Investigating socioecological obesogenic factors in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Obesity-related information in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is limited, and research findings are contradictory. Thus, this study aimed to use a nationwide non-clinical sample to examine the association of sociological factors with overweight status in children with ASD and reveal the degree of differences in the risk factors for overweight in children with and without ASD. The data for this cross-sectional study, based on the modified ecological system theory model, were obtained from the 2019 National Survey of Children's Health. The weighted logistic regressions were perform

Understanding crisis dynamics during public health emergencies: an integrated framework of social consequences, trust, and behavioral responses.

Public health emergencies are inherently social crises that disrupt institutions, livelihoods, and everyday social functioning. However, the factors that determine whether their crisis dimensions are amplified, sustained, or attenuated remain insufficiently understood from an integrated, macro-systemic perspective. This review synthesizes evidence across epidemiology, sociology, psychology, and public health to examine the interacting mechanisms that shape the social dynamics of epidemics. We develop a framework in which social consequences, trust dynamics, behavioral and psychological respons

Disordered gambling: etiology, trajectory, and clinical considerations.

Gambling-related research has advanced rapidly during the past 20 years. As a result of expanding interest in pathological gambling (PG), stakeholders (e.g., clinicians, regulators, and policy makers) have a better understanding of excessive gambling, including its etiology (e.g., neurobiological/neurogenetic, psychological, and sociological factors) and trajectory (e.g., initiation, course, and adaptation to gambling exposure). In this article, we examine these advances in PG-related research and then consider some of the clinical implications of these advances. We consider criteria changes f

An investigation of apparent mass psychogenic illness in an electronics plant.

An investigation of a case of apparent mass psychogenic illness was undertaken in a midwestern electronics assembly plant. The plant employed 500 workers, of whom 80% were female. The illness outbreak involved a total of 90 female first shift workers who reported a variety of nonspecific symptoms such as headache, dizziness, and lightheadedness in response to a strange odor in the workplace. Although environmental testing revealed some localized concentrations of a few airbone contaminants, no environmental toxins were discovered that could account for the continuing outbreaks of illness. An a

The Importance of Recognizing Social Vulnerability in Patients during Clinical Practice.

Enrolled patients at the free clinic in Dunedin, New Zealand were not just financially poor, but also vulnerable. Large social inequalities are present in the United States and New Zealand. The literature on vulnerability originates predominantly from sociology and public health. This commentary discusses the concept of vulnerability within clinical practice, and makes a case for the improved recognition of patient vulnerability. Vulnerability arises from an individual's susceptibility to harm and their exposure to risks and negative events. Biographical factors commonly regarded as social vul

Beyond Accessible Mobility: Insights into Psychosocial Inclusivity Dimensions in Personal Transport.

The importance of psychosocial aspects has been gradually recognised in the field of inclusive design. A critical review of existing literature, however, such as design, healthcare, psychology, and sociology, on psychosocial aspects of inclusivity identifies a two-fold research gap which is a limited understanding of both definition and dimensions of psychosocial inclusivity in the field of inclusive design. Such concept of psychosocial inclusivity is an inherently context-dependent and multi-faceted concept. Accordingly, a 'personal mobility' was focused on in this paper as one key context to

The ascendancy of Amblyomma americanum as a vector of pathogens affecting humans in the United States.

Until the 1990s, Amblyomma americanum was regarded primarily as a nuisance species, but a tick of minor importance as a vector of zoonotic pathogens affecting humans. With the recent discoveries of Ehrlichia chaffeensis, Ehrlichia ewingii, and "Borrelia lonestari," the public health relevance of lone star ticks is no longer in question. During the next 25 years, the number of cases of human disease caused by A. americanum-associated pathogens will probably increase. Based on current trajectories and historic precedents, the increase will be primarily driven by biological and environmental fact

Risk factors for suicidal behavior in adolescents.

Adolescent suicide is today a public health problem among the leading cause of mortality among adolescents and young adults. There seems to be many reasons for this increase (which has different trends in different populations), but associations have been found with increased substance abuse, television and video violence, socio-economic status and easy access to firearms. Gender differences have also been observed with crime, suicide and substance abuse higher among males, while eating disorder, depression and suicidal behavior more prevalent among females. This paper will review prevalence a

[Evaluation of risk factors coexistence for suicidal behavior with features of bipolarity in patients with depressive disorders].

UNLABELLED: Suicide being a deliberate act of depriving one-self of life is a complex phenomenon, which occurs as a result of the interaction between biological, genetic, psychological, sociological and environmental factors. More and more studies have provided evidence that subthreshold states of BP II (bipolar disorder type II) may increase the risk of suicidal behavior. The aim of the present study was to evaluate relationship of suicidal behavior and bipolarity features according to MDQ (Mood Disorder Questionnaire) and HCL-32 (Hypomania Check List-32) questionnaires in recurrent depressiv

Low coverage of HIV testing among adolescents and young adults in Nigeria: Implication for achieving the UNAIDS first 95.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on HIV testing among young people in Nigeria are not nationally representative. As such, recent nationally representative data, such as the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS), could help assess the current level of HIV testing among young people, a key target population for HIV prevention in the country. In this study, we examined the coverage and factors associated with HIV testing among adolescents and young adults (AYA). METHODS: We used the data for 14,312 AYA that examined recent and lifetime HIV testing from the 2017 MCIS. Our outcomes of interest were eve

Suicidality and antidepressants in the elderly.

Suicide has reached epidemic proportions in the elderly, particularly in non-Hispanic white men. Unfortunately, the risk is underappreciated in this population. Known risk correlates for suicide in this population fall into three interrelated categories. Sociologic factors include such considerations as living alone and having few social interactions. Physical health factors include having more medical comorbidity and being a current smoker. The mental health risk factors include the presence of mood and anxiety disorders with a focus on the greater severity of symptoms, especially hypersomnia
