social competence of the children by means of the social competence questionnaire by Buhrmester et al. (1988). These ratings were correlated with the social status of the pupils, with peer statements on aggressive behavior and victimization and with the teachers' ratings of behavior in class and towards fellow pupils. Teachers proved to be more critical than parents, crediting boys with less social competence than girls, though this difference diminished in the higher grade

OBJECTIVE: Digital social technologies, such as social media and online multiplayer video games (MVGs), have ushered in an era of peer relationships that evolve online, in addition to in person. This report reviews existing research about the dual role of social media and MVGs in shaping youth social connectedness, recognizing both their potential benefits and their associated risks on youth mental health. By providing evidence-based insights, it aims to inform strategies that optimize these technologies' advantages while safeguarding youth mental health and well-being.

Although social functioning relies on working memory, whether a social-specific mechanism exists remains unclear. This undermines the characterization of neurodegenerative conditions with both working memory and social deficits. We assessed working memory domain-specificity across behavioral, electrophysiological, and neuroimaging dimensions in 245 participants. A novel working memory task involving social and non-social stimuli with three load levels was assessed across controls and different neurodegenerative conditions with recognized impairments in: working memory and social cognition (beh

Successful social problem solving requires both an adaptive orientation toward the problem and the necessary skills to generate relevant and effective solutions. Surprisingly few studies have examined social problem solving in the context of social anxiety. We examined social problem solving in 38 participants with social anxiety disorder (SAD) in comparison to 30 healthy control (HC) participants with no history of anxiety problems. Participants rated their problem solving attitudes and abilities (i.e., problem orientation) and then generated solutions to hypothetical interpersonal problems f

Negative self-appraisal is thought to maintain social anxiety particularly when comparing oneself to others. Work on social comparison suggests that gender may moderate the effects of social comparison in social anxiety. Self-appraisals of the desirability of one's personality may be more important to women, whereas self-appraisal of signs of anxiety may be more important to men. Within each gender, those with high social anxiety are expected to report more negative self-appraisal when comparing themselves to someone else described as high achieving. This study is the first we are aware of tha

Although one may not always see it, social life often involves choices that make people act in ways that are mindful of others or not. We adopt an interdependence theoretical approach to the novel concept of social mindfulness, which we conceptualize in terms of other-regarding choices involving both skill (to see it, e.g., theory of mind, perspective taking) and will (to do it, e.g., empathic concern, prosocial orientation) to act mindfully toward another person's control over outcomes. We operationalized social mindfulness in a new social decision-making paradigm that focuses on leaving or l

INTRODUCTION: Persons with nonclinical paranoia show many of the same biases as those with clinical paranoia, suggesting that paranoia exists on a continuum. However, little is known about the various social cognitive processes found in paranoia and how these relate to social functioning and social behaviours in general. This study will examine performance on emotion perception and attributional style measures and their relationship to social functioning, social problem solving, and social skill. A key element in this study will be the incorporation of ambiguity in the perception of emotional
