Characterization of TMC-1 in C. elegans sodium chemotaxis and sodium conditioned aversion.

BACKGROUND: While sodium is attractive at low and aversive at high concentrations in most studied species, including Caenorhabditis elegans, the molecular mechanisms behind transduction remain poorly understood. Additionally, past studies with C. elegans provide evidence that the nematode's innate behavior can be altered by previous experiences. Here we investigated the molecular aspects of both innate and conditioned responses to salts. Transmembrane channel-like 1 (tmc-1) has been suggested to encode a sodium-sensitive channel required for sodium chemosensation in C. elegans, but its specifi

Sodium gradient: a tool to individualize dialysate sodium prescription in chronic hemodialysis patients?

Low dialysate sodium concentrations have been associated with intradialytic symptoms such as muscle cramps and hypotensive episodes. High dialysate sodium concentrations lead to sodium loading, thirst and subsequent increase in interdialytic weight gain and hypertension. The optimal dialysate sodium concentration for an individual depends on the serum sodium concentration. The difference between the dialysate sodium concentration and the predialysis serum sodium concentration has been defined as the sodium gradient. In this article, the role of the sodium gradient in fluid overload, hypertensi

Antiarrhythmic effect of hypertonic sodium bicarbonate and sodium chloride in ouabain-induced arrhythmias.

Ouabain-induced tachyarrhythmias in cats can be abolished by bolus injection of NaHCO3 solution. This effect is consistent, rapid and of short duration. The antiarrhythmic effect appears to be due to high sodium concentration of this solution, as hypertonic NaCl solution with equal concentration of sodium exerts the same effect. Alkalinity and hyper-osmolality cannot account for the antiarrhythmic effect of NaHCO3 as respiratory alkalosis and mannitol solution with equal osmolality did not relieve the arrhythmias. Overdrive suppression is not responsible for this effect as the heart rate slows

Designing sustained-release sodium carriers: Oil-modified starch gels enhance the texture and delay sodium release in low-sodium shrimp protein gels.

This study developed an oil-modified starch gel (OMSGs) as delivery system to modulate texture and control sodium release in low-sodium shrimp myofibrillar protein (SMP) gels. OMSGs prepared with 1% oil and 100 mg/mL starch formed a dense network with high water-holding capacity and gel strength. OMSGs containing varying NaCl (5-20%), denoted OMSGs-Na, were blended with SMP at a 10:1 ratio to obtain OMSGs-Na-SMP composites. Among these, the OMSGs-Na (15%, equivalent to 1.19% NaCl in SMP) exhibited uniform and dense microstructure, effectively delaying sodium ion release during simulated oral d

Randomized Crossover Trial of Low Sodium Dialysate on Tissue Sodium Accumulation in Hemodialysis.

INTRODUCTION: Patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) have higher tissue sodium accumulation in skin and muscle. In this randomized, crossover clinical trial, we assessed the safety and efficacy of low sodium dialysate on skin and muscle sodium accumulation, and systemic markers of inflammation. METHODS: Patients on MHD were assigned to initial treatment with either 4-weeks of low sodium dialysate (132 mEq/l) or high sodium dialysate (138 mEq/l). Tissue sodium was assessed with 23Na magnetic resonance imaging at the end of each treatment. RESULTS: Of 28 randomized participants, 23 complet

Preparation of Decellularized Human Peripheral Nerve Grafts Using Sodium Hydroxide and Sodium Deoxycholate.

Peripheral nerve injuries often require graft materials that provide structural guidance for axonal regeneration. Although autologous nerve grafting remains the clinical gold standard, its use is limited by donor-site morbidity and restricted tissue availability. These limitations have driven increasing interest in decellularized human peripheral nerve grafts as an alternative biomaterial for nerve regeneration. However, commonly used detergent-based decellularization protocols may disrupt extracellular matrix (ECM) architecture and leave cytotoxic residues that can compromise graft quality. I

Pharmacologic inhibition of intestinal sodium uptake: a gut centric approach to sodium management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Impaired sodium excretion in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) can drive fluid overload and hypertension and accelerate CKD progression. Diuretics reduce fluid overload but require residual kidney function to work. Adherence to dietary sodium restriction is generally poor. Here, we review an alternative pharmacologic strategy aimed at reducing sodium absorption from the gut. RECENT FINDINGS: Genetic studies implicate the sodium/hydrogen exchanger isoform 3 (NHE3) as the major absorptive sodium transporter. Pharmacologic inhibition of apically expressed gut NHE3 off

Different peripheral vasodilator effects of isradipine in sodium-loaded and sodium-depleted rabbits.

1. The influence of acute changes in salt balance on the cardiovascular effects of the calcium antagonist isradipine were investigated in two groups of 6 rabbits pretreated 24 hr before an acute experiment, one by substituting 0.45% NaCl for drinking water, the other one with a subcutaneous injection of 20 mg kg-1 furosemide. 2. On the next day the animals were anaesthetized with barbiturates and 10 ml kg-1 0.9% NaCl or 5% glucose were infused into the salt loaded and salt depleted animals respectively. 3. Regional blood flows were then measured with microspheres before and after i.v. administ

Comparison of sodium zirconium cyclosilicate and sodium polystyrene sulfonate in the treatment of acute hyperkalaemia.

OBJECTIVE: Sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS) and sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (SZC) have been used for treating acute hyperkalaemia. The pharmacodynamic properties of SZC suggest greater theoretical utility in the acute setting than SPS, but there is no clear guidance on an optimal potassium binder. This study evaluated the efficacy of SZC and SPS in the treatment of acute hyperkalaemia. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included adult hospitalised patients who had acute hyperkalaemia (serum potassium level ≥5.5 mmol/L) and were treated with either SZC or SPS from April 2021 to Augu

Effects of sodium copper- and sodium iron-chlorophyllin primers on resin bonding to dentin.

This study evaluated the effects of two chlorophyll derivatives, sodium copper chlorophyllin (Cu-Chl) and sodium iron chlorophyllin (Fe-Chl), on the bond strength between a self-curing luting agent (4-META/MMA-TBB resin) and dentin. Five aqueous primers containing 35% 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate with 0.007% Cu-Chl, 0.07% Cu-Chl, 0.007% Fe-Chl, 0.07% Fe-Chl, or neither Cu-Chl nor Fe-Chl (no-Chl) were prepared. The extracted human dentin surfaces were etched with 10% phosphoric acid (10PA), primed, and bonded to a resin block using the 4-META/MMA-TBB resin. A conventional etching agent (10-3) and

Is the sodium in sodium oxybate a risk for heart health? A plain language summary of publication.

WHAT IS THIS SUMMARY ABOUT?: Sodium oxybate is a medicine for narcolepsy symptoms. It contains a high level of sodium. Should people taking sodium oxybate and their doctors worry about the sodium increasing their risk of heart or cardiovascular problems? This is a summary of an article that reviewed 20 years of published data to answer that question. WHAT WERE THE RESULTS?: We found that sodium oxybate was not linked to cardiovascular risks, such as heart attacks or strokes. WHAT DO THE RESULTS MEAN?: This suggests that the sodium in sodium oxybate may not add cardiovascular risk for people
